possibly one of our greatest overlooked pop groups. i rated the small faces very highly, although known nowdays for 'itchycoo park' i prefer 'all or nothing', 'tin soldier', 'lazy sunday' and 'watcha gonna do about it'... fronted by the late, great steve marriot . whilst the beatles, who and kinks are recognised by britpop artists as influencial, i think the small faces were just as important. 'lazy sunday' is as gooda original britpop as anything ray davies wrote..

humble pie formed when the small faces split, being joined by peter frampton from the herd, became largely an album band but had 1 hit 'natural born bugie'..

the faces formed out of the remnants and were joined by 60' blues singer rod stewart and produced possibly the best pop of the early 70's, largely ignoring the glam scene and the disposable pop they were truer to their blues roots. with or without the gbhs credits with rod , their hits included 'you wear it well','maggie may', 'stay with me', 'cindy incidentaly'..

thoughts?

Don't think I've heard that many by them to be honest, love 'Lazy sunday' and 'Itchycoo park' tho, other than those two doubt I could name another one.

By the way got bored after the first paragraph so I don't really know what this all about.

Oh dear I got Trojan...bast*rd...

I much preferred the Small Faces to The Faces as I prefer Steve Marriott's vocals to Rod Stewart.

They were to the 1960s British Beat scene what Supergrass were to the 1990s BritPop movement.

All Or Nothing (1966 UK#1)

Itchycoo Park (1967 UK#2)

Tin Soldier (1967 UK#9)

Lazy Sunday (1968 UK#2)

My favourite track of their's was The Autumn Stone.

I'd recommend buying this album:

Small Faces - Ultimate Collection

(A 2CD 50 track anthology containing all their hit singles & key album tracks split evenly between their time on Decca & on Immediate record labels)

Also does anyone remember Ronnie Lane's How Come = a great single?

I'm a huge fan of the Small faces, loved all the songs mentioned, reminds me of hot summer days, especially Lazy Sunday Afternoon,Itchycoo park.

yes I remember that song, I liked it at the time. Did Ronnie Lane not end up in a wheelchair?

ronnie lane joined steve marriot a few years ago, he got ms... pity..

i prefer ronnie lanes 'the poacher'... excellant track :)

The trouble with The Ultimate Collection is that it's split equally between the Decca and Immediate stuff and there's heaps better Immediate stuff than Decca so the collection is lopsided. Best comp for the Immediate stuff is 'The Darlings of Wapping Wharf Launderette' then pick up ANY Decca/London comp.

i suppose thats to do with the latest sync deal for that song for M&S. Suppose there are worse songs to use (the feeling or Bryan Adams i guess    ).

btw has anyone heard the M people versh of the song? is it like really bad? as bad as i can imagine? (my mum likes them but i doubt its worth digging thru her cds to find it)

i can assure you that its every bit as bad as you could imagine.... heather smalls voice is deffo marmite... love it or hate it... i HATE it.

A bit of trivia ....

The Faces hold the record for the longest song title with "You Can Make Me Dance Sing Or Anything (Even Take The Dog For A Walk, Mend A Fuse, Fold Away The Ironing Board, Or Any Other Domestic Shortcomings".

Cindy Incidentally, Pool Hall Richard & Stay With Me were fantastic tunes by The Faces.
