Nacho Libre appears to have been made exclusively for Jack Black fans. Clearly many critics are not among them. One who is is Carina Chocano of the Los Angeles Times, who writes: "Black is a gifted physical comedian with surprisingly expressive eyes and an even more surprising tender streak." Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (formerly known as High, Wide, and Handsome and "A night at the Talladega") is an American comedy film about NASCAR racing. The film is directed by Adam McKay, who co-wrote the film with actor and former Saturday Night Live cast member Will Ferrell, who stars in the title role. The film is currently in post-production, and is set for release on August 4, 2006. Actors involved in the movie include John C. Reilly, Amy Adams, Sacha Baron Cohen (Da Ali G Show), and Isla Fisher. Synopsis

Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby tells the story of NASCAR stock car racing sensation Ricky Bobby (Will Ferrell) whose "win at all costs" approach has made him a national hero. He and his loyal racing partner and childhood friend Cal Naughton Jr. (John C. Reilly), are a fearless duo—dubbed "Thunder" and "Lightning" by their fans for their ability to finish so many races in the #1 and #2 positions, with Cal always in second place. When a flamboyant French Formula One driver, Jean Girard (Sacha Baron Cohen), challenges the "Thunder" and "Lightning" for the supremacy of NASCAR, Ricky Bobby must face his own demons and fight Girard for the right to be known as racing's top driver.

 

Plot

Ricky Bobby grew up in a broken family in fictional town of West River, North Carolina. His father was an alcoholic and he was raised by his mother. But Ricky has always liked to go fast. One morning while his mother was at the grocery store, Ricky climbed into the drivers seat and, using a wiffle ball bat to press the pedals, took his momma's station wagon on a high-speed joy ride.

 

Ricky Bobby never did outgrow his love of racing, and grows up to become a professional NASCAR driver. Ricky Bobby soars to the top of NASCAR very quickly, achieving both fame and fortune.

 

While on top of the racing world, he is challenged by French Formula One driver Jean Girard. Jean Girard outperforms Ricky Bobby on the track and overtakes Ricky's #1 standing. Ricky, desperate to regain his dominance, pushes himself too hard and ends up in a horrible wreck. With his nerves lost, he retires from NASCAR. His wife, yearning to be married to the top NASCAR driver, marries his best friend and former partner who he refused to let come first in races.

 

Ricky moves back home and takes a job as a pizza delivery driver for Luigi's Pizzeria, which he soon loses after driving his delivery vehicle off of a cliff.

 

With his life at a lowpoint, Ricky's father suddenly reenters his life. With the retraining and guidance of his father, Ricky gains back his confidence and gets back into racing and eventually reclaims his rightful place atop NASCAR.

Talladega Nights, starring Will Farrell, was supposed to open big, box office analysts had predicted, but not this big. The film took in an estimated $47 million, making it the second-biggest opening for an original comedy ever, behind Bruce Almighty, which opened with $68 million in May, 2003. The movie was far ahead of Ferrell's previous biggest opening, Elf, which took in $31 million in November, 2003. As had been forecast, the three other new films had only so-so debuts. Paramount's animated Barnyard had the best of them, placing second with about $16 million. The British horror film The Descent, which drew smashing reviews, did not draw big crowds, taking in only $8.8 million. And The Night Listener, starring Robin Williams in a serious role, barely made the top ten with just $3.6 million. But the biggest disappointment may have been the 62-percent plunge of Miami Vice, which wound up in fourth place with $9.7 million, behind Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, which earned $11 million in its fifth week to bring its total booty to $379.7 million and putting it at No. 8 among the top domestic grossers of all time. It also excelled overseas, where it grossed an additional $57 million, to lift its worldwide total to $772 million

Well I've seen both of these films now, and I would give Talladega Nights 3 stars and Nacho Libre just 2 - Will Ferrell is funny but not THAT funny, anything beats Nacho Libre though -_-

actually thought this was funnier but then i guess my hope were not as high for this than ricky bobby.

 

Ricky Bobby hugely disappointing with David Koechner being underused. Think the best parts mostly being the time when Sasha BC came onscreen, esp the part when you think someone has been wyatting the jukey.

 

and kinda taking of his Boratness, i thought Amy Adams was very Isla Fisher-like which just reminded me that i could be at home watching the wedding crashers dvd again...
