The summer of ‘82 gave 2 artists 4 long weeks at no. 1, Dexy’s Midnight runners were back with a new image and sound with Come on Eileen, who could forget when Jackie Wilson said had a backdrop of Jocky Wilson (the dart player) on TOTP.

Survivor also had 4 weeks at the top with Eye of the tiger from Rocky 3.

The Jam were still hitting the top with A town called Malice and Beat surrender.

Boy George surfaced with do you really want to hurt me?

There were some really weird no 1 in this year from Goombay Dance band, Rene & Renato, Tight Fit and Captain Sensible.

However Madness finally got a No. 1 with House of fun, there other hits were Driving in my car and Our House.

The Stranglers got to No.2 with Golden Brown.

The spans and the durans were still slugging it out, with the durans edging it with Hungry like a wolf, Save a prayer and Rio.

The clash released Rock the Casbah and Should I stay or should I go. The Human League gave us Mirror Man. XTC had a hit with Senses working overtime. Kim Wilde sang about a View from a bridge and Cambodia. Roxy Music with Avalon and More than this.

New wave was ending with Japan singing I second that emotion and Ghosts, Visage had Night Train, and Soft Cell said Say hello wave goodbye and Torch.

New bands to this year included:

ABC with classic songs Poison Arrow, The look of love and All of my heart.

Yazoo - Only You, Don’t go

PHD - I won’t let you down

Associates - Party fears two, Club country, 18 carat love affair

Bananarama - started with funboy 3 singing Really saying something and shy boy

Toni Basil - Mickey

Daryl Hall & John Oates - I can’t go for that, Private eyes and Maneater

Tears for fears - Mad world

A Flock of seagulls - Wishing, I ran and space age love song

Simple Minds - Promised you a miracle, Glittering prize, Someone, somewhere in summertime.

Not a bad year in music, there's been worse.

what about White Car In Germany and Tell Me Easters On Friday they are the probs the best Associates singles ever and they were 1981 (first single was 1979 on double hip then they were on Situation Two). 18 carat love affair not that great.

Yazoo's Only You is, I reckon, the best single of the whole of the 80s.

Closely followed by Associates' Club Country and the clutch of ABC singles from Lexicon of Love. I preferred the later, darker Soft Cell stuff personally... but Say Hello is a truly brilliant single (murdered by David bloody Gray, though  )

Plus, Siouxsie released some great stuff in 1982.

It was the 80s' best year musically, I think.
