Chartifacts

(thanks to Gavin Ryan)

Hinder are for fifth week the No.1 single-holder on the Australian Charts with their track "Lips of an Angel". The track also picks up a Platinum Certification in this country for sales over 70,000 units. They also take their album to the top of the charts, but more on that later.

Debuting at No.2 is "The Sweet Escape", the eighth Top 40 solo single for Gwen Stefani (this includes her appearance with Pharrell in 2005), and it gives her a sixth Top 10 single and a fourth Top 2 hit. She has previously been up this end of the chart with "What You Waiting for" (No.1, Nov 2004), "Rich Girl" (No.2, Feb 2005) and "Hollaback Girl" (No.1, May 2005). Her two other Top 10 singles were "Cool" (No.10, Sept 2005) and the first single off her second album "The Sweet Escape" (No.12 this week), "Wind it Up" (No.5, Jan 2007) which is still charting at No.24 this week.

The other Top 10 debut comes in at No.6, "I Wanna Love You" by Akon. It features guest vocalist Snoop Dogg, and was a recent No.1 in the US. Akon is actually featured on 3 singles within the Top 11 this week. He is the guest vocalist on Gwen Stefani's new track at No.2, "The Sweet Escape", and he falls out of the Top 10 with his former No.2 single "Smack That". I did a bit of research and found that the last time that an artist appeared on three tracks at the same time was back in October 2003 when Sean Paul was on three singles within the Top 20. He had his own track "Like Glue" peaking at No.20, plus he was guest vocalist on tracks by Blu Cantrell and Beyonce.

32 year-old Scottish lass KT Tunstall (short for Katie) see's her January 2006 No.39 single re-enter the charts at No.15 this week. The track is currently the theme to the TV Series "Ugly Betty" which debuted on TV last Sunday, and it is also getting a boost as being the opening music from the recently released DVD of "The Devil Wears Prada".

They have had the No.1 single in the country for the past four weeks, and now on their fifth week at the top of the singles chart, Hinder's album "Extreme Behavior" not only achieves Gold Sales Status, but goes to the top of the Albums Chart. In doing so, Hinder becomes the 101st act to hold both the top of the Australian Singles and Albums Charts. The last act to do this was Damien Leith back in December 2006.

A few facts for Hinder's achievement to the No.1 position. They are the 258th Group to reach No.1, the 194th American Performed Album, and are the 114th American Performers to hit the top of our album charts. They are also the 52nd American Group to hit the top, and it's the first time that the words 'Extreme" or 'Behavior' have been at the No.1 spot. "Extreme Behavior" is now the 543rd No.1 album in Australia.

The Grammy winning's keep coming for two acts this week. Justin Timberlake's next single comes out in a few weeks, and is getting maximum airplay around the country. That teamed with his multiple Grammy winnings has pushed his "FutureSex/LoveSound" album back into the Top 5 at No.5, the first time since 2-Oct-2006 (21 weeks ago). Also the Dixie Chicks' album "Taking the Long Way" jumps from 26 to 13 this week, and the Grammy Award Winning single "Not Ready to Make Nice" is the highest climbing single on the singles chart this week (35 to 27).

With Westlife and John Mayer currently doing shows around the country, it's only natural that their albums climb this week. Westlife's "The Love Album" goes from 36 to 26, and John Mayer's "Continuum" re-enters the Top 50 at No.32.

This is a list of the No.1 albums in Australia for the past 42 years.

Nice to see Westlife's Album to climb, i hope it will climb a bit more. Hope they will do a show with delta
just 70,000 units for a platinum single!!! And it has taken 5 weeks to get that far which means about 14,000 each week it has been in the chart. How much did this weeks UK number 1 sell?

You should remember that the population of the UK is about 3 times the population of Australia. So, let's say 14k is what a single

sells usually to get no 1 in Australia, in the UK it should sell about 42k in order to match the Aussie sales (and nowadays that

is very good sales for a UK no 1 single).
