Posted March 29, 200718 yr The Palestinian Authority's broadcaster, PBC, has applied for membership in the EBU and started negotiations on their way to a possible performance in the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest. The 2007 contest will be broadcasted in the Palestinian Authority which will send its commentator to Helsinki. PBC arranged a press conference this morning in the city of Ramallah. During the event, it was formally announced that the Palestinians have applied to the EBU to become members of the union and to eventually participate in the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest. A discussion in this matter is expected to be held within the EBU during April. PBC representative said to the Israeli news website Ynet.co.il they are aware of the legal difficulties this request may raise, since the Palestinian Authority is not an actual state, not yet even by their own proclamation. Due to EBU's regulations, which stipulate that only acknowledged states broadcasters are entitled for membership, this issue could be problematic. PBC has already been accepted at EBU as an observing member. This allows PBC to broadcast the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest live from Helsinki, a privilege the broadcaster was happy to claim. For the first time in the history of the contest, there will be an official delegation of the Palestinian Authority in the contest including a commentator who will broadcast the contest to the viewers in the Palestinians territories. Spokeswoman of the Eurovision project within PBC told Ynet.co.il that the problems which surrounded the Lebanese attempt to participate in 2006 will not be repeated by the Palestinians, who will broadcast the performance of the Israeli entry: "We are aware of all the contest's regulations. If our request to be accepted as members will be approved, we will comply with all the regulations. This process is far more important than its eventual outcome. Even if are rejected, we will be able to show a different face of the Palestinian society". The Palestinian Eurovision campaign is supported and sponsored by the Danish government and the Danish Superplex organisation. Should the Palestinian Authority be allowed to participate in the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest, as PBC announced, a public national final will be held to determine the debut entry. One Issue the EBU will surely need to look into is a possible diversion of the televoting procedure. The Israeli and Palestinian population reside in close proximity to each other, in some places even side by side. A large part of the Palestinian people obtain Israeli celular phones. All this might have an effect on the voting procedure and results. ESC Today
