Posted March 14, 200718 yr http://www.whats-on.com/content/Feature/web-lg/debbiegibson_0707.jpg Electric Youth Deborah Gibson Brings Back the ’80s at Polly Esther’s While certain pop princesses are self-destructing right before fans’ eyes(Britney Spears), the original pop princess is alive and well, and ready to bring the ’80s back to Las Vegas. Performing at the Stratosphere’s new nightclub Polly Esther’s, former teen queen Deborah “Debbie†Gibson will have club-goers dancing to her “Foolish Beat†when she opens the quad-club March 16. The first megaclub in Las Vegas, Polly Esther’s brings all of the New York City nightclub group’s signature nightclubs—the ’70s-themed Polly Esther’s, the ’80s-themed Culture Club and the ’90s-themed Nerve Ana—together under one roof, as well as Suite 2000, a club themed around the current decade that’s specially designed for Las Vegas. And while many popular acts from the ’70s and ’80s may try to disassociate themselves from the decades that made them famous, Gibson says she enjoys reliving her teen idol days and is looking forward to performing at Vegas’ newest nightclub. “Obviously, the ’80s were very good to me,†Gibson told What’s On while waiting for a cup of coffee. “But I have to admit, I’m a big ’70s fan. The ’90s, not as much, but the ’70s, as a pure music fan, the songs were so melodic. They just made you feel good.†Having had a successful career on Broadway following her days on top of the Billboard charts, Gibson is that rare ’80s pop star who hasn’t subjected herself to “The Surreal Life†for a career boost. Not that she hasn’t been approached…a lot. However, Gibson says she isn’t out for attention, and would rather “hold out for the real stuff.†“If you just want to be a personality, reality television is great,†Gibson said. “But then that upstages who you really are. Unless a project is something that’s going to feed my music career or is something I really want to do (like last year’s ‘Skating with Celebrities’), I don’t want to do it.†Even though the New York native has lived a pretty normal life as far as former child stars go, Gibson says she understands what today’s troubled young celebrities are going through. When asked about Britney Spears, Gibson admits there were times in her own life when she could have had an emotional meltdown, but instead turned her focus inward and concentrated on her craft. “It’s important to concentrate on your work and ignore external factors like the media,†Gibson said. “I really feel for her. I think her problems have less to do with her and more to do with her surroundings. I was very lucky that my mom was always hyperaware of my psychiatric state. She knew when it was good for me to work and time for me to take a break. You can’t expect someone so young to be in tune with that on his or her own.†While as a performer she may have made the transition from childhood to adulthood successfully, Gibson knows that she’s never far from her ’80s pop star shadow. Nevertheless, the singer-turned-Broadway-actress says she is grateful for starting her career when she did. Coming up at a time when aspiring singers performed in three clubs a night, four times a week, Gibson says she was able to gain a loyal fan base that has followed her to this day. And although she’s aware that she is often lumped together with her former rival, ’80s mall queen Tiffany, Gibson is hoping fans who show up for her concert check out her one-time competitor when she performs at Polly Esther’s March 17. “We’re such different performers,†Gibson said. “She’s so awesome live. Hopefully, people will come to see both of us and relive their youth.†And although Gibson may have had more hit singles than Tiffany, the 36-year-old does admit that there’s one thing Tiffany beats her in. “I just saw Music and Lyrics, and I had to laugh that I beat Tiffany in the celebrity boxing match,†Gibson said, referring to the fictional television show featured in the Hugh Grant/Drew Barrymore romantic comedy. “Tiffany’s a strong girl—she would kick my ass.â€
March 14, 200718 yr Deborah Gibson doesn't sound right! As a Deborah myself there does come a stage in every Deb's development where you have to move on from Debbie, especially with the whole 'Debbie Does Dallas' stigma . . . !!! Deborah (Debbie) Harry did it. But 'Deborah' Gibson???
