April 8, 200718 yr Chartifacts (thanks to Gavin Ryan) Silverchair retain the No.1 spot in Australia for a fourth 'straight' week with their third No.1 single "Straight Lines". But they are also joined at the top of the charts by their fifth studio album, but more on that further down in the albums section. Mika climbs to No.2 this week with his debut Australian single "Grace Kelly", thus knocking off Gwen Stefani from that position which she has occupied for the past six weeks, and thus she tumbles down to No.4 this week. In between at No.3 is the highest of three new entries this week, "Girlfriend" by Avril Lavigne. It's debuted at No.1 on the Physical Singles Sales chart, but is only No.7 on the Download Charts, so can't quite claim the top position. It is currently No.5 in the U.S. and has been at No.2 in the U.K. for the past two weeks, and is the lead single from her third album "The Best Damn Thing" which is out in Australia April 14th. For a third week, "The Others" by TV Rock is at No.15, but other acts who hit new peak positions this week include Candice Alley (No.16) with "Before You Go", The Gym Class Heroes with "Cupid's Chokehold" (No.18) and in the Top 10 "Suddenly I See" by KT Tunstall (No.6) and "20 Good Reasons" by Thirsty Merc (No.8). The second new entry is a song that has climbed 95-63-40 over it's three weeks in the Top 100, thus breaking into the Top 50 this week it's recent visitor to our shores, Scotland's Paolo Nutini with "Jenny Don't Be Hasty". He first made the charts last October when he hit No.67 with the song "Last Request", and these two tracks are taken from his debut album "These Streets" which is at No.43 this week. Paolo might not seem like a typical Scottish name, but his father is Italian whilst his mother is Scottish. Third debut this week comes in at No.42, "Come Back to Me" by Vanessa Hudgens. She is better known as 'Gabrielle' from the High School Musical Movie, of which the Soundtrack hit No.1 last July and August. She also has her debut album "V" out now. This very week in 2002 (April 8th), Silverchair debuted at No.1 with their fourth straight No.1 debut and No.1 album in the form of "Diorama". At that time Silverchair became equal leaders along with Cold Chisel and Midnight Oil as the only Australian GROUPS to have had FOUR No.1 albums. Now the exact same week four years later that record gets broken, along with a new record being created. Silverchair become the first Australian GROUP to have had five No.1 albums, and also are the ONLY ACT EVER (local or overseas) IN AUSTRALIAN CHART HISTORY TO HAVE THEIR FIRST FIVE STUDIO ALBUMS DEBUT AT No.1. Whilst Jimmy Barnes has had eight No.1 albums, his first album didn't debut at the top, it climbed to No.1, so thus Silverchair are the first to achieve this feat. It's been exactly 12 years since Silverchair debuted at the top of the charts with their first album "Frogstomp", and listed below is the figures for their No.1 albums... 9-April-1995 - 3wks - Frogstomp 16-Feb-1997 - 1wk - Freakshow 15-Mar-1999 - 1wk - Neon Ballroom 8-Apr-2002 - 1wk - Diorama 9-Apr-2007 - 1wk so far - Young Modern Some other stats for this album: This is the 546th No.1 album in Australia, it's the first time the word 'Young' has appeared in a No.1 album, but only the second time the word 'Modern' has been at the top. The last time was only in September 2006 when Bob Dylan's "Modern Times" topped the charts. It's the first time since August 2006 that an Australian Group has knocked off another Australian Group from the top of the charts, last time it was Something for Kate who knocked off Eskimo Joe from the top spot, and this album is the 124th Australian Performed No.1 album. Every new No.1 album this year has been by a GROUP, and with "Young Modern" debuting at the top it makes it five Group Performed No.1 albums in a row. This has only happened once before this decade, back between May and June 2005, but there was an instance in 2000 when six groups had back-to-back No.1 albums, so if we get another group at the No.1 position, it will tie that record. In a rather strange irony, debuting at No.2 is a tribute album to Cold Chisel, "Standing on the Outside Looking in: The Songs of Cold Chisel". It's a compilation album of Australian groups performing Cold Chisel songs, as well as featuring the original Chisel versions. As I've listed the chart toppers for The 'Chair, here are the four No.1 albums for The 'Chisels: "Swingshift" (April 1981, 2wks), "Circus Animals" (May 1982, 1 week), "20th Century" (April 1984, 1 week) and "Last Wave of Summer" (October 1998, 1 week). With John Butler Trio falling from No.1 to No.3, it gives us an Australian Top 3 albums this week. This hasn't happened since April 25th, 2005 when the Top 3 consisted of the No.1 debut by The Cat Empire with Two Shoes, 2-The Sound of White by Missy Higgins and 3-Anthony Callea with his self-titled debut album. Kings of Leon debut at No.4 with their second album "Because of the Times". They first hit our charts in November 2004 with the No.31 album "Aha Shake Heartbreak". Coming in at No.14 is the highest ever charting album for Machine Head. "The Blackening" is their fourth Top 50 album in Australia, having previously charted with "The More Things Change..." (1997), "The Burning Red" (1999) and "Supercharger" in 2001. Also the fourth album for Hilary Duff debuts at No.17 this week called "Dignity". It features the current No.22 single "With Love", and is the follow-up to the previous albums "Metamorphosis" (2003), "Hilary Duff" (2004) and "Most Wanted" (2005).
