April 25, 200718 yr Chartifacts (Thanks to Gavin Ryan) Not since December 2005 has an Australian Solo Female Singer either been at, or debuted at the No.1 spot on the Australian charts, but this week sees the return of Missy Higgins to the top of our charts. The song "Steer" debuts at the top of the charts, something which she has done before with her August 2004 EP "Scar". That was the first of four tracks taken from her debut album "The Sound of White" which spent six weeks at the top of the album charts, and it is expected that her second album "On a Clear Day" will also be a chart topper for the May 7th chart, as it's released on April 28th. Her other singles from that album included "Ten Days" (No.12, Nov 2004), "The Special Two EP" (No.2, April 2005) and "The Sound of White" (No.22, August 2005). Missy's "Steer" is the first time that such a word has appeared in a No.1 song in Australia, and it becomes the 922nd No.1 in this country. "Steer" becomes the 136th Australian Performed No.1 song, and it's also the first time since June 2006 that a female artist has taken over from another female artist when Shakira took over from Rihanna, as Missy takes over from Avril Lavigne who only stayed at the top of the charts for a single week with "Girlfriend" (No.2 this week). Two former chart-topping female's also debut within the Top 10 this week at No.5, Beyonce and Shakira with the duet "Beautiful Liar". Beyonce hit the top in January this year with "Irreplaceable" (No.30 this week) for three weeks, and Shakira has hit the top three times with "Whenever, Wherever" and "Underneath Your Clothes" (both 2002) and "Hips Don't Lie" (June 2006). The track is taken from Beyonce's re-packaged "B'Day" album which I talk more about in the album section below. For the fifth week in a row, TV Rock's "The Others" holds at No.15, something of a chart rarity to stay put for five weeks, but the biggest climbing single of the week goes to the media saturated Red Hot Chili Peppers with the fourth single from their "Stadium Arcadium" (No.11 this week) album "Hump de Bump", jumping from last week's debut of No.23 to No.17 this week. The third debut for the week comes from Matchbox 20 lead singer Rob Thomas, coming in at No.22 is "Little Wonders". It's taken from the new Disney movie "Meet the Robinsons", and is his first charting single since "Something to Be" (No.40, March 2006), and his biggest was his first SOLO single (not the one with Santana), "Lonely No More" which hit No.3 in April 2005. Dannii Minogue debuts at No.37 with "He's the Greatest Dancer" a cover of the Sister Sledge track from 1979 which originally made No.22. This is not Dannii's first cover song, she's previously charted with "This is it" (1993), "Coconut" (1998) and "I Begin to Wonder" (2003). Her biggest hit is still her first from 1990 "Love and Kisses" which hit No.6. Silverchair equal their previous best effort at the top of the album charts by staying for a third week with "Young Modern", the same amount of time as "Frogstomp" did in 1995. If they do manage to stay for another week, "Young Modern" will be their longest performing No.1 album, but we'll have to wait and see. Occupying the No.2 spot on both the singles and albums chart this week is Avril Lavigne, who's third album debuts at No.2 "The Best Damn Thing". Her two previous albums both went to No.1, "Let Go" (7 weeks, December 2002) and "Under My Skin" (1 week, May 2004), so maybe her third will eventually join the others at the top? Nine Inch Nails have never had a No.1 album in Australia, their best effort being the No.2 album from 1999 "The Fragile", and now their second best performing album debuts at No.5 this week in the form of "Year Zero". Trent Reznor/Nine Inch Nails last chart entry was May 2005's "[With Teeth]" which debuted and peaked at No.10. Beyonce's second solo album originally reached No.8 late last year when it was released, but unfortunately quickly fell off the charts. It has been bobbing up and down at the edge of the Top 50 ever since, but two weeks ago it was re-issued with a bonus CD, one of which has this week's No.5 debut "Beautiful Liar", the duet with Shakira. Beyonce started her first National Solo tour in Australia on the 21st of April, so the combination of the new single and tour has helped the repackaged album jump back into the charts at No.13 this week.
