April 12, 200718 yr Chartbeat from Billboard.com April 12, 2007, Fred Bronson 'GIVE' UP: After spending eight weeks in the lower regions of The Billboard Hot 100, "Give It to Me" (Mosley/Blackground) by Timbaland featuring Nelly Furtado & Justin Timberlake breaks into the top 40 - by rocketing 42-1. The sudden availability of a digital download for sale is responsible for the jet-powered leap to the top, only the second in Hot 100 history from below No. 40. The biggest jump to No. 1 in the almost 49-year existence of the Hot 100 is the 52-1 surge of Kelly Clarkson's "A Moment Like This" the week of Oct. 5, 2002. Timbaland's dramatic advance revises the list of the top five biggest leaps to No. 1. They are: 52-1 "A Moment Like This," Kelly Clarkson (Oct. 5, 2002) 42-1 "Give It to Me," Timbaland featuring Nelly Furtado & Justin Timberlake (April 21, 2007) 34-1 "SOS," Rihanna (May 13, 2006) 32-1 "This Is Why I'm Hot," Mims (March 10, 2007) 31-1 "SexyBack," Justin Timberlake (Sept. 9, 2006) That means Timberlake has two of the top five leaps to No. 1 of all time. "Give It to Me" is Timberlake's fourth consecutive No. 1, following "SexyBack," "My Love" and "What Goes Around...Comes Around." Timberlake is the first artist to have four consecutive No. 1s on the Hot 100 since Usher scored with "Yeah!", "Burn," "Confessions Part II" and "My Boo" in 2004. "Give It to Me" is the third No. 1 for Furtado, following "Promiscuous" and "Say It Right." It is the second No. 1 for Timbaland, after "Promiscuous," but his first as a lead artist. Prior to "Giver It to Me," Timbaland had four chart entries as a lead artist: "Up Jumps the Boogie," No. 12 (1997) [Magoo and Timbaland] "Clock Strikes," No. 37 (1998) [Timbaland and Magoo] "Here We Come," No. 92 (1998) [Timbaland featuring Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott & Magoo] "Cop That Sh#!," No. 95 (2003) [Timbaland & Magoo featuring Missy Elliott] Timbaland not only moves into the penthouse this week, he has two more tracks debut on the Hot 100. "Release," which also features Timberlake, is new at No. 91 and "Apologize," which features One Republic, opens at No. 95. "Give It To Me" is Timbaland's seventh chart-topper as a producer and songwriter. His first was Aaliyah's "Try Again" in June 2000. His other No. 1s have all achieved pole position in the last 12 months: "Promiscuous" by Furtado, "SexyBack" by Timberlake, "My Love" by Timberlake, "Say It Right" by Furtado and "What Goes Around...Comes Around" by Timberlake. This is Timbaland's 20th week at No. 1 as a producer and songwriter. One surprising fact about "Give It to Me" is how long it has been since the No. 1 song on the Hot 100 was credited to two men and one woman. You'd have to go back 17 years and two months to find this configuration at the chart zenith. In February 1990, "Opposites Attract" went to No. 1, recorded by Paula Abdul with the Wild Pair. Finally, with "Give It to Me" deposing Akon's "Don't Matter" after two weeks, no song has remained in the penthouse longer than two weeks in 2007. Since the Hot 100 has been compiled with Nielsen SoundScan and Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems information, no year has had such a rapid turnover at the top. The last year to have as many songs remain No. 1 for two weeks or less was 1991. The first 15 chart-toppers of that year all spent either one or two weeks at the summit. The streak was broken in the summer when Abdul's "Rush, Rush" was at the head of he class for five weeks. PARK AND SEVENTH: Linkin Park has its highest-debuting title on the Hot 100. "What I've Done" (Machine Shop/Warner Bros.) enters at a lofty No. 7, besting the No. 47 entrance of "Somewhere I Belong" in March 2003. In its first week, "What I've Done" is already the group's second highest-charting single. "In the End" peaked at No. 2 in March 2002. By entering at No. 7, "What I've Done" is the Hot 100's third-highest debut of 2007. Fall Out Boy bowed at No. 2 in February with "This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race" and Avril Lavigne entered at No. 5 in March with "Girlfriend." In this millennium, 11 songs have debuted at No. 7 or higher. Eight of those 11 have been by "American Idol" finalists - all except the Fall Out Boy, Lavigne and Linkin Park songs. On Modern Rock Tracks, "What I've Done" rewrites chart history by debuting at No. 1. It is only the third song in this tally's 19-year existence to begin its chart life at No. 1. The other two were R.E.M.'s "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?" the week of Sept. 24, 1994 and Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Dani California" the week of April 22, 2006, exactly one year ago. What else do these three singles all have in common? They were all released on the Warner Bros. label. 'WASTED' ON THE WAY: A 2-1 move on Hot Country Songs makes "Wasted" (Arista) the third Carrie Underwood song to reach the apex. "Jesus, Take the Wheel," "Before He Cheats" and "Wasted" are all from Underwood's debut album, "Some Hearts." As mentioned in Chart Beat a couple of weeks ago, that makes Underwood the first artist since the Dixie Chicks to pull three No. 1 songs from a debut album. In 1998-99, "There's Your Trouble," "Wide Open Spaces" and "You Were Mine" were the three No. 1 hits from the CD "Wide Open Spaces." Underwood will have to score one more No. 1 from "Some Hearts" to equal the four chart-toppers Brooks & Dunn pulled from their debut album. "Brand New Man," "My Next Broken Heart," "Neon Moon" and "Boot Scootin' Boogie" all reached pole position in 1991-92; all were from the album, "Brand New Man." And for those counting, "Wasted" is the 119th No. 1 for the "American Idol" franchise.
