Why I Rock: Brian Littrell

When you're part of a group that's sold 90 million albums, it's a little tough to make the 100,000 units you've moved as a solo act look impressive — until it's pointed out that those sales all come from a debut record sold strictly within contemporary Christian music's comparably modest market and accompanied by a handful of international tours. Know how many brand-new Christian artists are touring Japan? Not many.

Inheriting a built-in audience the size of Kansas is just one of countless perks associated with being a card-carrying member of the biggest boy band in history. Case in point: Brian Littrell, who last year released Welcome Home, the gospel album he'd anticipated his entire life, while his ''other'' project, The Backstreet Boys, took a temporarily leave.

From his home in Atlanta, Brian brings us up to speed on what's up with the Boys and his decision to go solo.

ATR: So what have you been up to lately?

BL: Life has mostly been Backstreet Boys-related over the past couple of months. We're one song away from a brand-new record, with 20 songs in the can. It's so new that we don't even have a title yet. The first single should be out sometime before summer.

ATR: Have the relationship dynamics within Backstreet changed as the group's popularity has faded over time?

BL: We've been at this for 14 years, and a lot has changed over time. We spent our adolescent years together, and now some of us are in our 30s. I really think the only way we've survived as the last so-called boy band is because we've grown to respect each other and our differences. We don't always get along, but it's all the perspectives that we each bring that make us who we are.

ATR: What has been the biggest adjustment from performing as a mainstream artist to CCM?

BL: It seems like most people weren't expecting me to be so involved in CCM right away. I guess they figured I would just make a pop record and throw ''Amazing Grace'' on it. I wanted to make a record that reflected who I am as an individual, not a Backstreet Boy. This is something I had wanted to do way before Backstreet. Little did I know I would be blessed with the platform I've been given to share God's love.

A lot of people questioned my view of what I thought the Christian world was, and criticized me a little for performing both in Backstreet and as a CCM artist. But I ask, ''Why not?'' It's only because of my mainstream success that people all over the world are interested in my Christian music.

ATR: How do you plan to unfold the rest of 2007?

BL: I'll be on tour with Mac Powell from Third Day, Shane & Shane and Trevor Morgan until the end of the month, supporting a collaborative album that we all were a part of called Glory Revealed. After that, I'll hopefully be shooting the video for the first Backstreet single and jumping on that locomotive for a while through the summer. Since all four of us have now done solo projects, we're planning to incorporate some small bits of our individual acts into the show. We're all excited to show off a little of what we've been doing on our own.

I loved Brian's solo album. Even though I'm not really religious, it was a very good pop/rock album and very enjoyable. Many of the songs can have meaning to people, other than a Christian meaning.

Can't wait for the new BSB album, as you all know ;). Will be good to hear the first single, whenever that will be.

I have just covered their BAckstreet's Back song.. Have a look on it...
I'm just hoping it's not a repeat of Never Gone, as I have said before..I want them to go back to the sound that I fell in love with. :)

From what I'm hearing of the new album (in interviews and stuff) it sounds like there will be some songs which go back to their original style :).
