it was on the news and my older sister was round and she was saying "why are they bloody apologising for, trying to look good? it happened years ago for gods sake"

I think it's a load of twaddle personally. Where do you draw the line? Every country has something well dubious in its history. Governments would spend all their time apologising to other countries/nationalities. To my mind it's a publicity stunt. Better they put their minds to stopping injustice today than apologising for something that happened hundreds of years ago.

Oh, and given that the Romans were one of the biggest 'slavers' in history I expect an apology from the Italian Govt any time.
Stupid, apologising will achieve nothing and i'm guessing our govourment obviously want something or they wouldn't be doing this. If anything we should be apoligising to Iraq.

When a film as powerful as "Amazing Grace" hits the cinemas and it shows the courage and great principle of William Wilberforce (a thing rare as a hen's tooth - a truly DECENT, HONOURABLE politician of great conviction), then we should celebrate that we were the first of the Western nations to OUTLAW this disgusting practice over 250 years ago, our American friends continued to ply their disgusting trade in slaves for over a hundred years after we stopped... Although, it must never be forgotten that it is in the slave trade that the roots of racism has its beginnings...

So, our Labour Government can apologise for something they had no control over and no involvement in, and yet refuse to apologise for Iraq, which is entirely of their doing.....  What the fukk......????

Rome was a City-State though, there was no "Italy" as such... And didn't the Romans enslave many from the Northern and Southern areas of what is now called Italy too...? It'd be kinda awkward apologising to yourself really....

Agree, and not to mention slavery was also common among african nations before they were colonized by Europe, tribes enslaved each other it was common, so they´d have to apologise to themselves? Racism exist from white to black people just like it exist among different black groups in Africa.

That´s exactly the reason... It´s easy to apologise for something you have nothing to do with, you don´t take the blame but you look good for apologising. It´s much harder to apologise for current stuff. Maybe they are waiting to apologise next century...

well its true that historically many nations who fought a war/battle and lost were put into slavery... this happend throughout the world, but maybe we should have known better as we were supposed to be a more civilised christian country.
That bloke who protested in the middle of that ceremony today is an absolute tosser. -_- People like that annoy the hell out of me.

Exactly, the bible says all men are created equal.... So, all these "good Christians" who were involved with, or owned slaves were hypocrites of the worst kind... Wilberforce was a genuine Christian and he formed his Abolitionist movement on that very principle... Pity that certain Politicians today who claim to be Christian don't follow Wilberforce's principled example, maybe things like Iraq might not happen....

People from every religion owned slaves throughout history though. Some of the biggest slave traders in Africa were Moslem. Hypocrisy was never/is never just confined to Christianity.
