THE estranged hubby of out-of-control superstar Britney Spears has done an astonishing U-turn to tell her: I still love you.

 

Wannabe hip hop star Kevin Federline visited her in rehab after having second thoughts about divorce.

 

In a 60-minute heart-to-heart the warring couple wept and hugged as he promised: "I'll stand by you if you clean up your act. I just want you to get well."

 

Meanwhile the News of the World can reveal the full, harrowing, untold story of Britney's week of meltdown since she shaved her head.

 

The wild-eyed, bald pop star, 25:

 

-THREATENED to commit suicide by gulping down TWO family-size bottles of painkillers.

-WAS STRIPPED and searched after medics feared she'd smuggled a stash of cocaine into the rehab clinic.

-CONCEALED a "Death List" of people she wishes would die— including her husband.

-OFFERED Kevin £100,000 to drop a custody hearing over their two sons.

-BELIEVES she is being bugged as she sleeps and checks every morning for listening devices.

 

An insider revealed womanising Kevin's amazing change of heart after he visited her at the Promises Clinic in Malibu, California, where she checked in for the third time in a week on Thursday.

 

The increasingly paranoid star was pictured shuffling around the grounds there, haggard and lost, wearing a scruffy blue hoodie and sucking on cigarettes.

 

 

 

The pal said: "Just a few days ago there was no love lost between the two of them, but it's taken Britney's breakdown to make Kevin realise that he still loves her. He's finally treating her with a bit of care for once. He told her he'll stand by her while she's recovering — but he doesn't want to put her under any pressure until she's got her life back together.

 

"And he admitted he's been having second thoughts about the split and thinks there may be hope of a reunion after she gets better.

 

 

 

"Britney told him that she just wants to take things one day at a time at the moment, but she was deeply comforted by his words."

 

The former pop princess wed Federline in September 2004 and filed for divorce last November after reports he was gambling away her fortune and cavorting with hookers in Las Vegas.

 

They are locked in a bitter custody battle over their two children—Sean Preston, one, and Jayden James, five months.

 

Her secret pills SUICIDE threat came last Sunday, shortly after she was snatched to safety while wandering in and out of traffic near her Malibu beachfront home.

 

A friend told the News of the World: "Britney was crying and said she would kill herself if she lost the boys. She had two bottles of Tylenol in front of her and just wanted the madness to end.

 

"She held up the painkillers and shouted, ‘I'm gonna do this, this is it! I'm through with the whole f***ing circus.' Luckily a female friend was with her and managed to talk her out of it."

 

Now she is on suicide watch in rehab and anxious aides have reserved a bed in a psychiatric ward at a top medical centre in case she decides to walk out of the clinic again.

 

The pal revealed: "This is rock bottom—this is as low as Britney can go. We're just terrified of what might happen next."

 

When Britney checked into rehab for the second time on Tuesday, staff at the clinic suspected her of concealing a small stash of COCAINE in her suitcase.

 

What they did discover was a hand-written list detailing people Britney would like to see DEAD. They included Federline and a selection of American paparazzi.

 

The pal added: "When the staff confronted her she just burst into tears. She was crying uncontrollably — she's now such a broken woman.

 

"They had to strip search her afterwards to make sure she didn't have drugs on her body. Then the list was quietly disposed of.

 

"Britney just turns this stuff over and over in her mind.

 

"She has dark fantasies about terrible things happening to her enemies."

 

The following day she made the amazing CASH OFFER to Federline, 28, to call off a court hearing over the cusody of their children.

 

The kids have been living with him since she first checked into the clinic last weekend.

 

She turned up at his home in Sherman Oaks and was pictured crazily attacking a car with an umbrella when he refused to open the door and let her into the house. The pal revealed: "She really kicked off at Kevin, shouting and screaming everything under the sun.

 

"She was saying, ‘Let me in—I want to see the kids. Let me have my children back.'

 

"Kevin came out and told her to go away and calm down because she was scaring the kids.

 

"She went. But minutes later she rang Kevin from the car and spoke to him for two hours, sobbing and begging him to give her a chance to get her head together.

 

"Britney pleaded and pleaded with him. She said she would get him £100,000 in cash if only he would postpone the court hearing.

 

"She was terrified he'd gain full custody of Sean and Jayden if the court found out about the incident with the painkillers.

 

"Kevin refused the money but said he would postpone the court appearance to give her a chance to get herself sorted out.

 

"The last thing he wants to happen is for Britney to kill herself." She calmed down and checked back into rehab, where she has remained ever since. But his lawyers are likely to demanded a psychiatric report on her which they will use when the legal battle over the couple's kids eventually takes place.

 

Britney's pal also revealed the grim details of the star's tortured life: "She spends every night in floods of tears," said the friend.

 

"She lies there, sobbing her heart out to the blackness.

 

"You can hear her crying and crying with these deep sobs that echo around the house.

 

"Her security guards have to listen to it because she's got them sleeping outside her room—she's that fearful for her own safety. Then in the morning she gets up and goes through her room and all her belongings to search for bugs.

 

"She's convinced that everyone is out to get her and that her thoughts are being recorded. And the smallest thing can set off a fully-blown panic attack. She gets this fearful look in her eyes and starts trembling all over, dripping with sweat and gasping for breath and she looks like she's going to faint at any time.

 

"It's absolutely terrifying to see. It is the behaviour of someone who has completely lost their mind."

 

The friend also told how Britney's team were now desperate to get her checked into the University of California Hospital's psychiatric facility.

 

The pal said: "Her staff want her to receive proper medical treatment from people who have looked after her before.

 

"They don't trust her to last the distance in her latest spell in rehab. They are worried that she sees it as a soft option.

 

"She'll get much more robust help at UCLA, so that's why they've asked if she can stay there for a while.

 

"The staff are ready for her arrival and have even allocated her a specific bed. They've said it's ready for Britney whenever she wants to turn up. Now all her team have got to do is convince her it's in her best interests to go there. But in her current state of mind, that's going to take some doing."

 

Britney has also tried to stem her sorrow with wild shopping sprees and is rapidly draining her £65million fortune—spending three times her £166,000 monthly income.

 

"She even applied for more credit on her cards, but the banks blocked it," the friend revealed.

 

Britney went off the rails after ditching Federline by text message last year.

 

She was fed up with him spending time gambling and drinking with hookers both while she was pregnant and after the birth of their second son.

 

She has repeatedly been pictured out partying wild-eyed in various states of undress with no underwear.

 

But the fallen clean-cut star — famous for the No1 Hit Me Baby One More Time — sparked worldwide concern last weekend when she shaved her head at a hair salon in Tarzana, California.
