Eurovision row puts Scooch in the dock

Source: Music week

A row has broken out over the competition to represent the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest, after winners Scooch were accused of miming.

The band won a public vote on Saturday to represent the UK in the contest, narrowly beating Cyndi. However, fellow contestant Brian Harvey is reported to have accused Scooch of cheating by relying on hidden backing singers.

The band denies the claim, insisting that they did sing the track, although they admitted using two off-stage backing singers.

It was not the only controversial incident on the night. Host Terry Wogan initially announced that French singer Cyndi had won, only to be corrected by co-host Fearne Cotton.

The 52nd Eurovision Song Contest takes place in Helsinki on May 10-12.

Absolutely, if it can be proven that they were miming, then the whole thing should be rendered null and void... I think this whole thing with Wogan and Cotton is rather suspicious as well tbh.... DID they actually win....?

FFS...I just read this in the Mirror-its front page news!

Justin Hawkins and Brian Harvey are sore losers...if they chose to have their backing singers off stage they could have done...the public were not duped...nobody even cares about the vocals. Scooch gave by far and away the best PERFORMANCE and thats what the UK voted for...

I dunno about Brian Harvey, but how can Justin Hawkins be a sore loser if he's complaining about people other than himself not winning (he was very vocal in his support for Big Brovaz, Cyndi and Beverlei)....? Did you actually bother to read anything he said.....? Or are you just blindly following a line of bullsh!t...? Scootch suck dogsh!t, simple as.. There were better songs on the day, we chose the worst one and we'll get our arses kicked in May because of it.... Eurovision has actually moved on from this camp, pretend Abba bullsh!t as Lordi winning last year fukkin' proves....

I have never defended Justin Hawkins in my life, but on this one occasion, he was spot on... The British public IS stupid...

To quote the article in the mirror

Justin said 'f*** this, f*** this, f*** the public, f*** Eurovision I'll make it on my own anyway'

So yes that does sound like a sore loser

You're taking one thing that someone says in the heat of the moment when passions are running incredibly high though, and just distorting it.... His more measured response came later (you know, when the guy actually had time to think..? and calm down a bit..) when he voiced his support for other acts whom he felt were unjustifiably robbed....

He was p!ssed off in that one particular moment, and considering the shower of utter sh!te he lost out to, who can blame him..?

says...

Justin Hawkins, who failed to qualify for the super-final after what was considered a horrendous performance by many, has suggested that the British public are either racists or stupid for not voting for Big Brovas or Beverlei Brown - whom he just happened to be duetting with. He stormed off stage with a foul mouthed rant that can only remind Eurovision fans of Silvia Night's outburst after failing to qualify for the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest final in Athens. Brian Harvey, also concerned about failed plans to revive his career, has accused the winning band of 'duping the public' by failing to show their two backing singers on stage.

The media frenzy in the UK about Scooch and the Making Your Mind Up show is growing daily, and today hit the front pages of some papers, we believe only for the second time since 1981. Whilst the reasons for the publicity seems to be sour grapes of artists that risk losing their record deals. The publicity is likely to prove positive in the end for both Scooch and the Eurovision Song Contest.

To clarify that Scooch acted within the rules of Making Your Mind Up and the Eurovision Song Contest, the BBC Head of entertainment released a statement saying that the show "followed EBU rules to the letter - all vocals were live, and having off-camera supporting singers occurs regularly in tv shows and especially the Eurovision". esctoday.com can confirm that there were two off-camera backing singers, making a total of six performers, in line with EBU rules. The option of having backing singers on or off stage was offered to all six acts in the final.

This is a common Eurovision practice and has been done many times, in 2006 and over recent years. Precious performed at the Eurovision Song Contest with an additional unseen singer behind the set. Carola finished in 5th place last year for Sweden, with backing singers that did not appear on stage until the second half of the song, but still sang before they appeared and many acts have additional singers that are unseen my the cameras. The rule is that a maximum number of six singers/performers can perform, but there is no rule to say that they must all be shown on stage.

Scooch reformed to do the show but had little expectations of victory with their song, flying the flag (for you). They had less exposure in the build-up than any other artists and no record company supporting them. Artists such as Brian Harvey and Justin Hawkins were hoping to use the show to kickstart their musical careers, and seem to have found their plans were not supported by the British public, who were won over on the night by the Scooch routine and brand of pop.

Justin Hawkins' outburst can quite simply be compared to Silvia Night. Having been undone by the voting public in a heavily scrutinised televote, he accused the British public of either being rascist or stupid for not voting for Big Brovas or his duetting partner, Beverlei Brown. The same public that voted for Precious, Imaani and Javine in the last ten years. It should also be pointed out that the view of many inside the studio was that had Beverlei Brown performed without Hawkins, she would have won the ticket to Helsinki.

He then falsely claimed that the BBC 'stiched up' the show, which is highly unlikely in a period where watchdogs are paying very close attention to televised public votes after recent scandals with televoting charges and distortions. He then accused Scooch of cheating and duping the public when they did nothing that is outside of the well known rules or different to many Eurovision artists in recent years.

United Kingdom semi final commentator Paddy O'Connell spoke to esctoday.com this morning and stated:

"The best way to think about it is the rule of six. It came to our attention already with the Israeli entry because they had seven members and one had to drop out. This is just the same thing from the other side. I don't feel that this is a problem, many countries have additional off-camera singers. They certainly were not miming, but I don't think it would have done them any harm to have them in view. Now that they are picked, we want them to do the best that they can".

Speaking about Cyndi and the show, he said: "There were six million people watching and every time something like this comes up it just adds to the fascination. I think Cyndi's career will be aided by the show and she was very gratious. It's raised the knowledge of some good singers".

So...Carola and Precious also did the same thing...

And good point about how 'racist' we are in Britain sending through Javine and Imaani...

There is no denying in my opinion that Beverlei Brown gave a great performance and I would love to hear more of her music...its Justin Hawkins that ruined the song

He said 'racist OR stupid'... Guess that just leaves stupid then.... And considering what a mistake Daz fukkin' Sampson turned out to be, well, 'stupid' seems pretty spot on if you ask me. Maybe Sylvia was right to have her strop...

And Scootch are getting press for all the wrong reasons....

Any press is good press...who honestly thought that Scooch would ever make the front page of a paper, I doubt they even did that when they were (minorly) successful back in 2000

I wouldn't say the UK is stupid, just not serious when it comes to selecting a Eurovision song...Other reality shows are never won by the joke acts, but Eurovision is seen as and treated as a joke by the UK public...hence Scooch and Daz...

..And hence why we get our arses kicked every year... And then when we do, we witter on about "Europe not liking us, and being anti-British"....

I agree with that^ If we actually sent a good song by a decent, recognisable act, Morrissey, Mika and Scissor Sisters would all be great, we would do far better than we usually do. It's because we always send a load of $h!t by acts whose careers have gone down the pan a long time ago...

Justin Hawkins is a joke.. as are his ex band... he gave a tune-free performance last weekend and people didn't vote for him.. is he REALLY surprised? Maybe he's back snorting the Colombian stuff, because no sane man would have such an inflated idea of their own apparent brilliance without it.

And the Chronic Kitten singer.... it's not been mentioned or discussed... but that song WAS Son of a Preacher Man - identical - how did she get away with that one?

I think that if we had the right song and performance, it wouldn't matter...if Lordi were British then the UK would have won last year...

Our luck will change I'm sure...I do think that the reason the UK has done badly in the last 10 years is mainly because of song choices, and many of our songs have been far weaker than others

However, political and especially Balkan and Baltic block voting does play a huge part, but I doubt it would effect the winning song, it just means that none of the Balkan states will ever score under 20 points whereas we don't have loyal neighbours to rely on for points so we HAVE to pick a good song

I know I'm in the minority but I like the Scooch song, I think it had a great performance, yes I did pay 25p to vote for it, and no I don't feel conned about there being 2 extra backing singers...many artists do this

Cyndi and Brian got away with You Raise me up and I Believe I can fly copies as well :P

So true! She Probably would have had a better chance if Justin wasn't on the song. Also, it was blatantly obvious Scooch were miming

Cyndi sang a re-worded version of one of the worst songs ever recorded - My Heart Will Go On....

I'm pretty sure it doesnt break the rules at all - The rules state that an act may have up to six 6 performers all of which must sing live provided the backing ingers were live i see no problem at all.

People accusing them of not singing live just need to listen to the song again - it is blatently live as they miss notes at the start

i dont think any of them were miming to be honest if you listen to the live and pre- recorded versions you can tell.....
