Tony Blair disclosed yesterday that his expected successor, Gordon Brown, has already ruled out using increased revenue from economic growth to reduce the soaring tax burden.

Brown plans to utilise the money taken from taxes to pump even more cash into failing services, as well as into public -sector wages and pension schemes.

Do you think its fair that the average family will miss out on an extra £1,300 a year in potential tax cuts? Have we been taxed enough already? Can we guarantee our money is being put to good use?

How much more tax should go into failing services?

But even mortgages are starting to creep up :(

I dont mind paying taxes if you can see them being spent on things to make things better, but the amount of waste on bureaucracy in the health service and education is ridiculous.

Precisely... But, let's bear in mind who it was that actually brought in all this NHS/Education bureaucracy in the first place - the Tories... Their NHS 'reforms' have led us to the place that we find ourselves in now... Time to put an end to the Trusts, a wholesale cull of managers, accountants and various other 'administrators' who are just creaming off the NHS and put the NHS back under Central Govt control.... I cannot believe for a minute that the way the NHS was managed before the Trust system came in was in any way worse or more inefficient than what is happening now...

I have no problems with paying taxes, but I do have an issue when they go on entirely the wrong things, and I would say that how our services are being run at the moment is quite a national disgrace.... Just HOW much taxpayers money went on that NHS computer system that went totally t*ts up, and as it turns out, wasn't even necessary in the first place....?? Private Eye recently ran a pretty shocking expose into the whole sorry mess in their recent issue.... £12 BILLION down the drain at the last count..... <_< <_<

And don't even get me started on what we are spending on the "War on Terror", ID cards and the proposals for fukkin' Trident, something else that isn't necessary and we don't need.....

Isn't the high tax rate because we're an island and everything has to be imported?

Even though in the USA it's only 6.5% and Europe is about 8 or 8.5%, 17.5% is TOO high isn't it?

You are thinking of VAT

Income tax in UK is 40% for those earning over 30k a year and 24% for those earning under that

Oh, wasn't sure if that was called tax aswell

Do people in the USA etc. pay tax then? Or is it very little because they pay for medicalcare etc.

10% for the first so much, 20% then 24%

Yeah, Craig is right, you're thinking of VAT... Which is certainly TOO FUKKIN' HIGH..... <_<

But then, we have the Tories to thank for that one.... Not that 'Nu Labour' has done a damn thing to actually reverse the trend...

ahhhh but he has changed all that now

I am in an exclusive band of people who are worse offwith new tax & NI contributions ..... I will now be £10 worse off :o

To be honest governments policy for to long has been to spend more and tax more.

This is neither effective government or productive in terms of results as all government departments and business want more and more control. So in short the system is setup to be an unproductive for governments and removing money from the systems for businesses.

The way out of this problem is for responsibility to be squarely returned to the people, at this point few people wish to be entirely responsible for there life and situation and hence they will be taxed more and more with a continuously less effective return for the tax.

This will either result is a major cultural change in people's attitude or ultimately a collapse of government entirely.

I see the later happening in the US within the next generation where the central government seems to have gone beyond it's purpose of helping the people and instead now only exists to maintain individual self interest while creating an illusion it's actually helping the population.

soon we (and by we i mean YOU) are gonna have to pay to just walk on the street. 5p for every step kmt
