Posted March 23, 200718 yr Having seen Killers twice before, I was not expecting this gig to be worth the extortionate face value of the ticket. Just two years ago, the Killers had an amazing debut album under their belts, packed with tunes that could all have been singles. They did however lack the ability to play pulsating live sets and match the energy of Hot Fuss. How things change. http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/1386/16killerswa3.jpg The support for the night was Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, who could not have looked more uninterested if they have tried. Not bothering to talk to a lacklustre crowd, they played a typically musically-skilful set, but bored the sell-out crowd quickly. Once they had left, the roadies prepared an elaborate set, with ‘Sam’s Town’ dazzling in neon lights above the stage and tumbleweed scattered everywhere – an embrace of American culture. Already things were noticeably different from 2005. Once the group arrived on stage - complete with facial hair, bootlace ties and waistcoats - the NEC erupted. They epically launched straight into the first three songs off the new album, with every lyric belted out by the faithful crowd. Lead singer Brandon Flowers was in fine voice, effortlessly hitting every note, as were the rest of the band – something The Killers seemed to find difficult in their early days. The addition of a session guitarist/pianist to the line-up no doubt aided this improvement. Another possible reason for this is that Flowers does not seem to be as nervous as he used to be on stage. Where as he used to look like a rabbit caught in headlights, he now struts around like a young Mick Jagger, taking the spotlight and serenading each section of the 13,000 strong crowd. They were obviously enjoying themselves as much as the friendly audience was, which made for a very special gig. The fact that between songs, Flowers still modestly jitters and falters when talking to the crowd made things all the better – a welcomed change from the arrogance of many frontmen (take note Johnny Borrell). It was a hit-packed set, ending on Mr. Brightside before a five-song encore, which saw the band brilliantly cover Joy Division’s ‘Shadow Play’, and Flowers don the bass for new single ‘For Reasons Unknown’. For enjoyment value, the gig was top-notch, even if ‘Sam’s Town’ is a much weaker album than ‘Hot Fuss’. Although they are not as musically gifted as a band such as Muse, the improvement from 2005 was immeasurable. Anybody going to see them at any of the festivals this summer, you are in for an all-American treat. SOURCE
