We all know of songs which were written, either about Elvis or where there is some reference to him, but I found this link on Wilipedia which lists many of them :) Wondering if there are any more ;)

I came across it when I was looking at a clip on YouTube by Bob Dylan called Went To See The Gypsy

Elvis Tribute from Bob Dylan in 1970

Dylan wrote "Went To See The Gypsy" after his first meeting with Elvis Presley. Several references are made regarding Presley's career move in Las Vegas, but there's also a mention of a "little Minnesota town," a rare instance where Dylan references his own childhood. Are They really met or it was only Dylan's fantasy? I don't know...

WENT TO SEE THE GYPSY

(Words and Music by Bob Dylan)

1970, 1976 Big Sky Music

Went to see the gypsy,

Stayin' in a big hotel.

He smiled when he saw me coming,

And he said, "Well, well, well."

His room was dark and crowded,

Lights were low and dim.

"How are you?" he said to me,

I said it back to him.

I went down to the lobby

To make a small call out.

A pretty dancing girl was there,

And she began to shout,

"Go on back to see the gypsy.

He can move you from the rear,

Drive you from your fear,

Bring you through the mirror.

He did it in Las Vegas,

And he can do it here."

Outside the lights were shining

On the river of tears,

I watched them from the distance

With music in my ears.

I went back to see the gypsy,

It was nearly early dawn.

The gypsy's door was open wide

But the gypsy was gone,

And that pretty dancing girl,

She could not be found.

So I watched that sun come rising

From that little Minnesota town.

Wow never guesssd that was about Elvis oh God I'll be learning that one  cheers Carole

Remember Dave or Paul, I think it was, mentioning it on the 18s some time ago, but I'd forgotten about it until I came across it today, purely by accident

Calling Elvis by Dire Straits

Calling Elvis - is anybody home

Calling Elvis - I'm here all alone

Did he leave the building

Or can he come to the phone

Calling Elvis - I'm here all alone

Well tell him I was calling just to wish him well

Let me leave my number - heartbreak hotel

Oh love me tender - baby don’t be cruel

Return to sender - treat me like a fool

Calling Elvis - is anybody home

Calling Elvis - I'm here all alone

Did he leave the building

Or can he come to the phone

Calling Elvis - I'm here all alone

Why don't you go get him - I'm his biggest fan

You gotta tell him - he's still the man

Long distance baby - so far from home

Don't you think maybe you could put him on

Well tell him I was calling just to wish him well

Let me leave my number - heartbreak hotel

Oh love me tender - baby don’t be cruel

Return to sender - treat me like a fool

Calling Elvis - is anybody home

Calling Elvis - I'm here all alone

Or can he come to the phone

Calling Elvis - I'm here all alone

Seems like Mark Knopfler’s quite a fan cos here’s the lyrics to another song of his ;) Sorry, can't find it on YouTube :(

Back To Tupelo

Around the time of 'clambake'

Movie number twenty-five

You and the lying dutchman

Are still in overdrive

You're as strong as when you started

Mississippi in your soul

You can still be marlon brando

And the king of rock and roll

It isn't just the records

No, you must have hollywood

The songs alone are not enough

That much is understood

You'll soon be back in memphis

Maybe then you'll know what to do

The storylines they're giving you

Are just not ringing true

Back to Tupelo

When you're young and beautiful

Your dreams are all ideals

Later on it's not the same

Lord, everything is real

Sixteen hundred miles of highway

Roll back to the truth

And a song to give your mother

In your first recording booth

Around the time of 'clambake'

That old dream's still rolling on

Sometimes there'll be the feeling

Things are going wrong

The morning star is fading

Lord, the mississippi's cold

You can still be marlon brando

And the king of rock and roll

But it's a ways to go

Back to Tupelo

Real Good Looking Boy by The Who

Written by Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey introduced this song in concert by saying it was about "A man that changed my life at the age of 11. I saw Elvis Presley live at 11. Thank God I did, I loved him because everybody under the age of 20 thought they were Elvis and dressed like him. Everybody over 20 hated them and that was good enough for me."

The music is based on the Elvis song "Can't Help Falling In Love."

Black Velvet - Alannah Myles

Black Velvet

Mississippi in the middle of a dry spell

Jimmy Rogers on the victrola up high

Mama's dancing with baby on her shoulder

The Sun is setting like molasses in the sky.

The boy could sing, knew how to move, everything.

Always wanting more, he'd leave you longing for.

CHORUS:

Black velvet and that little boy smile

Black velvet with that slow southern style

A new religion that'll bring you to your knees

Black velvet if you please.

Up in Memphis the music's like a heat wave

White lightning, bound to drive you wild.

Mama's baby's in the heart of every school girl

"Love me tender" leaves 'em cryin' in the aisle

The way he moved, it was a sin, so sweet and true.

Always wanting more, he'd leave you longing for.

CHORUS:

Black velvet and that little boy smile

Black velvet with that slow southern style

A new religion that'll bring you to your knees

Black velvet if you please.

Every word of every song that he sang was for you.

In a flash he was gone, it happened so soon,

What could you do?

CHORUS:

Black velvet and that little boy smile

Black velvet with that slow southern style

A new religion that'll bring you to your knees

Black velvet if you please.

Black velvet and that little boy smile

Black velvet with that slow southern style

A new religion that'll bring you to your knees

Black velvet if you please.

...If you please

If you please

Here's a couple of beautiful songs - tributes to Elvis

Cry Like Memphis

George Michael - John and Elvis Are Dead

Behind The Who during "Real Good Looking Boy" images of Elvis were projected on a giant screen that was constantly incorporated into the performance.
