News: 19 February 2006 NME.COM

Radio 1 reacts to Morrissey's comments

The station deny they are ageist

Radio 1 has responded to Morrissey's suggestion that the radio station is ageist.

The singer made the comments on Tuesday night (April 18) on the opening night of his tour in support of his album 'Ringleader Of The Tormentors' in Greater Manchester.

However, speaking to NME.COM today a spokesperson for Radio 1 said: "We don't decide what we will play based on the artists age, but we look at whether the track is something our listeners would be into. Colin (Murray) and Edith (Bowman) have actually played the track."

A recent Number One, 'Ringleader Of The Tormentors has provided Morrissey with his third solo album chart-topper.

Whose side are you on? Do you agree with Morrissey or Radio 1?

Personally I think it is a national joke that Radio 1 is supposed to be the nations most popular Radio station & yet Radio 2 consistently beats its sister station in the ratings - probably because it has better DJs who have had a habit of supporting forthcoming popular acts first (like Keane, James Blunt, Kubb, Maroon 5, Scissor Sisters, Lucie Silvas, Katie Melua & Jamie Cullum). While not being ageist & snubbing the recent return of Morrissey, Paul Wellar, Duran Duran & A-ha, etc.

Meanwhile, you only have to look at the clueless baffoons who present the weekly chartdown on Radio 1 every Sunday, whilst it's breakfast DJ Chris Moyles is more concerned about his ego & the sound of his voice than some up & coming new artist.

Radio 2 - c**p as usual

Radio 1 - good, but could be better. Get Chicane on the a-list grrr

nah radio 2 just needs a bit of jiggling

i thought the idea of the uk music scene was that it is agest and not like Germany where oldies like Mel C can have continued success. Thats why all acts that have had records out for ages go in top 20, drop about 20 places the next week and then are out of the chart to number 91.

then again

Number One In Denmark!!!

That new Christina Milian one is dreadful imo and it's A-listed. :o

:o Rob how dare you!!!!! I love Lady Sovereign! (I'm NOT a chav btw) and I love the new song with Ordinary Boys.

As for Radio 1, I deteste it I can't abide any of the "DJs" or whatever they're called nowadays most sutff they play is American RnB, cheese or stuff they know will be successful, so for the songs they don't think will be successful they don't bother playlisting them.

And why don't they have Daz on there? I know they don't usually put Eurovision songs on but this year's is amazing!!! The BBC should sort something out, our song for Europe not being playlisted on their biggest radio station pffft...

Really surprised they have Christina Milian and LL Cool J A Listed. :o

I usually never listen to radio 1, because they usually only play c**p (personal opinion).

If it's not rock music they hardly play it.

Personally I don't like Morissey. He's good at what he does but I just don't like it, and I think one of the main reasons that they don't play Morissey is that the station aimed audience is something like 10 - 35, and some people well they will have never of heard of him, and can't remeber him in his days in The Smiths (me included).

I actually quite like the new LL Cool J track but the zzzz zzzz zzzz really really annoys me.

probably because the song is c**p, and they dont wanna seem like a bunch of gimps want to keep the cool rating of the station still stella with the music that they play

Radio 1 cool rating? Cheese/Indie rating more like -_- Daz is the sort of stuff they'd play on there, and they probably would if he wasn't going for Eurovision.

True, I liked the original much better.

Hoodie is her best :cheer:
