i never understood why this guy was so popular, his music didnt really fit into any genre (which in the early-mid 70's polarised musical society was pretty much essential) and i found him just... blurgh!

ok, anybody who releases 60 odd tracks must do a few decent ones, possibly 'candle in the wind' was his best but that was ruined forever by re-writing it for diana!

anybody?

I think he is a brilliant musician, songwriter and performer myself. And I also find Candle in the mind one of his worst, he has dozens of far supeior tracks imo. 'Your Song' in particular is such a classic. ^_^

"Im still standing, yeah yeah yeah"

The only think I can really only stand by Elton. My mum loves Candle In The Wind, but that dire Ready For Love :puke2: One of the worst things I've heard. -_-

Have to agree with Scotty that he is a great performer and he and Bernie Taupin have written some really good songs :D Can't say I was bothered with Candle In The Wind, especially the re-written one though <_<
i liked a lot of his early stuff, like Benny and the jets, rocket man, your song not too bothered with his post 1980 stuff
His 1970-1975 songs were his best. I love Philadelphia Freedom, b**ch is Back,Daniel,Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,Your Song,Saturday Nights Alright for fighting,Island Girl & Dont let the sun go down .

As with many, his early material was strong...and he came to prominence in a time when pop wasn't so disposable.

Just about everything he's done since the mid-70s is a pile of poo though...that said, I loved 'Passengers' and have a bizarre liking of 'Sacrifice'...really don't understand why.

I agree, he's a great musician with a vast array of classic songs.

thats not actually true m8, the early 70's glam scene was very disposable, gone were the heady days of the 60's when many acts were really trying to make intelligent meaningful and ultimately influencial pop, the early 70's glam scene was about having fun... good or not depends upon ones personal taste, but 'party pop' has always been disposable.

i never understood why this guy was so popular,

lots of radio play i would say.
