Posted April 19, 200619 yr 'The New World' pioneering smell-o-vision Saturday, April 15 2006, 02:05 BST - by Dave West The New World / New Line Japanese cinemas showing new Colin Farrell film The New World will pioneer the use of smell-o-vision. The adventure movie is due for release in the country later this year, and a telecommunications company will provide theatres with the technology to pump odors during showings. NTT Communications Corp plans to provide seven different smells to synchronise with different scenes. Flowery will accompany a love scene, orange and grapefruit will go with joy, peppermint and rosemary will prevail during emotional parts and anger will come with a mix of eucalyptus and tea tree. The smells are emitted by machines under seats in the back rows of cinemas which mix different amounts of oils. Sequences for different films will in future be available for download, the manufacturer said. A $620 home version of the machine is already available from NTT, with the ability to work with films or work as aromatherapy. So if all movies could smell, what would your cinema smell of?
April 25, 200619 yr I don't think a cinema should have a particular smell, but I love an all round experience when watching a film, It helps you to feel immersed in the movie :) I am intrigued by the possiblilty of smells accompanying a movie. I have a home cinema projector with surround sound, and that affords me a great feeling of actually being in the movie so to speak. I just think if you could have certain smells at certain times, it would enhance the experience. Imagine getting a rotting type smell, when in The Silence Of The Lambs, the body bag is drawn back, or a manure smell when in Back To The Future, Biff gets covered :D Or how about a smell of tar when in Any Which Way You Can, the Black Widows get a covering :D You could have nice smells too like coffee, fresh baked bread, flowers, pine forest etc :) I would be interested to go to a cinema in this country, if there was a trial of this here.
