May 2, 200718 yr maybe the fact that on her AI performance she wore a moomoo that made her already plump self look gigantic didn't help matters :( I know. Same sentiments as you. Her dress didn't complement her at ALL. And she sang a boring song. And she might have gained a few pounds since last we saw her in such a public show. -_-
May 2, 200718 yr Its not all about radio airplay though. Its also about song quality and general "buzz", yes Maroon 5 have been out longer but they nowhere near have the status and hype Kelly holds. They've not been as huge as recently as she has been. 6,000,000+ bought/downloaded "Breakaway" because they liked her music, a good proportion of those have iTunes I'm sure, simply seeing Kelly on the homepage should be enough to spurn them on to preview, then buy the single? Its still not had an effect though. The size of Kelly's pop radio bullet speaks for itself, it of course had its initial HOOGE bullet, its new Kelly, hype of it all etc, its at this stage which we see whether the song can keep the momentum going and be a hit [like M5 have done] or for the buzz to wear off and for radio to realise it doesn't really like the song [as happened with Gwen and "Wind It Up"..]. She can always pick-up again I'm not denying that but an artist of Kelly's caliber should be able shift more than 100,000 sales in a week on name alone, which of course with "Never Again" she hasn't managed...
May 2, 200718 yr maybe people just 'Never Again' wanna hear or see Kelly and realized how dull she is?

Actually also Maroon 5's song has lost a huge part of its momentum on pop top 40 and even more worringly it has lost surprisingly lot also on adult top 40 where they are hugely popular. But still, like with Kelly, they could reverse their fortunes. Timbaland's new one is inside top five on pop top 40 right now and still bulleted even thou it did struggle a few months ago big time outside top ten. And you have to remember that since Billboard added downloads about two years ago there really has never been any huge firstweek sales for songs just released for radio no matter how big a star is. For example, Hips Don't Lie, SexyBack etc big debuts were released sever weeks if not even seveal months after their radio debut and their radio-airplay was huge by then. Kelly's last album has sold almost 6m in the US but you gotta remember that it happened during a period of two years and thanks to several hit singles. One reason why her single hasn't sold that much could be that many people who bought the last album actually aren't core-fans of her but bought the album because there were several good songs in there. So these people probably have no idea that she even has a new song out until they will hear it somewhere and that might not have happened yet. I think this weeks sales (released next week) will show better how the song has been received sales-wise. It will probably stay no 4 (beating Avril but being beaten by Ne-Yo who will benefit from all the hype surrounding the release of his new album) but might enjoy a nice increase in sales. Timbaland NEVER languished on the Pop 40. yes you name two examples which had repressed downloads but that still doesn't change the fact that Kelly's new single has been heavily advertised, hyped and what not. She is in a league of her own into terms of status. Of course she can pick things up, I've always said that but she hasn't had the most encouraging of starts and I'm certain the rest of the project won't go so smoothly. Also Ne*Yo doesn't have "hype" if so its very little, I'd put his success down to high audience numbers on radio and nothing more if I'm honest...

Also Ne*Yo doesn't have "hype" if so its very little, I'd put his success down to high audience numbers on radio and nothing more if I'm honest... Ne-Yo actually has hype this week...the same that all bigger names have during the week of their album's release thanks to loads of promo (talk shows, MTV's TRL, commercials etc.) and that will always help the sales of the current single also. And Timbaland did have problems on pop top 40 when it had plays per week around 5000. For a few weeks his spins were increasing only around 100 a week and audience impressions stayed pretty much even compared to previous weeks. Then it started to pick up airplay again rapidly. Also I cannot agree that Kelly's single has been heavily promoted yet. It had been only for a week on radio before its release as a download, she has done almost zero promotion so far (even on AI she didn't sing this one), and even the video was released just recently. I assume that the main promo will start in a week or two and even then it won't actually be promo for the song but for the upcoming album and "Never Again" being just a marketing tool for the album. I don't think that they necessarily even intended this single to become huge. It seems that loads of stars release very mediocre song nowadays as the lead single. They know that their fanbases will go out and buy the album anyways but to sustain high sales for as long as possible it is better to release the strongest tracks later (as a lead track radio stations will give even a lesser track at least decent number of spins but the follow-ups need actually have more quality) and that way get even the casual buyers to buy the album.
