March 9, 200718 yr Erm..... A big fat 0 from me I'm afraid, this looks like utter and total sh!t... "History" told through the lens of MTV for a totally mentally challenged generation of braindead American teenagers.... Frankly, this piece of garbage makes "Braveheart", "Alexander" and "Kingdom of Heaven" look like History Channel documentaries.... The Persian Empire was one of the most advanced and civilised cultures in the history of this planet, they were not a bunch of deformed, tatooed, body-piercing freaks who look like they just stepped off a Marilyn Manson video.... Insulting to scholars of history, and, given the current political climate, films like this just scream "propaganda" in a very, very loud voice indeed...
March 9, 200718 yr Apparently this is much better than Sin City, although I didn't rate that too much. I think I'll see this. I don't think people expect this to be historically accurate.
March 9, 200718 yr Author Erm..... A big fat 0 from me I'm afraid, this looks like utter and total sh!t... March 9, 200718 yr have you read the original graphic novel? Nope, not yet... But I assume it's probably a lot better than this... Unsurprising that the name 'Zack Snyder' is involved with this, he's the guy who directed the rather dumbed-down remake of Romero's zombie classic "Dawn of the Dead"......
March 9, 200718 yr Apparently this is much better than Sin City, although I didn't rate that too much. I think I'll see this. I don't think people expect this to be historically accurate. I somehow very much doubt that... And in any case, "Sin City" was Noir, and it was set in an alternate reality.. "300" is being advertised as "The True Story of How 300 Spartans held off an Empire", or words to that effect... Once you start using words like 'true' in your advertising, you're making trouble for yourself from the start.... Dont pretend something is 'true' when in fact it's just a load of MTV/CGI sub-"Lord of the Rings" bollocks.... <_<
March 23, 200718 yr I saw the film 2 days ago. It's not a historical documentary, although it is shown that they studied before they make it. It has great virtual effects, great music, great performs. It's an impressive movie to see.
March 23, 200718 yr I saw the film 2 days ago. It's not a historical documentary, although it is shown that they studied before they make it. Well, the Monty Python team had studied up on their history before they made "The Holy Grail" (which is why a lot of the surface and actual period detail is fairly accurate), but they never claimed that it was "the true story of King Arthur"....
March 23, 200718 yr it looks like a gay porn film, all that brawn and leather loincloths. I'll be going to see this pronto :P
March 23, 200718 yr it looks like a gay porn film, all that brawn and leather loincloths.   Oh GAWD yeah, it does tbh..... It's really just some tarted-up Steve Reeves/"Sword and Sandals"/Peplum film with lots of fancy CGI thrown in..... But really, I dont see any actual difference between this and those dodgy dubbed Italian films of the 50s and 60s..... ...Except this one looks even MORE gay than those ever did.....  (no offence intended Russ....)
March 27, 200718 yr i saw this the other day, i was actually tempted to walk out half way through the film -_-
March 27, 200718 yr Well, this sure was one of the most braindead, idiotic films I've seen in recent times... And so incredibly GAY as well... In fact, several conversations that I overheard upon leaving the cinema were basically of the "Well, that was a bit gay..." variety....   Yes, this is just full of young, half naked men in loincloths, all greased up and thrusting their...... spears into one another..... It thinks it's a macho, serious historical action film.. It isn't, and it is nowhere near as good as the Frank Miller graphic novel either (which I did get round to reading just before going to the film)... Seriously, this is no better than any one of these "sword and sandal" films you can see on any given Saturday afternoon on BBC2, and anyone who says it is, is frankly talking out of their arse, strip away all the fancy CGI and the MTV editing style, and basically what you have is a Steve Reeves Peplum movie.. In fact, I would go as far as to say that some of these dodgy old films are more fun than "300" ("The 300 Spartans", the original film based on this particular story certainly is...).... I was just laughing all the way through this really, I was hungover, and this basically was the perfect tonic (actually, hungover or drunk is the best way to see this film tbh...), as for that cheesy "Braveheart-style" ending... I half expected him to say "They may take our lives, but they will never take our FREEDOM!!".. And just why did those Spartan soldiers of however many thousands of years ago utter the battle-cry of the modern day US marines...?? For FUKK sake..... <_< Yes, Hollywood making it blatantly obvious what the real sub-text of this film is.... Nasty Persians (read Arabic Muslims....) Vs Honourable Spartans (read US marines..)... Right-Wing Neo-Con SH!TE..... <_< I probably could've just about coped with the sheer ridiculousness of this film, but this element left a nasty taste in my mouth.... Oh, and just why does King Xerxes look like one of the Goua'ould (or however it's spelt) from "Stargate".....?? And just how does Belios manage to recount the tale of the final battle when King Leonidas has already sent him away...? 5/10... Might've been a bit more without all the Neo-Con subtexts...
March 27, 200718 yr i saw this the other day, i was actually tempted to walk out half way through the film -_- To be honest, me too.... I reckon if I hadn't been hungover and just not arsed to move, I may have walked out....
March 27, 200718 yr the film is hypocritical they are trying to bring their idea and values of "freedom" to the east and battle the ennemies mysticism and tyranny but the spartans had slaves...hello!? and believed in oracles, it is stupid film for trisha audience mentality, the visuals may be impressive but you need more than that to make it a good film plus gerard is a clone of russell crowe's gladiator character with a dodgy accent, and there is something gay about all these men being together all the time and really looking after their bodies wearing very little, at night they are at a gay disco i bet you have to admit the timing of this film is suspicious, we all know the bush admin want a war with Iran aka Persia next and its not a coincidence that every month iran is in the headlines, they are slowly trying to get public opinon against iran and sell a war to the public, its the same thing with iraq the way the politicians and media tried to win the public over to agree to a war, plus the film says its ok to die for the "cause" aka its ok for soldiers to die fighting in iraq and iran its a great honour...wtf!! don't worry or be sad, so are they just fodder? plus doesn't it matter if it was for a legal war of not? hollywood has links to neocons and the think tank that bush listens too, 24 is written by one and is always anti foriengers anti middle east reinforcing the stereotype of the terrorist and trying to promote fear of "muslims", they also tried to justify jack using torture!? so torture is ok now? plus the military has links too, the film "stealth" was in part funded by the military and it was used to try and recruit US male teens with its propaganda, it was also to say to the world the US military is superior in technology and fire power, computer games that glamourise war have links to military websites too, its all a bit dodgy using mind games but not everyone falls for it cause you need more than a film to convince people going to war with iran is ok

Couldn't have said it better myself.... To be fair to "24" though, it hardly portrays its internal domestic Politicians in a very favourable light - in Season 5 you basically had the President of the USA being the big bad guy who was manipulating events and allowing terrorism to happen for his own political agenda, and that shadowy group who were obviously representing US Corporate interests, and various Govt agencies are portrayed as being corrupt, incompetent or complicit with terrorists... So, really nobody comes out smelling of roses in that show... I am incredibly disturbed by the casual nature of the portrayal of torture on that show though, it seems as though it's the first resort for CTU.... <_< As for Gerard Butler, he is a Scottish actor, which makes the (unfavourable) comparisons to "Braveheart" even more apt.... "Braveheart" may have had its faults, but it at least knew how to tell a compelling, epic historical story, even if some things were historically innaccurate, it's portrayal was broadly right and it did what it set out to do - engender debate and discourse (this certainly happened in Scotland, as we voted for our own Parliament a mere few years after this film was made)... This does no such thing, "300" does not actively engage the viewer in historical or any other discourse it is just fodder for the MTV generation and, as you rightly say, it softens us up for the next war in the Middle East...... In short - this is thinly-veiled propaganda.... Just as Hitler used stories of the Norse Gods and ancient Scandinavian legends to justify the actions of his "Third Reich", so too do the Hollywood Neo Cons, very "Goebbels-like", (ab)use the mythology and legends of Ancient Greece to justify their Govt's Imperialistic ambitions.... Compare this shower of sh!t to the serious, sobering, profoundly moving and incredibly powerful duo of films made by Clint Eastwood - "Flags of Our Fathers" and "Letters From Iwo Jima", two astounding films which set out to explode the myths of war being heroic or desirable, and that there are two very complex sides to every story.... Eastwood emerges with vastly more credit than the morons who made this film.... What incredible irony, because I've always seen Eastwood as being the right-wing cheerleader, now with age, he seems to be becoming far more contemplative and critical.... You know what..... I take back my 5/10... I was far too generous........ 2/10 now seems more appropriate...... And it only gets the 2 points because it is so clearly and hysterically Gay while trying its damndest not to be.....
March 30, 200718 yr I saw this last nite, I nearly fell to sleep half way thru it, for someone like me who is into comic and graphic novels, the film is based on a graphic novel, I actually prefer the Graphic novel to the movie, the effects are all computerised, too much in your face, and a decapitation which had me lol, while I was told to button it by someone behind me, anyone with half a brain should stay away from it, its just overhyped

The film is.......considerably less so.... Reminded me a lot of the pretty bloody disastrous book-to-screen adaption of "Eragon" actually in terms of its sheer naffness and the total dumbing-down of themes within the original texts... Overhyped drivel, it really is... I just dunno how the hell it managed to get so many good reviews.... Were the critics actually shown the right film...??
March 31, 200718 yr Overhyped drivel, it really is... I just dunno how the hell it managed to get so many good reviews.... Were the critics actually shown the right film...?? If I had to review the film for a magazine I would have canned it, and gave it a zero rating, the new Spiderman movie looks far better than 300  mind you... you cannot compare a Spiderman movie to it.
April 1, 200718 yr im a huge history buff and usually point out the flaws in all ancient themed moveis such as Gladiator and Troy....but i wouldnt even waste my time watching 300
