JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE was barred from visiting ex-girlfriend Britney Spears in rehab - by her mum.

The troubled singer's first serious boyfriend was devastated to learn of her drink, cocaine and ecstasy addictions, as revealed in last week's Sunday Mirror.

So he called her mum Lynne offering to visit Britney, 25, recovering from a breakdown at the Promises Clinic in Malibu, California.

But Lynne told him it would cause her daughter too much distress.

A relative said: "Justin and Brit knew each other as kids and were first loves. Justin was distressed to learn about the state Britney was in. Lynne was touched by his gesture but begged him not to go.

"He asked Lynne to pass on his best wishes and promised to hook up with her at a later date."

Lynne told Justin that Britney has been suffering from terrifying nightmares based on lyrics from her songs and "dark, twisted versions of her pop videos".

She said her daughter is being tormented by the phrase "My loneliness is killing me" from her No1 song Hit Me Baby One More Time and Toxic - with the line "I'm slipping under, and the taste of your poison paradise, I'm addicted to you". Raised a Baptist in Kentwood, Louisiana, Britney turned to the Kaballah sect as a star but has returned to God as part of a 12-step programme, the relative revealed. "She has found comfort in her old Christian beliefs - and has been praying a lot."
