"The Chain"

A Retro Connection Thread

Taking "inspiration" from Mark Radcliffe & Stuart Maconie's new show on Radio 2, I think it is worth trying this out on BuzzJack.

All you have to do is follow one song in the thread with another by some connection with either the song or the artist. The connection can be as obvious (same song title, or cover of song by the same artist) or as personal and spurious as you like.

However there are some basic rules:

1. No Song included can be after 1996.

2. No two consecutive songs are by the same Artist, although you could as an example follow a Smiths track with a Morrissey track.

3. You need to briefly explain the connection between one track and the next.

4. It's up to you whether you want to include a video or not with the track.

I'll do the first example:

Therefore starting off with:

Fleetwood Mac was a group containing (at the time) two long term relationships (John & Christine McVie & Lindsay Buckingham with Stevie Nicks which imploded during their time in the group), also the track was from 1977's Rumours album.

Another act featuring two married couples was Abba who in 1977 had a UK#1 hit with.....

Abba - Knowing Me Knowing You

Who will carry on this Retro Connection Game Thread?

Ace of Base..................................."All that she wants" from 1993

A duo from Sweden the same country as Abba.

'Everything She Wants' was the flip to Wham's 'Last Christmas'.

'Last Christmas' was ripped off in 2005 by Sugababes for 'Push The Button'.

'Push The Button' was an album by Chemical Brothers which lets you move on to...

'Leave Home' by the Chemical Brothers from back when they were good...i.e. before 1996, just like the rules state :D

.... The Chemical Brothers have featured a variety of different guest vocalists on their tracks including New Order's Bernard Sumner on Out Of Control.

New Order was the band's second incarnation, originally they featured Ian Curtis and were known as Joy Division...

... which leads us to

Joy Division - Atmosphere

Atmosphere was directed by the great director Anton Corbijn, while another great video director with a link to New Order is Johan Renck also known as Stakka Bo (or Mr Stakkybomanofswedenfame to give him the full title)

this is his jazz-funk epic down the drain!!!!

Stakka Bo - Down The Drain

'Everything She Wants' was the flip to Wham's 'Last Christmas'.

Meh - I suppose you're right - you still had to flip the ye olde 7" though!

Ok, obvious one...

Bernard Cribbins also had a hit with 'Right Said Fred' which provided a name for 1991's most tawdry pop act. Right Said Fred's best song is 'Don't Talk Just Kiss'...so, that one.

(I would post a Youtube vid, but my work doesn't allow them)

THE KLF

So, let's have The KLF with 'What Time is Love'

  • Author

The KLF also released a brilliant take on the Dr Who theme as The Timelords - Doctorin The Tardis. Whilst their follow up single was "Kylie Said To Jason".

So let's have a track by the Australian singer who is due to star in the Xmas 2007 Dr Who Special.....

Kylie Minogue - What Do I Have To Do

Kylie Minogue is Australian and so is Michael Hutchence who she dated so how about a song from Inxs

Need You Tonight

INXS - Need You Tonight was taken from the "Kick" album produced by the legendary Chris Thomas.

Chris Thomas got his break in the music industry by being hired by George Martin as a sound engineer/mixer at Air Studios.

The first album he worked on was The Beatles "White Album" which featured....

The Beatles - Helter Skelter

A helter skelter is a fairground attraction. So how about a song by a band with the same name.

Fairground Attraction and " Perfect"

Fairground was the first and only No.1 for Simply Red in 1995, which just about makes it retro.
