I was at school and remember us talking about it in maths class. Such a pointless waste of life shook us then and is still clear in my mind today.
It was quite stupid really, forgetting to close the bow doors is the nautical equivalent of forgetting to take your shoes off before you have a bath
When I was in the army we used to travel by ferry a lot from Zeebrugge, it was common practice to leave the bow doors open until they cleared the port and were out to sea, I saw it happen many times, it took a disaster to stop it.
the late 80's seemed to be littered with 'disasters'... bradford footy stadium burning down, zeebrugge, hillsborough footy squash, the marchioness sinking, kegworth - airplane on the m1, im sure ive missed some!
