CULTURE BOX: Bohemian singer-songwriters

My favourite singer/songwriter I believe for the last 6 years at least. While her popularity in the Uk has gone down, she's still a force in the USA and I have almost bought her entire single/album collection and have yet to find a song I have not fell in love with  I'd like to see yet another direction change for the new album she'll probably have out in 2007 though, its not like her to stay in the same place for more than 2 albums! Anyone else a supporter of hers?

Only heard a few of her songs tbh, can't remember them that well either so I'll have to get hold of some
Absolutely, she is a real individualistic talent and she can turn her hand to some pretty unusual things. But..er... the less said about her "Rock-Chick" incarnation 'Y Can't Tori Read' the better.......

she is a real individualistic talent

Individual is certainly not one of the words I'd use to describe Kate Bush-lite wannabe Tori I'm afraid. Hideous.

wiki say:

American Doll Posse is an album by singer-songwriter Tori Amos that will be released in the United States on May 1, 2007.

"Big Wheel" was released as the album's first radio single. "Teenage Hustling" and "Bouncing Off Clouds" are being considered for the second single.

Development

During the 2005 summer tour and in several recent interviews while promoting A Piano: The Collection, Amos revealed cryptic details about the upcoming album:

“ Without giving anything away, I have my high heels on. I like the way that feels. â€

Tori has also revealed that the new album is political in nature:

“ The main message of my new album is: the political is personal. This as opposed to the feminist statement from years ago that the personal is political. I know it has been said that it goes both ways, but we have to turn it around. We have to think like that. I’m now taking on subjects that I could not have been able to take on in my twenties. With Little Earthquakes I took on more personal things. But if you are going to be an American woman in 2007 with a real view on what is going on, you need to be brave, and you need to know that some people won’t want to look at it. â€

Amos has also considered the return of the harpsichord and Wurlitzer on this record. She has made several comments about bringing a "warrior woman" out, as well as stating that the record will be a very different chapter from what has come before.

The album, like all Tori Amos albums since her 1998 album From the Choirgirl Hotel, has been recorded at Martian Engineering in Cornwall.

[edit] The Doll Posse

The American Doll Posse of the title consists of five different female characters that Amos "developed around the album's 20 tracks," according to US Weekly. The characters represent different aspects of Tori's own personality:

“ What I'm trying to tell other women is they have their own version of the compartmentalised feminine which may have been repressed in each one of them. For many years I have been an image; that isn’t necessarily who I am completely. I have made certain choices and that doesn’t mean that those choices are the whole story. I think these women are showing me that I have not explored honest extensions of the self who are now as real as the redhead. â€

On her next tour to promote the album, Tori will open each show dressed as a different character.

Isabel

Isabel (HisTORIcal) is based upon the Greek mythological goddess Artemis and is the voice of the tracks "Yo George" and "Dark Side Of The Sun", amongst others [14]. She is a photographer and is the most outwardly political.

Clyde

Clyde (CliTORIdes) is based upon the Greek mythological goddess Persephone and is the voice of the tracks "Bouncing On Clounds", "Girl Disappearing" and "Roosterspur Bridge", amongst others [15]. She is emotional and idealistic.

Pip

Pip (ExpiraTORIal) is based upon the Greek mythological goddess Athena and is the voice of the tracks "Teenage Hustling" and "Body & Soul", amongst others [16]. She is a "warrior woman" and is confrontational.

Santa

Santa (SanaTORIum) is based upon the Greek mythological goddess Aphrodite and is the voice of the tracks "Secret Spell", "You Can Bring Your Dog" and "Programmable Soda", amongst others [17]. She is sensual and passionate.

Tori

Tori (TerraTORIes) is based upon the Greek mythological gods Demeter and Dionysus and is the voice of the tracks "Big Wheel" and "Digital Ghost", amongst others [18]. She appears to be a caricature of the artist herself, with promotional images released depicting the character holding sage (a reference to 2002's Scarlet's Walk) and with a Bible in one hand and the word 'shame' scrawled across the other, both references to Amos' recurring theme of religion and the patriarchy in her work. On the cover of this record, Tori is portraited holding a chicken/rooster - hinted pun to her previous work Boys for Pele, in which the song "Professional Widow" has the lyrics "give me peace, love and a hard c**k", and also to the song Blood Roses "when chickens get a taste of your meat" (referece to Alice Walker's book Possessing the Secret of Joy, in which girls were circumcized, and their meat thrown to the chickens to eat). Some confusion was caused by a rumor spread over the web that the Japanese word for chicken was "tori," but this word simply means bird. The Japanese word for chicken is niwatori, which literally means "yard (garden) bird".

Posse Blogs

As part of the marketing campaign, a series of blogs written by each character are circulating on the Internet on various websites, with fans invited to "hunt" the blogs down [19].

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

While it has not been confirmed by an official source, it is believed that the blog for the character of Santa is on MySpace . It has been noted that the profile in question is the second friend on Tori's official Top 8 friends list. A number of blogs which appear to have been written by the characters Clyde , Tori , Isabel and Pip have also been discovered. However, neither of these blogs have been confirmed as official. Fan website Undented has reported that the Pip blog is not authentic.

Spoilers end here.
