Chartifacts

(thanks to Gavin Ryan)

For the past 12 weeks, a three different Rock Groups have remained at the

top of the Australian charts, Evermore's "Light Surrounding You" (1 week), "Lips

of an Angel" by Hinder (7 weeks) and then Silverchairs "Straight Lines" (4

weeks). Now this week the second female to top the charts during this calendar

year hits the top of the Australian Charts. Beyonce was at No.1 from the last

week of December 2006 through until mid-February, now this week Avril Lavigne

score's her second Australian No.1 single with her latest track "Girlfriend".

Her first foray to the top of the charts was for six weeks back in

August-September 2002 with her debut single "Complicated", and now her eighth

Top 50 single in Australia becomes her second chart-topper.

In doing so, "Girlfriend" becomes the 921st No.1 song in Australia, and the

18th by a Canadian performer. In fact the last Canadian to top our charts was

Avril with the aforementioned "Complicated" single, and she is one of 11

Canadians to do so. In fact she moves into equal third place on the list of

Canadian-chart-toppers, which includes Bryan Adams (4 No.1's), Celine Dion (3

No.1's) and now tied in third The Irish Rovers and Avril Lavigne (2 No.1's

each). The other 7 acts from Canada are Guy Lombardo, The Crew Cuts, Paul Anka,

Terry Jacks, Snow, Jann Arden and Shania Twain.

"Girlfriend" becomes the fourth Australian No.1 to contain the word

'Friend', the others being "A Friend of Yours", Bing Crosby (1946), "That's What

Friends are For", Dionne Warwick & Friends (1986) and "Amigos Para Siempre

(Friends for Life)", Sarah Brightman and Jose Carreras (1992). But 'Girl' has

now been to the top on 14 times, the last of which was Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback

Girl" in May 2005 for a single week. The others were "Barbie Girl" (1997), "Big

Girl's Don't Cry" (1963), "Georgy Girl" (1967), "Girls Just Want to Have Fun"

(1984), "Jessie's Girl" (1981), "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" (1994),

"Most Girls" (2000), "Mull of Kintyre/Girl's School" (1977), "Nasty Girl"

(Nitty-2005), "Part 3 into Paper Walls/The Girl That I Love" (1969), "Some

Girls" (1979) and "Uptown Girl" (1983). The actual word "Girlfriend" has never

been to No.1 before though, and Avril's new album "The Best Damn Thing" is out

this week.

There are five new entries to the Top 50 this week, the highest coming in at

No.6 for Christina Aguilera, "Candyman". This is the third single from her "Back

to Basics" album (No.41 this week). The previous two singles were "Ain't No

Other Man" (No.6, July 2006) and "Hurt" (No.9, November 2006). She is also

currently on the charts as part of the duet with P.Diddy on the single "Tell Me"

(No.30 this week).

The other Top 10 debut is also the third Top 10 single from a current album,

that being "The Duchess" for Fergie. "Glamorous" debuts at No.10, and is a

former No.1 single in the U.S. (March 2007). It's the follow-up to the No.3

single "London Bridge" (Sept 2006) and the current No.31 single "Fergalicious"

(No.4, Jan 2007).

Timbaland jumped from No.42 to No.1 in the U.S. Charts this week, and this

week his debut solo single enters the Australian charts at No.16. "Give it to

Me" features guest vocal from two artists who have recently charted with

Timbaland as guest vocalists on their tracks. Justin Timberlake had Timbaland on

his No.1 single "Sexyback", and Nelly Furtado had him accompany on her

"Promiscuous" single, now they return the favor and help into the charts this

week. He is also currently charting as guest vocalist on this week's No.25

single from The Pussycat Dolls, "Wait a Minute", and this debuting track is

taken from his current album "Shock Value" (No.28 this week).

Nelly Furtado also has another song debuting this week, at No.20 is the

fourth single from her Top 5 album "Loose" (No.9 this week), "All Good Things

(Come to an End)". The three previous singles from her album all reached the Top

3, "Promiscuous" (No.2, July 2006), "Maneater" (No.3, November 2006) and the

current No.21 single "Say it Right" (No.2, February 2007).

And current tourists to Australia the Red Hot Chili Peppers score a fourth

single from their former No.1 album "Stadium Arcadium" in the form of "Hump de

Bump" which enters the charts at No.23. It helps push the album back up the

charts (as does the massive tour) to No.12 this week, along with their "Greatest

Hits" collection to No.40.

Silverchair's "Young Modern" stays at the top of the Australian charts for a

second week, and in doing so becomes their second longest running No.1 album. It

wasn't hard for the album to achieve this, as their three previous chart-topping

albums all stayed at the top for a single week, and only their 1995 debut album

had stayed longer, with 3 weeks at the top. So if "Young Modern" can stay atop

of the charts for another one or two more weeks, it'll either tie or eclipse

their debut album.

With Nelly Furtado's album "Loose" being repackaged this past week with a

bonus CD, and the fourth single off the album hitting the charts, it helps push

the album back into the Top 10. But the biggest climber of the week is Naolo

Putini's long overlooked debut album "These Streets" which jumps up the charts

from No.43 to No.16.

The highest debuting album comes in at No.26, "Cannibal" by Static X. This

is their highest placed album in Australia, the fifth in their 13 year career.

The previous best selling being the 1999 album "Wisconsin Death Trip", the

others being 2001's "Machine", "Shadow Zone" (2003), "Beneath, Between, Beyond"

(2004) and 2005's "Start a War".

Also debuting within the Top 50 is the debut album for current Top 10

Singles performer KT Tunstall ("Suddenly I See", No.8 this week), "Eye to the

Telescope" at No.43.
