I dont think they are allowed are they? It would be a bit of a joke if every country put their biggest act in, I mean youd have the likes of Robbie, U2, Madonna and so on. I think the idea is to have more unknown acts, well that is how it seems anyway. It would be amazing if we did have all the established acts though :D

Not at all. Alot of countries send the big guns in. Greece, Sweden, and alot of the former Yugoslav states put in their biggest acts (part of the reason they get votes from neighbours - they're well known in surrounding countries). In fact, Anna Vissi (Greece) and Carola (Sweden) last year are superstars in their respective countries.

The UK doesn't really take Eurovision that seriously, and it's regarded as a bit of a joke amongst the music industry (with good reason I suppose), so big artists are very unwilling to participate. Robbie's ego might be a little dented if he doesn't win, as he would clearly be the most well-known. But yes they would by all means be allowed! The BBC did try and get many big names this year, but failed!

Many credible artists for respective countries enter also to get known around Europe. Helena Paparizou has had limited success here in the UK for example after winning for Greece in 2005, and Lordi have had excellent success in the UK after their victory last year.

Well I wouldn't go right to excellent success :P

Not on the charts, but I know LOADS of people who've been to see them on tour. :funky:

A performance which was sandwiched between the wackiest performance of the night (We Are The Winners) and the host nation and pre-contest favourite (Anna Vissi) which was followed by Lordi. Daz and his schoolgirls were COMPLETELY forgotten about in the final shake-up. Ireland did quite well last year! Very basic performance, great performer in Brian Kennedy, automatically into the final this year.

And Bosnia-Herzegovina were around there too. :(

I'm sure we'll get the Scissor Sisters to do it at some point, hopefully that'll secure us this decade's quota of wins top ten positions ^_^

And before any pedants jump in, yes I DO know of Jessica Garlick, but this decade it seems that was just an anomaly :(

In the early days of the ESC the UK used to choose a popular artist to represent the country first, and then get that person to sing all the "Songs for Europe" from which the UK's entry was chosen.

The benefit of doing it that way IMHO was that the song was judged as it would be by the Europeans who did not have any loyalty to the personality and a professional of that standard could really interpret and perform every song. Also,on the night of the contest they were not riven with nerves like our recent reps often seem to be, but instead moved up a gear.

Ireland not only chose a popular guy but kept on using him - I think Johnny Logan won for them a couple of times at least.

Nah, not them, Morrissey, Jarvis Cocker, Neil Hannon, Alison Goldfrapp, etc..... Daz Sampson was totally abysmal... Vanilla Ice singing a watered-down version of Coolio's "Gangsta Paradise" with a bunch of Britney/Japanese Hentai-Girl wannabes... Truly fukkin' awful.... This was supposed to represent BRITISH music...???? I just dunno how we pick em to be honest... Lordi were an established Metal band with at least two albums under their belts before Eurovision came knocking, they're a pretty big deal in Finland.. Nightwish also tried out for Eurovision five or so years back, and I reckon we all know who they are... Just who the fukk was Daz bloody Sampson....??? Or indeed, the weedy bloke with the stubble who represented us a few years back....? And what the hell have either of them done since...? Bugger all as far as I can see... Lordi did a sold-out UK tour last year.... Call them a 'joke' if you like, at least they and Nightwish are selling records to someone, considerable amounts in both cases I might add....

Why would anyone want to go in Eurovision?

We will lose everytime, regardless of the song

We will lose everytime, regardless of the song

I dont think that's true, because Britain has won it in the past... Well, admittedly we needed a Canadian to get it for us last time....

I honestly believe that if we picked the right person with the right song, ie a well-established act who has a career and something to back them up (and not some amateur-hour piece of sh!t who fluffs the lyrics and sings flat... Hello Jemini...), and can actually write their own songs as well, then the UK would do well...
