Posted March 16, 200718 yr whats the effing point?... this bi-anual charade is nothing short of a big up party for the well off so they can feel good about aiding others.. but does it actually achieve anything?... ok, it helps keep people alive, but my big problem with it is that it must go hand in hand with birth control. without this next time we will be needing to raise even more money to keep more alive and the cycle continues. poverty in africa etc is a serious problem that we wealthy should try to adrress, their land though can only support a given amout of people, so im all for aid (i give monthly, oxfam) but please, lets have some birth control too...
March 16, 200718 yr I agree with the sentiments tbh... I really hate all this 'Telethon' c**p just on general principle.... Why the hell should Charity be only for one night every year or every two years.....? Ridiculous really..... <_< As for the comments on "Birth Control" - absolutely spot on... But of course we all know why it's a problem dont we...? Because of dogmatic edicts from the various religions which dominate the socio-political scene in Africa... Unless you tackle the problems of over-population and HIV/AIDS, then all the "Comic Relief" nights in the world aint gonna do sh!t to improve the situation in Africa... And of course there are other factors to be taken into consideration - Govt corruption, exploitative Western corporations, the debt crisis caused by the depraved indifference of the World Bank, IMF, G8...... Nope, sorry, "Comic Relief" is really like just trying to put a band-aid on multiple gunshot wounds....
March 16, 200718 yr Rob the main problem in Africa is corrupt regimes who syphon money and aid off into Swiss bank accounts and also the catholic church which is resulting in over breeding because the catholic church will not allow contraception and birtn control so no matter how much money we throw at Africa it is just going to waste, the pope and previous popes have a lot of blood on their hands

The Corruption Fairy...?". If the Catholic Church has blood on its hands, then Western Corporations (for example Shell in Nigeria, the whole Ken Saro Wiwa affair..) have just as much on theirs as well...

I agree with you in that context but in countries like Etheopia and Sudan 2 of the most badly affected regions for famine and starvation there is very little western corporate activity. Etheopia and Sudan is in my opinion in the state it is largely because of the catholic church and its policies on birth control and contraception, America has a lot to answer for too with its medicine price cartels but until the catholic church wakes up from the dark ages and changes its policy on birth control and contraception things will not improve in Africa Edited March 16, 200718 yr by Vic Vega
March 16, 200718 yr whats the effing point?... :( :( :( :( :( I haven't even got the energy to go into this. Global/political/religious issues considered, who with any kind of moral conscience can turn their back on human suffering, in any shape or form? If everyone just did one good thing to try and redress all the c*** things we do, the world could be a slightly better place. Oh, and Comic Relief money doesn't just go to Africa . . .
March 16, 200718 yr Author :( :( :( :( :( I haven't even got the energy to go into this. If everyone just did one good thing to try and redress all the c*** things we do, the world could be a slightly better place. Oh, and Comic Relief money doesn't just go to Africa . . . my point is that giving aid is only a quick fix solution and whats needed is a long term solution, a sustainable solution. i never have given a penny to comic relief, nor do i intend to.. i do give to charities though including oxfan by monthly dd. i dont need some 'celeb' to make me laugh before i part with my dough, ill do it because i see the need. so yes, i am doing a small thing towards ending human suffering. id support comic relief if it did try to solve the core problems of poverty, including birth control.
March 16, 200718 yr Author whats coming across now (a report) is the amount of hiv there is there... erm.. have they no morals?.. 14 kids from 3 mothers (2 dead).. this highlights what i mean, there needs to be a huge shift in how the problems are dealt with to prevent this tragedy.

Its not them though Rob its the way they have been brainwashed by the catholic church that they can not use contraceptives, they are shagging which is human nature but can't protect themselves because they have been brainwashed by the succession of VILE popes
March 16, 200718 yr When Pope John Paul II died there was calls for him to be elevated into a fukkin saint when in reality with his primitive views that belonged in the dark ages he was responsible for as many if not more deaths than Stalin and Hitler !

(im not in favour of free for all sex in any culture, im not promiscuous, i dont agree with casual sex ... im not just getting or suggesting that they are particualy any worse then us!)
March 16, 200718 yr Author a little research into the work of Comic relief and you would find it! ..... is why they have a separate fund for catholics (or anyone who opposes abortion / contraception) to contribute to. if there is then it isnt evident, however if im guilty of not researching comic relief then ill stand corrected :)
March 16, 200718 yr if there is then it isnt evident, however if im guilty of not researching comic relief then ill stand corrected :) well the more 'sensitive' work wouldn't make for good TV - they show what they think will get your heart strings to open your purse strings!
March 16, 200718 yr i know that, hence why i stated that there needs to be a huge shift in the way the problems tackled. chucking food at them aint gonna solve owt. birth control, contraception and some moral values would be a start! I agree with you in reality tbh, can't find fault in what you say. The problems in Africa won't even begin to be tackled until we have a pope that understands the modern world and the realities of it and reverses the vile edicts on contraception, there needs to be real leadership from a forward thinking pope on this issue or people will just keep dying, no amount of aid or comic relief nights or pop concerts will change that

March 16, 200718 yr Author well the more 'sensitive' work wouldn't make for good TV - they show what they think will get your heart strings to open your purse strings! emotional blackmail doesnt work with me... i use my brain (which is why i give regularly)
