Released on Dome Records, it received wide critical acclaim by the urban media in Britain with Echoes Magazine labelling it "the best British soul album ever" and Billboard Magazine stating "this lady is on her way to becoming an international star".[1] The album was also named Album of the Year by Blues & Soul in 1996 and the project helped Knight win R&B Act of the Year at the 1996 Black Music Awards in London. However, the commercial success of the album did not match its critical acclaim, peaking at #145 on the UK albums chart. In total, six singles were released from the album (including two releases of "Flavour of the Old School" and a limited edition international release of "Cast all your Cares"). The album was the only LP released by Knight on Dome Records. After creative differences with the label, Beverley decided to leave and sign a new contract with Parlophone Records in 1997. To capitalise on Knight's increased success at the label, Dome have subsequently re-released The B-Funk several times - the first being in 1999 after Knight won two big awards at the MOBO Awards, and then again in 2006 after the top 10 success of her hits collection, Voice - The Best of Beverley Knight. On both occasions, the album was re-released with bonus remixes of the singles. April 13, 200718 yr Author Prodigal Sista http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/f/f0/ProdSistacover.JPG/200px-ProdSistacover.JPG Released in August 1998, Prodigal Sista was the first album Knight released under her new contract with Parlophone Records, with whom she had signed a four album deal with in 1997 after leaving her previous label, Dome Records. The lyrics on the album were written entirely by Knight (with the exception of "Sista Sista" which was co-written with Hawk Wolinski), as was the creation of melodies and vocal arrangements. The success of the album proved to be much greater than her debut, The B-Funk, which peaked at #145 in Britain. Prodigal Sista peaked at #42 and was awarded a Gold Disk by the BPI for sales of over 100,000 in Britain[1]. The critical acclaim of the album proved to be widespread, with indie magazine Q calling the album "a triumph not only of Knight’s musical vision but also of the strength in her character" and The Times remarking "Prodigal Sista is a joy to hear – her vocal and intricate self devised and performed harmonies can make you catch your breath in wonderment". The success of the album was solidified at the 1999 MOBO Awards in London where it beat off competition from Fanmail (TLC) and The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (Lauryn Hill) to be named Best Album. Knight also went on to be named Best R&B Act for the second year in a row. April 13, 200718 yr Author http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/c/c6/Musiccitysoul.jpg/200px-Musiccitysoul.jpg The majority of Music City Soul was recorded at The Beech House studio in Nashville, Tennessee in the United States in just five days in late October 2006. All the songs on the album were written before hand the previous summer and then recorded back to back in the studio with an array of different musicians. The intention was to create an organic sound reminiscent of classic 1960s soul albums that epitomised releases by such artists as Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke and Al Green – all of whom had a big impact upon shaping the artistry Knight thought out her childhood. The album was entitled Music City Soul to reflect the fact that Knight has returned to her soul and gospel roots. It was also intended to pay homage to Nashville, the city it was recorded in, which is often referred to as 'The Music City' due to its rich musical heritage. The album will be proceeded by the single on 30 April 2007 "No Man's Land" co-written with, and produced by, Eg White and Jimmy Hogarth. Tracklisting 1.
