Posted February 20, 200718 yr FESTIVAL PLANS AN EXTRA DAY AS STARS SIGN Exclusive by Charles Lavery And Billy Sloan THE 14th T in the Park - Scotland's top music festival - is set to become a three day extravaganza. Bosses want to make the weekend festival even bigger and better by adding a Friday line-up to the traditional Saturday and Sunday. The draft blueprints would mean an expanded festival kicking off on Friday, July 6. Insiders last night confirmed that the plans for a three-day festival are being scrutinised. They say festival organisers DF Concerts have signed up so many top bands that an extra day of top-class music could be a real possibility. The promoters are staging a big press conference on Thursday to begin revealing details of the T in the Park bill. But we can reveal today Brit award-winners The Killers, fronted by Brandon Flowers, are set to be joined in a star-packed line-up by Scots solo star Paolo Nutini and Dundee chart-toppers The View. Yesterday, a DF spokeswoman declined to comment in detail on the Friday plans but said one-day tickets for Friday would not be going on sale. She said entertainment would be laid on for fans arriving on Friday but refused to say if that would include top bands or comment on plans for a full three-day T. She added: "For the campers, T in the Park has always been a three-day event and the campers make up the majority of the people attending." Local shopkeepers and politicians around the site in Balado, near Kinross, welcome the prospect of another day. Last year, the festival pulled in 150,000 people and generated around £15million during the weekend. Perth &Kinross council leader Jimmy Doig said: "An extra day would be marvellous and very easy to organise. "We carry out safety and amenities inspections anyway so we would simply have to bring those forward to take the first day into account. "It's such a wonderful event for our area and for Scotland - I know an extra day will be welcomed." Bosses have been studying ways of expanding the festival that sells out as soon as tickets go on sale to the public. Sources suggest that a gradual expansion of a Friday line-up this year may be followed by a full threeday bill next year. Last year, all 150,000 tickets - priced at £97.50 for the weekend or £115 including camping - were snapped up in less than an hour. Last year, fans watched rock supergroups TheWho and The Red Hot Chili Peppers plus top acts such as Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs, The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys and Paul Weller. A festival insider said: "T in the Park is one of the biggest dates in the rock calendar. "Fans travel from all over the world to attend what has now become a real global event. "In recent years, the number of stages and size of the audience have increased. "But extending the festival over three days - in its 14th year - is a bold and necessary move." Organisers book into the Green Hotel in Kinross every year and a spokesman for the hotel said this year they were fully booked on Friday, July 6. He added that the T in the Park team had also booked the hotel for the Thursday night. A spokesman for Tayside Police said they had received no notification from organisers about the extra day but said there was still time to put arrangements in place. Staff at the hotel nearest the actual Balado site, the Travelodge, said they were booked up for the event five years in advance. This year, just a handful of rooms remain available for the Thursday night before the big weekend.
