March 29, 200718 yr Chartbeat from Billboard.com March 29, 2007, Fred Bronson LIAR, LIAR, CHART ON FIRE: In the nearly 49-year history of The Billboard Hot 100, no song has ever jumped 90 places or more -- until this week. Breaking the old record of an 88-place move, "Beautiful Liar" (Columbia) by the powerhouse team of Beyonce and Shakira rockets 91 positions to land at No. 3. Fueled by huge digital sales ("Beautiful Liar" debuts at No. 1 on Hot Digital Songs), the duet bests the 95-7 jump of "Smack That" by Akon featuring Eminem on the Hot 100 dated Oct. 14, 2006. If Akon needed consoling for losing this chart record, he has it. His single "Don't Matter" (Konvict/Upfront/SRC) advances 3-1, giving him his second chart-topper on the Hot 100. "I Wanna Love You" by Akon featuring Snoop Dogg spent two weeks in pole position in December 2006. In its second chart week, "Beautiful Liar" is already the second-biggest hit of Shakira's career, runner-up only to "Hips Don't Lie," No. 1 for two weeks in June 2006. This is Shakira's fourth turn in the top 10. Her Hot 100 chart career started with a No. 6 hit ("Whenever, Wherever" in December 2001) and a No. 9 hit ("Underneath Your Clothes" in September 2002). "Beautiful Liar" is the sixth top three hit in Beyonce's career away from Destiny's Child. Four of those six top hits went to No. 1 ("Crazy in Love," "Baby Boy," "Check On It" and "Irreplaceable"). NO. 3 FOR NUMBER THREE: Melinda, LaKisha, Jordin, Blake, Sanjaya and the other season six "American Idol" contestants will want to take note: another finalist from season five makes an impressive debut on The Billboard 200. Elliott Yamin's self-titled album opens at No. 3, coinciding with his third-place finish on the popular TV series. Yamin is the fourth finalist from season five to have a top three album, following Taylor Hicks, Katharine McPhee and Chris Daughtry, frontman for the band that bears his name. There's one slight difference between Yamin's chart achievement and his fellow contestants: Elliott's CD is the only one released on an independent label (Hickory). That status helps make Elliott's album the 116th No. 1 for the "American Idol" franchise, as the CD debuts on the Top Independent Albums chart in pole position. Meanwhile, the second single from Elliott's album, "Wait for You," bows at No. 67 on the Hot 100. It is one of seven "Idol" singles on the chart, sharing berths with two hits each for Carrie Underwood and Daughtry and one each for Katharine McPhee and Jennifer Hudson. McPhee's song, "Over It" (RCA) breaks into the top 30 for the first time, with a 49-29 move. 'EVERYTHING' HE'S ALWAYS WANTED: Michael Buble has had no problem topping the Adult Contemporary chart or the jazz tallies, but he's never really had a hit on the Hot 100. That situation changes this week as he scores the Hot Shot Debut with "Everything" (143/Reprise), his first single to crack the top half of the chart. Buble made his Hot 100 debut in May 2005 with "Home," which stalled at No. 72. In April 2006, his remake of the Drifters' "Save the Last Dance for Me" could only waltz to No. 99. "Everything" has not dented the Adult Contemporary chart yet, but it does debut on the Pop 100 at No. 47. MY SWEET LORDI: Since the Eurovision Song Contest means nothing to most Americans, very few winners ever see their names on a Billboard chart. The main exception over the last 12 years has been Secret Garden, the new age duo from Norway and Ireland that won the 1995 competition with "Nocturne." Secret Garden has had seven titles debut on Top New Age Albums, including the 2005 release "Earthsongs," which spent six weeks at No. 1. The performer who sang the winning entry for 2005, Greece's Helena Paparizou, found her Eurovision song "My Number One" charting on two dance surveys. Just five weeks before the 2007 competition is held in Helsinki, last year's winners make their first appearance on a Billboard album chart. Lordi's "The Arockalypse" (The End) enters the Heatseekers list at No. 37. The Finnish heavy metal band, sort of a cross between Kiss and the Klingons, is touring the United States, beginning with an April 20 date at the House of Blues in Anaheim, California. They should be home in time to take the Eurovision stage at Hartwell Arena in Helsinki on May 12. 'GONNA BE' A NO. 1 SINGLE AFTER ALL: Twin brothers Charlie and Craig Reid must be smiling this week. Between November 1987 and October 1994 they had nine chart entries on the U.K. singles chart, never going higher than No. 3, the peak position of their first hit, "Letters from America." Even their sole American hit, "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)," which went to No. 3 on the Hot 100, could only make it to No. 11 in Great Britain. This week, they are No. 1 in the United Kingdom with a Comic Relief remake of "I'm Gonna Be," recorded with Peter Kay and "Little Britain" actor Matt Lucas. The original 1988 version of "I'm Gonna Be" has returned to the chart, rising 37-26, giving the Proclaimers the rare feat of charting twice in the same week with the same song. THORN ON OUR SIDE: Those fans who are missing the presence of U.K. duo Everything But The Girl on the charts will be happy to see singer Tracey Thorne make her solo debut on The Billboard 200. "Out of the Woods" (Astralwerks) is a new entry at No. 172. It marks Thorn's first appearance on this chart since her days with Everything But The Girl, last on this tally with "Temperamental," No. 65 in October 1999. 'SEASON' IN THE SUN: While older songs are not eligible to return to the Hot 100 unless they are being promoted as current hits, there is no such rule on Hot Digital Songs. That explains why the Zombies' "Time of the Season," a No. 3 hit on the Hot 100 for the Zombies in 1969, enters the digital survey at No. 67. The Rod Argent-penned tune returns thanks to a performance on the British Invasion segment of "American Idol." Blake Lewis, best known for his beat-boxing, sang "Time of the Season." The Zombies have not appeared on a Billboard list since "Time of the Season" and its parent album "Odessey & Oracle" charted in 1969.
