Jennifer Lopez currently has the #1 single in Italy with Que Hiciste

I have heard it and it's far better than many of her English singles.

Anyone think it will chart here. Just because it's in Spanish. I very much doubt it will get a UK release unless she records it in English.

It's pathetic that the UK music industry (and much of the public) are so bias against recordings in a foreign language yet it is expected non-English speaking countries my recordings in English.

Also some of the foreign language recordings are better than many English language recordings.

Take Shakira as an example. Did they release La Tortura as an A-side - not a chance yet it was miles better than Don't Bother which got an A-side release.

To be fair Dont Bother is one of my fave ever songs lol so im not going to agree with that but I do get your point, i think it will chart on downloads, low down in the top 75 maybe, number 70 or something.
Anastacia/Eros - I Belong To You was one of Europe's biggest selling singles, yet it was cancelled for a uk release because eros sung in italion

If a foreign song is good enough it will catch on in the UK...record companies just don't expect them to do well so barely bother promoting them

An obvious example is Alizee's Moi Lolita which was a great pop song and went top 10...

wrong. plenty of good songs in foreign languages dont catch on in the UK, most don't even get the chance to do well.

Euro Music - you always slag off the UK record companies and much of the UK public because a song is sung in a foreign language. You then follow it up with a series of non sequiturs that actually don't prove your point. I can tell from your first paragraph what is to follow in the rest of your post.

Simple fact is: to have a massive hit = sing in English.

In Europe many acts have hits elsewhere when sung in their own language, but there are bigger hits they can have if they sing in English. It's an international language.

though I agree with you about La Tortura - it should have been massive...

That's exactly my point...if radio airplayed these songs to the extent that they spin Mika and Kaiser Chiefs on an hourly basis then they would do better...I am a fan of a huge number of foreign language songs, mostly Shakira's whole Spanish back catalogue...

La Tortura could have been very big with more exposure and airplay but UK stations are scared to play foreign songs as they think that listeners will feel alienated to hear something not in English

my last comment (I'm not picking on you, honestly!) is how come you fawn at Jennifer Lopez when you slag off the more beautiful and more talented Beyonce! I think you call her Slagonce - she's far, far better than Lopez...
All just opinions though. J.Lo has more of an ability to re-invent her image, thats always important.

I agree with both you and EM to an extent, radio won't play much foreign language music as it DOES make listeners tune out. But English language songs do better in Europe as people are used to hearing the language and are more likely to recognise the lyrics - Europeans grow up hearing the English language everywhere on radio and are more likely to be receptive to the songs sung in that language.

If Jennifer released that song here, I wouldn't buy it even if it was good or not.

I like to listen to music that's sung in a language that I can understand, so I can sing along.

As for La Tortura, am I wrong in thinking there was an English version?

I swear I've heard it sung in English!

We don't have anything to do with non-English speaking music but that's because its the only real language we speak, so we don't understand it, but most of the rest of Europe speaks their native and English on top of that

And nobody's making them record it in English so it can sell more, at the end of the day they're the ones chasing sales

The British charts are probably the most diverse charts in the world so we need some credit, we've got plenty of variety in that sense

On Oral Fixation Vol.2, it was sung in English by Shakira during the chorus only.

Sweetie, there are loads of languages in Europe, most countries speak their own and English. However foreign languages, excluding English, can have an impact on their charts unlike England. The Italians and the Swiss dont speak Spanish, yet Que Hiciste is huge there already, same with Greece. Its just being able to appreciate the music.

Wind your neck in skittle

The UK chart is more competitive, and we're not a mutli-language nation, if they are to start with then they're obviously more tolerant of music in different languages

Also, isn't most countries charts east of Germany based on airplay anyways?

I don't think that it matters that this jlo song is in spanish because she is big enough to make it chart well over here if promoted. Foriegn language music does do badly in the uk tho, hardly any songs on the tv/ radio are spanish. La Tortura should have been released in my opinion, think it would have done well.

Some songs do ok in the uk tho, for example:

Alizee's Moi Lolita

Daddy yankee - Gasolina

Juanes La Camisa Negra

Las Ketchup -The ketchup song

I think La tortura could have been added to this list if it had been released.. i think jlo will go in at around 20-25

Also the music that is big in the uk is very different from what is big anywhere else in the world, so that is another reason why other language music doesn't do well here. Alot of the general public don't care about any other country or its culture, and they don't understand any other language.. so they don't see why they should listen to it. Alot go to spain and hear the odd song on holiday and love it tho .... eg la tortura
