April 1, 200718 yr Chart Commentary (thanks to Gavin Ryan) Silverchair's "Straight Lines" is at No.1 for it's third week, and in staying atop for another week, it now becomes their second longest running No.1 single. "Freak" was at the top for two weeks, so by "Straight Lines" keeping hold for a three week stint at the top of the Australian Charts, it inadvertently becomes their second behind the 6-week running debut single "Tomorrow". I don't know whether it will be able to hold on for a fourth week, as their fifth studio album was officially released this weekend (March 30th), and with it coming out in two editions, one with a bonus DVD, it will most likely have fans buying the album and not the single, which could mean it might drop next week. And as "The Sweetest Thing" by Gwen Stefani is No.1 in the Physical Singles sales chart this week, it could finally break it's six week's at No.2 next week, we'll just have to wait and see. At No.3 this week is "Grace Kelly" by Mika, now climbing to it's highest position, and right behind at No.4 is Fall Out Boy who climb back to their original peak position for a now fourth non-consecutive week at No.4. With Mika doing a No.3-3wks-HP3, and Fall Out Boy doing a No.4-4wks at HP-HP4, there is also another triple number this week. No.6 is by Akon with "I Wanna Love You", and it's that song's 6th week in the charts, and so he has a No.6-6wks-HP6 triple listing. It's a very slow chart this week, due probably to the lack of new releases. No.10 through to No.16 is all stable this week, and the biggest climber within the Top 50 this week is No.20 with "Cupid's Chokehold" by The Gym Class Heroes. There are only two entries to the Top 50 this week, one a re-entry, the one a rare new entry. Firstly the re-entry which is from former Australian Idol contestant James Kannis. The song "Love 2 Love" originally hit No.35 in the first week of December 2006, and this week re-enters the charts at that same position, and this is due mostly to his appearance in Sydney last weekend at the 25th Annual Greek Festival. Another Sydney influenced single is the new entry at No.37 this week. "Here We Go" is performed by The Christian City Church-Oxford Falls, a church based in the North Eastern Suburbs of Sydney. This song is released in anticipation of the forthcoming April 2007 "Presence Conference" that the Church is having, where they will be recording a new Live DVD of that concert. A new No.1 album in Australia this week, and it's also the birthday (April 1st) of the performer John Butler from the John Butler Trio. This is the second Australian No.1 album for the Perth group, who were last at the top of the charts back in March (2 weeks) and July 2004 (1 week) with "Sunrise Over the Sea". This is the fourth No.1 album for 2007, and it's also the fourth by a group of men, and fourth by a rock group, plus it's also the first Australian Group performed album of the year to top the charts. Other stats for the album include it being the 545th No.1 album in Australia since January 1965, the 123rd Australian Performed No.1, and the 260th performed by a Group. It's also the first time that the word "Grand" has appeared in a No.1 album title, but the second with "National", the other being Powderfinger's "Internationalist" from September 1998. Elton John had his 60th birthday this week, and also performed his 60th Sold-Out show at Radio City Music Hall in New York. To coincide with these events, a new Best of has been released called "Rocket Man: The Definitive Hits" and this week debuts at No.11. Also this week in 1974 his album "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" was spending it's third week at the top of the charts. New at No.23 is "Pubs, Trucks and Plains" by the late-great Slim Dusty. April the 1st is the 50th Anniversary of the recording of Slim's first No.1 single "A Pub With No Beer" back in April 1957, and this 3CD 60 Song set of Slim's tracks is to commemorate this occasion. Next week Silverchair's new album is expected to debut at No.1, and if it does some new chart records will be broken, that have held for the past five years, so I will fill you all in next week if and when this happens.
