Agree with trishaboo, Make it easy on yourself was a favourite but I also loved Baby can I hold you - his version. If he did some covers would love to hear these again. In view of the fact that the latest x factor candidates have done albums of virtually all covers, should he do some covers for an album. At the time of pop idol and after it was thought that one should be creative and write ones own as he did but suddenly its fine for the latest candidates to do all covers and fans think that fine so why not D. I know thats being controversial but did love the above two covers I have mentioned.

I don't think it's seems fine at all - it might be with the 'fans' of the particular artists concerned - as mostly they would back whoever/whatever they did I think, but I think 'mainly' covers artists still get a tough time with the critics and radio - and rightly so really in my opinion. I'd hate for Darius to bring out an album of mostly covers :( - because that just doesn't/hasn't ever felt like what Darius is about to me - he's always been about creativity in my eyes, I want to hear whatever inspires him to write songs/music - what is genuinely him creatively, not covers of other peoples' inspirations. I'd sooner wait however long it takes for Darius's own work, than have a covers album from him any day. I'm not totally against covers per say, but for me, they have to either reinvent the original and bring something completely new to it, or to be a vehicle to express something the artist really feels and wishes to communicate at the time - like when Darius sang Faith, Time of my Life, Father & Son, More Than Words etc... all sang with 'personal' meaning/feeling - I wouldn't mind the occasional one on an album or b-side if there was a genuine purpose for doing it - but not a general 'covers' album though.

I agree, we all know he can sing covers brilliantly, he has performed so many over the years at various gigs and i adore to hear them sang by Darius. I always think its the lazy option, flagging career, lack of origanal song ideas, or cheap skate money grabbing labels(using royalty free songs etc) aimed at a sterile, lounge market of supermarket buyers. Having said that, I would buy a covers album were it Darius singing. that would be a FIRST in my life. as it is I can listen to a lot of the performances of covers he has done if I wish as I have them on CD.(the kind that doesnt line the record labels pockets ;) .)

I though BCIHY was better than Ronans version, and I liked his too.

Darius said the best version of BCIHY was by Tracy Chapman. Has anyone heard hers? I prefer D's to Ronan's.
nope, I have a faint recollection of her voice though, and so probably wouldnt like it, to me it is a mans song, call me prejudice,

SM had them all on .org but she's updated the site a few times since so they might not be there any more. I'll have a look and get back to you.

Here you go. I think you need realplayer to hear them.

I've checked a few and they do seem to be still working

If you're listening to these clips, do it via the right-click save target as method, because if you just click and listen it can cause bandwidth problems for her ;)

From the first moment you saw Darius in PopIdol he looked wary and withdrawn.

Not the bright lively personality he was on PopStars.

I just wanted to hug him.

He knew what could happen once it was screened on TV and I don't think he relaxed until he was in the top 10, even then he seemed cautious.

Thank goodness it's behind him.

I love his songs and talking about covers...for him to do covers on a CD would be to go back on everything he has said.

Yes do then in a place like Maidstone, or perhaps a 'b' side but not an album.

I would be very disappointed in him if he did do an album of covers now.

Can you attach the list of PI covers to the top of each page of this discussion topic, please?

I can remember some of them. I'll have to listen to the others first.

I love Tracy Chapman's voice. 2 or 3 of hers are among my all time favorites. I think she's brilliant, but I don't like a lot of her stuff, the ones I do, I really like.

:o

Firstly, thanks so much Baytree for the link, it was fabulous to hear them all again

Next, I am amazed you have never heard Tracy Chapman's version of that song :o She has a very deep(for a lady) beautiful voice. I like quite a few of her songs, but absolutely love this one. Ronan's version was good, Darius' was better, but in my honest opinion as a true Darius fan, Tracy Chapmans original is the best of the lot :) She has a rare tonality to her voice which distinguishes her from every other artist. If you get the chance to hear the original single version, you should listen to it. I have an album of her greatest hits, and on it she performs BCIHY, but it is not as good as the original recording of it.

I don't want to upset anyone by posting my views, so please don't anyone take any offence from what I am about to say about some songs which obviously mean a lot to individuals. I really didn't like Make It Easy On Yourself, although D did sing it ok, same with Dancing In The Moonlight :( Just not the right song at all in my opinion, not popular enough with the GBP to give him a chance of making the final. We all know the story of You've Lost That Loving Feeling

A number of his performances were ok, but not fantastic. The ones that got to me emotionally(and have again this afternoon) were BCIHY and especially Whole Again  Absolutely loved it :)

Judges' choice - enough said, especially the way that they've gone on, in PI2 and X Factor, about how important it song choice is.

Personal choice made through free will Paul ... thats what makes the world go round and, by coincidence makes for interesting threads!! I personally cannot stand "I would die for you" ... another story and I digress.

By getting to the semi final Darius had reached his "seeding" to use tennis parlance. He was consistently coming in behind WY and GG who were the darlings. By this point he had made his point that he could sing extraordinarly well and be controversial with it too. Will answered back to Slimy. So did Darius. Will had his "genre" of soul (which he appears to have forsaken - but then I no longer listen to him so he may have done something of this style for all I know .. or for all I care) Darius had the big ballad genre. Will was just a bit twee with his poppy disco action... Darius gave us the full on hipswaying sex moves with Its not Unusual ... which made the GBP sit up and take notice - I certainly did!

Yes, we do know the story behind MIEOY and Dancing in the Moonlight. DITM was a likeable song and its D's version that sticks in my head even though Ive played the original at doos where its always gone well and as a request on our Community Radio Station. However, Mr Slimy wanted nothing to stand in the way of progress of his favourite new cash cow and if Darius had wiped the floor with Gareth who sang well but to my mind with nothing extra than he had already given , Slimy knew he could be overtaken if the WY lot stood their ground. So who got sacrificed on the Altar of Cowell .... the Bearsden Boy. Darius has always said that he admires SC for his business sense. You have to. If Sir Alan Sugar hadn't taken on the job of Master in "The Apprentice" Simon Cowell would have been perfect. "That was appalling You're fired"

However, I digress again ... covers .. ahem ... I sincerely believe that if there were to be just one cover for Darius ever to do, ever again, wouldnt it be poetic justice for him to do You've lost that lovin' feeling. I for one have a place in my head and heart that often wonders - What if ... What if?

But then, Ive also often wondered, whatever happened to Darius' versions of Evergreen and Anything is Possible?

I don't think even Darius knows the answer to that question.

The only ones that were supposed to be kept were Will's but only a few months later Gareth's appeared as b-sides.

I bet Darius's would have turned up shortly after that in some form or another if he hadn't given Cowell and Waterman a side-swerve and gone with Steve Lillywhite instead.

Knowing Cowell, fans would have had to pay a subscription to an exclusive websiteto hear them.

Giving Cowell and Waterman the bum's rush was the best thing he ever did

Apart from kissing my tears away at Hammersmith ...

100% agree Boo, I would love to hear all three of those :) Anyone got any ideas, particularly about the latter two, as they must be held somewhere??????

I think none of them were performed in Darius's natural style. Just think of one month before he did PI ( Mocking Bird at Live and Loud) and barely a couple of weeks' after the show when he sang Time of Your Life - what a contrast ! This was Darius reacting to his live audiences and entertaining them with a capital E.

The PI songs always seemed a bit stilted as if he was holding himself in check - the influence of the Grants? or just a wariness about what can be done editing-wise on any show?

I don't think Darius tried to "perform" any song until Big Band week. Before that, I seem to only remember a succession of stools a la mode de Westlife. His choice? or directions from above because he was so tall? Who knows? He's never gone into any details.

As we know, he never stays still on the stage. How many blurred pictures or pictures without Darius have I got - loads! Maybe full on Darius was too much for camera angles etc. He probably wouldn't have been able to do the same actions in exactly the same sequence.
