Ok so theres a lot of stuff about NIN going about right now, what with the release of the new Album "Year Zero," and Tren Reznors new found confidence on stage due to him being off the booze and the drugs. But come on, they are frickin everywhere. I went into Tesco today and almost every music magazine had something, if not an entire front cover, about them.

Personally I think they are overrated as hell. The music is extremely boring and lacks definitive high points in the songs. Its like being on a rollercoaster with no twists or turns. Its one long playing field from start to finish without anything to get you going.

Does anyone else feel the same? or am I alone here?

BTW just came back to this site. I forgot all about it for a few months lol :P

I totally disagree with you I'm afraid.. Nine Inch Nails may have taken their cues from the likes of Frontline Assembly, Skinny Puppy, Nitzer Ebb, etc, but they did what no other Industrial act did previously - humanize the genre, bring actual emotion into it and without NIN, you'd have no Marilyn Manson, no White Zombie/Rob Zombie no Rammstein, probably no Nu Metal and no alternative scene as we know it either, NIN created a revolution in American music in the 90s and inspired scores of bands.. The viral net campaign that Trent has initiated on the Internet to not only promote "Year Zero" but to enhance the experience of listening to an album and take it way beyond the act of merely putting a CD into a player, and make it truly a multimedia experience is brave and inspiring... I hope other bands will take notice of what Trent has done here and take it to another level.... The guy is a leader. "Pretty Hate Machine" is one of the greatest albums of the past 20 years of any genre and one that I never ever tire of listening to, a modern classic in every sense of the phrase, and truly an EMOtional aural experience...

No, Nine Inch Nails are NOT over-rated, even a bad or indifferent NIN album still beats about 90% of everything else out there....

To say that NIN's music has no definitive high points and is boring is quite incorrect of you, if you'd ever been to a NIN concert and heard and saw how the crowd reacts to songs like "Hurt", "Sin", "Head Like A Hole", "Wish", "The Wretched" or "Terrible Lie" you would not be saying that at all...

Ok, two things from reading this.

Number 1, I couldn't help but spot the irony of someone with Andrew WK in their sig calling an established and popular band over-rated.

Number 2, if NIN are to blame for Marilyn Manson and 'nu-metal' then they should have been drowned immediately after 'Wish'.

For me NIN haven't done anything worth listening to since 'Closer'. I think the reason they're ubiquitious in the rock press just now is cos there's nothing much else happening...and it is a big comeback of sorts.

Not all Nu Metal is bad Rich - Korn, Stabbing Westward, Orgy, SoaD (okay, not exactly Nu Metal, but they kinda rode in on the back of it..), My Ruin, Slipknot (after the first album...) are all pretty good.. Manson certainly never used to be as sh!t as he is now, the first two Reznor-produced albums are excellent...

"Closer" is one of NIN's weaker tracks mate, well, okay, not weak exactly, just horrendously overplayed to the point where I just switch off whenever I hear it.. Most of "The Fragile" is excellent, particularly the non-single tracks, and "With Teeth" was a fairly solid album.. "Year Zero" is the best thing they've done in ages, certainly more consistent as an album than the previous two...

then again they might be rated just right

I would always recommend an NIN novice to start with "Pretty Hate Machine".... "Year Zero" is probably something you'd need to work up to....

It's Q mate..... Almost as bad as NME..... Frankly, I wouldn't really believe anything the mainstream music press tells you about any band....

so what publications would you recommend??? newspapers? fansites?

Underground, small circulation fanzines which tend to be written by genuine music lovers rather than hacks who are only looking at it as a stepping stone into a career in novels or the national press.... Dunno what 'zines you'll have available in your particular manor mate, you'll have to investigate yourself....

yea, if you havent listened to a lot of NIN you might think they're overrated but they're actually not. If you can call NIN "they"
If you can call NIN "they"

Well, I kinda think you can though People seem to forget that Charlie Clouser and Alan Moulder are pretty important to the over-all sound of NIN as well... NIN isn't just a one-man show... And of course Jordy White (aka Twiggy Ramirez) is in the band too....

Look, your all jumping on the bandwagon like a bunch of sheep. get a grip. the album is stop-start, it has no consistency, its just one annoying son of a bjtch of an album. Not one song catches in my head. Its totally c**p lol. Why anyone would like to listen to something that annoys you with its stop-start beats is beyond me.

Every song starts with a synthesised drum beat. how original. it reminds me of Evanescences overused powerchords.

Nightmara, with all due respect, you dont know what you're talking about, and you clearly dont know anything about the dynamics of Industrial music... Jumping on the bandwagon...? Listen, I've been into NIN's music since the first sodding album back in '89.... Bandwagon jumping..? Don't talk nonsense... I'm not some clueless little 14 year old who's only heard "Hand That Feeds" or "Closer".... Maybe you're finding it "annoying" because you just aint heard much Industrial... I would suggest actually listening to some.... Frontline Assembly, KMFDM, Nitzer Ebb, Ministry, Laibach and Front 242 are pretty good places to start.... You've been praising Linkin sodding Park's new poppy pile of sh!t to the hilt on another thread, doesn't really speak to your credibility to comment on NIN to be honest....

And just for the record, Amy Lee, Marilyn Manson, Mike Shinoda, et al... ripped off Trent, NOT the other way round... Get that right at least....

Nah I think not.

I've just recently started to get into some of their stuff on reccomendation.

is nightmara going on about the album in comparison to other NINI albums or just about the act towards other bands???

Industrial metal is my favourite genre grim. dont judge me because i have a couple of bands that are out of the ordinary for someone like that. Sure I like Linkin Park, I was brought up listening to them. But my favourite genre is industrial metal, bands like Eisbrecher. NIN may have influenced these other industrial bands, but it doesn't mean theyre better than them. NIN are the experimental band. They try things out, and other bands perfect it. Thats the way I look at it. Why have a herbal tea to ease pain when you can take morphine. NIN, I thank you for ur ideas. But thats all.

I don't think Linking Park, Manson or Ev 'perfected' anything NIN did at all, they watered it down and made it commercial.... Have you heard Manson's past couple of albums - utterly WEAK..... And Linkin Park have just turned into another Good Charlotte/Fall Out Boy pissy, wanky little Emo band, as for Evanescence, "Fallen" is just NIN-by-numbers in terms of its teen angsty lyrics and guitar chords, although I will confess to rather liking their new album.. If Industrial is your favourite genre you should be on here starting threads about Skinny Puppy, FLA, Neubauten, and having a pic of Ohgr, Genesis P. Orridge or Al Jourgenson in your sig....

As for not having any memorable songs on "Year Zero"... Nonsense, I cant get "Survivalism" or "My Violent Heart" out of my head atm.....
