March 19, 200718 yr ARIA Chart Commentary - 19/03/07 (Thanks to Gavin Ryan) It was possible that Hinder's "Lips of an Angel" could have stayed at the top of the charts for another week as they were doing a promo tour around Australia this past week, but unfortunately the song hasn't stayed at the top for an eighth week, stalling at 7 weeks in total, but their album has climbed back to the top of the charts, and more on that down below. But the new No.1 single in the country becomes the third No.1 for Newcastle's Silverchair. "Straight Lines" is the lead single from their forthcoming fifth studio album entitled "Young Modern" (out March 29th), and it's the first time in 10 years and 7 weeks since the group was last at the top of the Australian singles chart. "Freak" was their second No.1 here back in the last week of January 1997, spending two weeks at the top, whilst their very first single and No.1 was back in October 1994 with "Tomorrow" which stayed at the chart pinnacle for six straight weeks. The single has been No.1 for the past three weeks on the Digital Download Charts, and achieves Gold Accreditation in it's first week (35,000 sales). Silverchair also become the first GROUP since The Easybeats in the 1960's to have had three No.1 singles in their career, also The Seekers are in this elite pack with three No.1 singles, and these three acts are the only Australian GROUPS to have had the most No.1's by a Group, no one GROUP has achieved more than three chart-toppers. (I emphasized the "Group" as there are plenty of solo acts who have had more chart toppers). It's the first time in the past 67 years that a song with the word "Straight" in a songs title has gone to No.1, but it's the third song with the word "Line" in it's title, the other two were "Pipeline" by The Chantays (April 1963) and "Tired of Toein' the Line" by Rocky Burnette (June 1980). It's also the 920th No.1 in this country, and the 135th Australian Performed chart-topper, the last of which was the December 2006 track by Damien Leith "Night of My Life". The former UK No.1 single "Grace Kelly" by Mika debuts at No.6 this week, and his UK No.1 album "Life in Cartoon Motion" is released tomorrow (Monday). This English based artist was born in Beirut and was raised in Paris before moving to London as a young teenager. This is his first Australian chart single, and it's the first time since November 1956 that Grace Kelly herself has been on the charts (she is sampled at the start and end of the song) when she had a No.3 hit with Bing Crosby on the Cole Porter penned track "True Love". Making her return to the charts this week at No.24 is Candice Alley with her new single "Before You Go". Her biggest single was the No.5 track "Fallen" back in June 2003, she also had the No.45 single "Dream the Day Away" in September of that year. Close behind Candice this week is another group who have been absent from our charts for over 10-and-a-half years. Take That's "Patience" have been in the Top 100 for the past seven weeks, but due to the guys doing a massive promo tour around the country this week, the song enters the Top 50 this week at No.29. This song was No.1 for four weeks in January on the UK charts, and it's follow-up "Shine" is currently spending a second week at the top of their home countries charts. And lastly entering at No.45 is the new single for Bow Wow, "Shortie Like Mine" featuring Chris "Run it!" Brown as guest vocalist. Bow Wow's last charting single was the No.16 single from March 2006 "Like You" which featured Ciara on guest vocals. As I mentioned above, Hinder were in the country this week doing promo's for their album and single, which has in their respective releases done a swap-about. Their single "Lips of an Angel" has gone from 1 to 3, whilst their album "Extreme Behavior" has gone from 3 to 1. It's now it's second week at the top of the Australian Album Charts, having spent one previous week back in the last week of February (26th). It's the first album since November 2006 to climb back to the top of the charts, when Human Nature's "Dancing in the Streets - The Songs of Motown II" reclaimed the top of the charts for another three weeks after it's initial one week No.1 peak. The highest new entry this week comes in at No.4, and is the debut release for Australian artist Josh Pyke. "Memories and Dust" has produced two Top 40 singles in the October 2006 title track which reached No.39, and the current single which peaked at No.32 last week "Lines on Palms". He has previously released the EP "Feeding the Wolves" which was nominated for an ARIA at last years awards. Last week Gwen Stefani finally hit the Top 10 with her second solo album "The Sweet Escape", and now this week it jumps up 5 places to No.5, probably due to the title track now spending it's fourth week at No.2, and her just announced August tour. And the other promo tourists this week as I mentioned above were Take That, who's new album "Beautiful World" enters the charts at No.32. It's there fourth studio album, and fifth to chart (Greatest Hits is the other), with their biggest album being their last "Nobody Else" from 1995 which reached the Top 5 nationally.
