This issue we popped to Los Angeles to talk rap with the UK’s biggest selling solo singer, Mr Robert Williams. Alright Robbie. We hear you’re a big fan of hip hop? Oh yes, have been for years. I was always really into Souls of Mischief, De La, Pharcyde, Special Ed – do you remember him? Ludacris is good – he’s f*cking great. Do you know whose album is f*cking ace? Sway’s. I really loved it. And do you know, I was so disappointed cos f*ck what you think of me, but just as a human being to another human being, I sent him an email going ‘I really f*cking love this mate, it’s dead funny, dead clever, it’s really on it.’ And then he slagged me off. Personally, I find it very difficult to hate someone that says something nice about me. Maybe it was taken out of context... (sings) ’Little Derek’s doing ok, kay....’ Jay-Z is f*cking amazing. I never got into Nas as much, I don’t know why. I know he’s an amazing lyricist but I just never liked him as much. Maybe it was the beats. And you rap on your new album, Lovebox, right? Well this is the thing; I absolutely, positively know that I’m not a rapper. I’m not. I’d love to be, but I’m me, I come from Take That! That aside, I can’t flow like they flow. I don’t know if you listened to The ‘80s and the The‘90s off the album, but I believe everyone is saying ‘Robbie can’t rap.’ Yeah, I can’t, but I’m not rapping. For me, it’s about having more bars in a song and therefore more words, more pictures painted. Mike Skinner’s not a rapper. Why do you use the words bumba claart and rass claart on the album? Cos they’re really expressive and they’re funny. Bumba claart is sanitary towel. Not sure what rass claart is but they just sound nice coming off the tongue. And it’s funny, me saying it. Would you like to work with, say, Jay-Z or Timbaland? Well I tried to get in contact with Timbaland, but there was no joy back from anybody. I’m judging from the outside, but I wouldn’t like all the stuff that comes with it. I’ve seen the entourages and heard various nightmare stories, so I think if I was going to do anything I’ll keep it UK. Like who? Have you heard of Suicide Sports Club? They’re English rappers. I really like the Mitchell Brother’s Routine Check so I really want to work with them. So if I work with anyone, I think they’ll be English people. Do you know who I really like? I’ve been watching him on YouTube; Stig Of The Dump. I really like him, he’s f*cking brilliant. I’d like to work with him. (Ed: A few days after our interview, Robbie emails us asking for Stig’s number and calls him that night!). I think Jay-Z is f*cking amazing, but it’s been done. Snoop Dogg is the don when it comes to that pop/ rap stuff, he’d be great. But I’d be scared! I think me and 50 Cent might do something. You and Fiddy? Don’t lie! Yeah, he called. Well, his people called! He’s someone I wouldn’t mind doing something with actually, thinking about it. He’s a bit like Tyson; softly spoken but could f*ck you up! And I want friends like that. He’s like a teddybear... with a gat! I can’t imagine what we’ll do though. Like a true hip hop head, you’ve got lots of tattoos. What’s that ‘1023’ one? 10 is ‘J’ in the alphabet and 23 is ‘W’, and that stands for Johnny Wilkes; me best mate. Have you got plans to get more? Not at the moment. I will do. As I get older, they get more painful. You’ve got an amazing house. Is money and success everything? Well, my opinion is only my opinion and who’d believe me, either which way? I’m blessed to know that it hasn’t bought me happiness. I’ve had to look elsewhere for that happiness and I’ve got it, but it’s a difficult one to talk about. I’ve been thinking a lot about when I did the record signing for the contract. It was in the paper that it was £80 million this and £80 million that. I’d just got off the plane and I found myself in my manager’s office and I was feeling a bit disorientated. All the press were gathered there to do the signing of the contract and I remember thinking, ‘F*cking hell, it’s like the lottery’ or something. I remember saying ‘I’m rich beyond my wildest dreams.’ Well, I was being ironic, but people aren’t in my head and don’t know where I’m coming from. It was an absolutely stupid thing to say out loud. I should have kept it in my head. But I’ve been rich for years...I’ve been rich beyond my wildest dreams since I was 17. I didn’t even know £500,000 existed. I’ve been thinking about that the last couple of days. It’s the most embarrassing thing I’ve ever done. Is fame and fortune all you imagined? I couldn’t have imagined all this. I knew something was going to happen, but then a lot of people do. A lot of people are 100% sure that they’re going to end up here, doing what I’m doing, I was 100% sure. But millions of people don’t. Having achieved so much, what’s left? Professionally and personally? Nothing. It’s all personal stuff now. Everything I needed to achieve, I achieved a long time ago. There’s not one country I want to break, an audience I want to play or a film I want to be in. What do you want people to know about Robbie Williams? Nothing really. Nah, nothing. I like hip hop, football and writing songs. New single She’s Madonna is out March 5. MySpace.com/robbiewilliamsofficial
