I've just heard leaked tracks of NIN's upcoming new album "Year Zero" on You Tube... This is gonna be an ASTOUNDING, truly 'Alternative' album to say the fukkin' least on the evidence that I've heard... Everything on "With Teeth" is just so fukkin' WEAK, lame-o and just plain c**p in comparison to the sort of menacing, malignant-sounding cuts that are on show here... This is REAL Industrial/Alternative (and considering that Trent produces all his own albums, has his own record label and is very conscious about how to market his music, I would say that marks him out as one of the most truly 'independent' artists out there...) music, and on this evidence we may just be about to have not only the best NIN album since the glory days of "Pretty Hate Machine" and "Downward Spiral", but even a contender for Album of 2007, if not the decade.... Such an appropriate title as well, Trent Reznor stripping away all the crud, all the baggage that surrounds NIN and going back-to-basics, back to his Industrial Hardcore roots.... The Viral Marketing campaign for this album has been highly controversial and pretty disturbing, but obviously Trent is dealing with some pretty weighty themes on "Year Zero"... These are not videos as such, it's just the music and a still image...

In This Twilight

Survivalism

My Violent Heart

Me, I'm Not

And before any of you start whining on about this thread, without the likes of Trent Reznor, there would be no "Alternative" scene as we know it, full stop....

I really liked "With Teeth" - was in my top 10 albums of 2005!

"With Teeth" is really Trent doing a pop album though, let's be honest.... And frankly, the more I listened to it, the more shallow it became to me and disappointment began to creep in, compared to "Pretty Hate Machine", "Downward Spiral" or "The Fragile" it is second-rate... There are some good individual songs on "With Teeth" ("Right Where It Belongs", "Beside You In Time", "Love Is Not Enough" and one or two others, and of course the production itself is excellent as always), but by NIN's own impeccably high standards, it is a very poor album and probably the worst one they've done.... "Year Zero" seems to me to be Trent Reznor getting back to his roots and getting serious... No way NIN are gonna be asked to appear on CD:UK with any of these songs....

how does fail the more extreme forum test and Enter Shikari are allowed in??

my fave NIN songs are (i've only got Downward Spiral and with teeth, so i dont really know other stuff like the Pretty Hate Machine stuff):

saying that managed to get Head like a hole on in the car once, well about the first 30 seconds of it. Mum thought it was a nice radio channel as Johnny Cash was playing before hand. however she was not impressed when she realized i had changed the channel over. normality and smooth fm was soon restored in the car

and they say jazzfunk is not as bad.

It didn't mate, I posted the same thing in the Metal forum as well..... I think NIN are a special case because they sort of straddle both camps in many ways, I dont think you can actually pin down NIN to any particular genre anyway, they are quite unique and no other band really sounds like them, although many have tried to copy their style....

If you like NIN, "Pretty Hate Machine" is an album you simply must own.... In fact, I would say to any music lover that PHM is an album they ought to have because it is a classic album, simple as. As important as "Revolver", "The Queen Is Dead", "Violator", "Trans Europe Express", "The Stone Roses", "Unknown Pleasures", "Low", "Ocean Rain", "Pornography", "Velvet Underground and Nico", "Surfer Rosa", "Never Mind the Bollocks..", "London Calling" or "Nevermind"...

By the way, I'm seeing NIN at Brixton Academy on Sunday night.... Cant fukkin' wait.... I really wanna hear what these new tracks sound like live....

but shouldnt the areas be less about the style of music (as everything is so totally ecclectic and crossgenred these days) and more about targeting certain auds? thought this would suit the k! reader more than the nme/artrocker dude.

however i really so totally wanna get this alb, but fear that an even better versh will be out soon, you know how back cat depts or record conglomerates work!!!

well that 2.5 out of 14 for me then mate  or 3.5 if you count Velvet Underground and Nico twice (.5 for the kraftwerk best of). revolver, low, unknown pleasures and porn. which bands are these. think ive worked out the rest.

the best NIN album since the glory days of "Pretty Hate Machine" and "Downward Spiral"

i quite like(d) broken/fixed too (in fact my most valuable cd is the rare mini cd that came out with the first few hundred releases of fixed)... This makes me interested in this tho - and will make a point of getting this. thanks!

as an aside, i used to be a fan of industrial (Ministry, KMFDM, Skinny Puppy, NIN were my favs) but the quality pretty much died out 10 years ago... wouldn't mind a resurgence in this genre... a couple years ago i wandered into a industrial board and said I used to be fan and here's what I liked - what have i missed? I checked out all the recommendations and belive me, i didn't miss anything! :)

I keep my NIN listening unadulterated and restricted to Pretty Hate Machine, but by the tracks posted I may be checking out this new stuff. Thanks for posting

To be fair though I was only born in 89 and NIN are hardly an act anyone's going to listen to as a kid! The Hand That Feeds was pretty much the first thing I heard by them and it was breath of fresh air to what else was out at the time...

What were the names of some of the acts the folks on this site recommended....? They probably directed you to a lot of wanky, artless "Noise" c**p like Whitehouse or cheesy EBM like XPQ21, Blutengel, SITD or Apoptygma Berzerk I'm suspecting....

There's some good uns out there just now - Reaper are fantastic, CombiChrist, Panic DHH, Wumpscut, the new Skinny Puppy album ("Mythmaker") is frankly amazing, oddball and pretty Avant Garde, they do a lot of interesting things with production and Ohgr's voice.. The new Front Line Assembly album ("Artificial Soldier") is also something worth checking out....

Hopefully, if "Year Zero" has the impact I hope it will, we might see a resurgence of full-on proper Industrial music... Might boost Skinny Puppy's and FLA's sales as well....

I listen to Nine Inch Nails now... What I mean is that it's not the type of stuff you listen to as a young child. Were you listening to Led Zep at 5? ;)

On one level I dont blame you for that (at least that way you don't have to endure two pretty terrible remix albums - "Further Down The Spiral" and "Things Falling Apart"; the fact that "The Fragile" could use about 7 or 8 less songs. or the fact that "With Teeth" does NIN's reputation no real good at all..), but "Broken", "Fixed" and "Downward Spiral" are all well worth listening to, and so is "The Fragile" for the most part, just a shame Trent insisted on making it a double album....

Yes I should do really. I have Further Down the Spiral but never bother with it.

I also like the connection with my fave female artist Tori Amos, who apparently had a brief thing with Trent, and in a lyric in 'Caught a Lite Sneeze' she sings ". . . caught a lite sneeze, dreamed a little dream, made my own pretty hate machine".

Did they do Bite The Hand That Feeds? I remember that off of Need For Speed, great song and "Survivalism" sounds reet too :D
