Soul Avengerz hit the top

By Alan Jones

From musicweek

Soul Avengerz reached number three on the Upfront Club Chart earlier this year with their Sing EP – featuring Sing, Make My Body Rock and Get On Down – and secure their first number one on the list this week with Don’t Let The Morning Come.

Based on a riff from Tyrone Brunson’s 1982 electro smash The Smurf, it is a dynamic house anthem and a potential smash hit for the Song Contest and Games TV contestant Javine.

It provides the Positiva label with its fifth number one hit on the chart this year, following Deep Dish’s Dreams, Shapeshifters’ Incredible, Teamsters’ Feels Like Love and Axwell’s Watch The Sunrise.

The Upfront Club Chart remains extremely competitive, with another nine new entries arriving in the Top 40 this week, and a further 11 debuting in the unpublished 41-100 section of the chart.

The 10 making most progress outside the Top 40 are Move Your Body/Can U Dance by Marshall Jefferson & Kenny ‘Jammin’ Jason, Girls by Beenie Man ft Akon, Why by Lucky 7, Hail 2 The DJ by Medusa, Tell Me How You Feel by Krazy Kuts ft Yolanda, Big Area by Undercover Divas, Angel by Flip & Fill, Living On My Own/Love Kills by Freddie Mercury, Stepping To The Beat by DJ Jose and Party All The Time by Sharam.

Soul Avengerz also move 8-2 on the Commerical Pop Chart, failing to prevent Beyonce’s Déjà vu from taking pole position a week after it topped the OCC sales chart. Usually, a record will reach its club peak before commercial release, but hot mixes of Déjà vu by Freemasons and Maurice Joshua weren’t serviced until quite late in the day, hence the track’s tardy take-off.

The original mix of Déjà vu remains extremely popular in urban clubs allowing it to remain a number one on the Urban Club Chart for the second week in a row, with a 6% margin over Nelly Furtado’s Promiscuous, which remains at number two.

‘Dirty’ track cleans up

by Alan Jones

from musicweek

Knocking around for nearly a year in one form or another, Turn Me Out by Dirty Old Ann a funky house mash-up of 1995’s Turn Me Out by Praxis ft Kathy Brown and the Tom Moulton remix of Dirty Old Ann by The Three Degrees. It has reputedly sold more than 8,000 copies on white label, and jumps 12-1 on the Upfront Club Chart this week after finally being serviced to DJs ahead of its full commercial release. Put together by James Wiltshire of the Freemasons at the suggestion of Vincent Morrissey and Ann Jones, it’s been dropped by all the top names including Stonebridge, The Beginerz, Herd & Fitz, Michael Gray, Allister Whitehead, Soul Avengerz and Graeme Park.

Turn Me Out also jumps 14-2 on the Commercial Pop Chart, finishing up just behind the new number one, London Bridge by Fergie from Black Eyed Peas. Although, records topping the Upfront and Commerical Pop Charts simultaneously are fairly commonplace, few are number one on the Commerical Pop and Urban Charts at the same time – but that’s what Beyonce did last week, and Fergie does this week.

Already a number one in the US, London Bridge is due for full commercial release here next week, and made it to the top of both charts, finishing up 4% ahead of Dirty Old Ann on the Commerical Pop Chart and 2% ahead of both Nelly Furtado and Timbaland’s Promiscuous and Janet Jackson’s Call On Me on the Urban Chart.

Turnover in the Upfront Chart in recent weeks has been fast and frantic compared to the recent past, with a noticeable increase in hot tunes. As a result of all this activity, there are only two records in the Top 40 this week which have been in the chart more than five weeks – the lowest tally so far this year. The two with staying power are Love Don’t Let Me Go by David Guetta vs The Egg (10 weeks) and Basement Jaxx’s Hush Boy (eight weeks).

Meanwhile, breakers 11-20 this week are as follows: Around The World (La La La La La) by Killa Deejays ft Carrie Ryan, Shine by Luther Vandross, Party All The Time by Sharam, Exceeder by Mason, Celebrate The Summer by Lacuna, I Like It by Tune Brothers, Watching You by Rogue Traders, Something About You by Jamelia, Tonight’s The Night by Gina G and Akcent by Kylie.

Beatfreakz rock to the top

By Alan Jones

From musicweek

Dutch dance duo Beatfreakz topped both the Upfront and Commerical Pop Charts with their debut single, a house remake of Rockwell’s 1984 hit Somebody’s Watching Me, in April. The track went on to eclipse Rockwell’s original on the sales chart, peaking at number three and selling more than 130,000 copies.

On the grounds that it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, they have raided the Motown songbook again for their follow-up, a remake of Rick James’ Superfreak – a number 16 hit in the US in 1981, which failed to chart here, though it later formed the basis of MC Hammer’s number three success U Can’t Touch This. They are rewarded with another chart clean-up as the track rockets 14-1 on the Upfront and 8-1 on the Pop.

With mixes from Fonzerelli, Mason, Bimbo Jones, Friday Night Posse and Beatfreakz member Dennis Christopher as well as the band themselves, it emerges slightly ahead of Fedde Le Grande’s Put Your Hands Up For (Detroit) on the Upfront chart and Sun’s Gone on the Commerical Pop Chart.

Upfront Chart breakers this week are as follows: Sharam – Party All The Time, Infernal – Self Control, Mason – Exceeder, Deacon Blue – Real Gone Kid, Pete Walshe – Gonna Miss Me, Understate City – Set It Up In The Bentley, Angie Brown – I’m Gonna Get You, Bob Sinclar – Rock This Party, Various – Lab Recordings Autumn Sampler, and Jamelia – Something About You.

Meanwhile, there is a rare repeat top five on the Urban Chart, where Fergie’s London Bridge is number one for the second week, with the remainder of the frozen top tier comprising former chart-topper Nelly Furtado’s Promiscuous, Janet Jackson’s Call On Me, Beyonce’s Déjà vu and Cassie’s Me & U. Fergie’s lead is a still small 7% but London Bridge did at least make a modest gain in support, whilst the rest of the top five all suffered small declines.

London Bridge was also number one on the Commercial Pop Chart last week, but it now slips to number three there, while sliding 42-61 on the Upfront Chart.

Detroit track motors ahead

By Alan Jones

From musicweek

One of the hottest club records of 2006, Put Your Hands Up (For Detroit) by Fedde La Grand eases into pole position on the Upfront Club Chart this week, enjoying a handsome victory margin over runner-up and Data Records labelmate DJ Jose’s Stepping To The Beat.

DJ Le Grand’s electro-house monster has been huge in his native Netherlands, and was one of the big hits of Ibiza this summer. It has been in the Top 100 of the Upfront Club Chart for 14 weeks but had a very slow start as it was initially hard to find. It isn’t fully released until October 20 but is around on 12-inch, on which format has already reached Number 53 on the main OCC sales chart. It has also topped the 12-inch sales chart on two separate occasions in the past three months – 10 weeks ago when the original 12-inch was released, and again three weeks ago when new mixes issued.

An unusual and some say annoying record, it is also getting major support from Radio One, with specialist spins from the likes of Pete Tong, Annie Mac, Judge Jules and Fergie being supplemented by daytime play, with the track now firmly established on the station’s B-list.

While Le Grand plants the Dutch flag on the Upfront Chart summit, hotly tipped new girl group Nylon claim the Commerical Pop crown for Iceland with Sweet Dreams.

Currently supporting McFly on their UK tour, Nylon have been touted as the next Spice Girls, are huge in Iceland and reached number 29 on the OCC chart here in July with Losing A Friend.

Sweet Dreams is a cover of the old Eurythmics hit and will be a double A-side with a song called Closer, which has not been promoed to clubs. Nylon’s 11-1 leap on the Commerical Pop Chart is tough luck on DJ Jose, who – as on the Upfront Chart – has to settle for runners-up slot. The difference is that Nylon beat him by a margin of less than 1% compared to the 23% by which Fedde Le Grand beat him on the Upfront Chart.

Finally, there’s no change on the Urban Chart, where Fergie’s London Bridge spends a third week in charge, while Nelly Furtado’s Promiscuous is runner-up for the fifth week in a row.

Well deserved chart topper, mark my words, this will be the one that sparks an electro revolution!!!!

Traders get the knack

By Alan Jones

From musicweek

Rogue Traders reached number three on both the Upfront and Commercial Pop club charts in June with their single Voodoo Child, and went on to achieve the same placing on the OCC sales chart a month later.

The track, based around a sample from Elvis Costello’s Pump It Up, marked a successful UK debut for the Anglo-Australian band, and follow-up Watching You looks set to do even better.

Using the same rock/dance sound that made its predecessor such a success, Watching You is constructed around the riff from The Knack’s 1979 hit My Sharona, and jumps to the top of the Upfront and Commerical Pop charts this week.

On the Upfront Chart, it has a 139% victory margin over Oakenfold’s Sex ‘n’ Money, while it finishes up 274% ahead of nearest challenger Paris Avenue’s In My Mind on the Commerical pop chart.

Mixes of Watching You come from Chris Lake, Olli Collins & Fred Portelli, Dirty South and the Rogue Traders themselves.

Meanwhile, after three weeks at the top of the Urban Club Chart, Fergie’s London Bridge loses a close-fought battle and its leadership of the chart to P Diddy’s Come To Me, which made a slow start to its chart career but has moved 19-7-1 in the past fortnight. Come To Me is Diddy’s fifth number one on the chart, and features vocals from Nicole Scherzinger, who also fronts the Pussycat Dolls, whose own new hit I Don’t Need A Man is this week’s highest climber, jumping 26-8. The Pussycat Dolls track also makes the Top 10 of the sales chart this week, and is likely to be followed next week by Come To Me, which receives its physical release this week.

Finally, breakers on the Upfront Club Chart this week are as follows: Pussycat Dolls – I Don’t Need A Man, Girls Aloud – Something Kinda Ooooh, Bootyluv – Boogie2nite, Helena Paparizou – Mambo, Shibuku – Crazy Situation, Midnight Cowboys – Wicked Mountain, Outwork ft Mr Gee – Elektro, Gloria Estefan – Rhythm Is Gonna Get You ’06, Streetplayer ft Raychel – Give U What U Need, Fish Go Deep – The Cure and the Cause.

Thanks for the info CM.

Mason exceeds expectations

By Alan Jones

Pete Tong made it his Essential New Tune, Judge Jules proclaimed it Tried & Tested and Fergie chose it as his Speaker Freaker. Where Radio One leads, others follow, including our DJs, whose chart returns elect Mason’s exceeder number one on the Upfront Club Chart this week.

Beating off a challenge from Fatboy Slim’s latest Greatest Hits promo package by a 6.7% margin, Exceeder is the latest in the new wave of electro tracks to interrupt funky house’s recent domination of the chart.

Originating from the Netherlands, it’s also being dropped by many other big name DJs, including David Guetta, John Digweed, Sasha, Axwell, Deep Dish, Sander Kleinenberg, Sebastian Ingrosso and Erick Morillo.

Meanwhile, a familiar name returns to the top of the Commerical Pop Chart – Girls Aloud.

Something Kinda Ooooh is a new track from Girls Aloud’s upcoming greatest hits set The Sound Of Girls Aloud and continues their magnificent run on the chart, where they have had eleven consecutive top three entries, including six number ones.

Before Something Kinda Ooooh, they topped with No Good Advice, Jump, The Show, Love Machine and Biology; reached number two with Life Got Cold, I’ll Stand By You, Long Hot Summer and Whole Lotta History; and number three with Wake Me Up. Their only no-show came from their debut single Sound Of The Underground, which was rushed into the shops when the girls were formed from the female finalists of Pop Stars – The Rivals without enough time to put together a package for clubs.

Runner-up to Girls Aloud, the late Luther Vandross’s Shine – which bears the solid gold writing credit of Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards – has been serviced in a superb mix by the Freemasons, and misses out on a deserved top spot bu a sliver.

No change at the top of the Urban Chart, where P. Diddy & Nicole lengthen their lead with Come To Me. Nicole is lead singer of the Pussycat Dolls, whose I Don’t Need A Man could be the one to dethrone Come To Me, as it advances 8-3 this week on a 31% increase in support, though it is still 28% in arrears.

Cat in the hat is back

By Alan Jones

From musicweek

Jamiroquai have a long and distinguished record of success in the Upfront Club Chart stretching back to 1993 – but to an outsider they may have looked as though they have been faltering this year, with newly promoted remixes of their classic singles peaking at low positions in the past few months.

First to hit the dancefloor, Space Cowboy peaked at number 37 in June in mixes by Mayhem & Musaphia and David Morales. In July, Cosmic Girl (mixed by Tom Belton, Quasar and David Morales) peaked at number 56, followed in August by Deeper Underground (Paul Jackson, Roger Sanchez, Metro), which climbed no higher than number 61. Finally, Love Foolosophy (Raul Rincon, Knee Deep Lottie) reached number 51 last month.

But they were all very limited promos, serviced only to an elite few DJs, and serving as promotional teasers for the band’s first ever “best of†set: High Times: Singles 1992-2006. That album includes two new tracks, of which the first, Runaway, received a full servicing to DJs – and it has responded in more typical style, climbing 10-1 on the Upfront Chart this week. With mixes by Alan Braxe & Fred Faulke, Tom Belton & Grant Nelson, it has an easy succession to the chart throne this week beating its nearest competitor – Cass Fox’s remake of Touch Me, which she sang on the original Rui Di Silva hit – by a 19.5% margin.

Runaway was within a whisker of making it a double, missing out on the Commerical Pop Chart by a slender 3% margin to Pussycat Dolls’ I Don’t Need A Man, their first number one on this chart., though they have had three on the Urban Chart, where they inch up 3-2 this week.

Their very own lead singer Nicole Scherzinger is partly to blame for I Don’t Need A Man not yet topping the Urban Chart because the record that keeps it off the top – by a 9% margin – is P. Diddy’s Come To Me, on which her vocals provide a sweetener to Diddy’s rap. Come To Me will be the first single from Diddy’s Press Play album, which will also include guest spots from Christina Aguilera, Fergie, Mary J. Blige, Brandy and Keyshia Cole, among others.

Soul Seekerz in top spot

By Alan Jones

From musicweek

The same two records battled it out for supremacy on the Upfront and Commercial Pop Charts this week, and the result was one victory apiece. The Soul Seekerz take the Upfront title with Party For The Weekend, ahead of My Love by Justin Timberlake; on the Commercial Pop Chart, those positions are reversed, and in both charts, the victory margin was negligible.

For The Soul Seekerz, it’s a return to the top of the Upfront Chart which they topped exactly a year ago, in partnership with Dannii Minogue on Perfection. They didn’t manage to synchronise it then either, but Perfection did move to the top of the Commerical Club Chart the following week. The Soul Seekerz’ latest chart topper, Party For The Weekend, is a funky hands-in-the-air anthem, and their vocal foil this time is Kate Smith. Party For The Weekend has enlisted support from many big name DJs, including Judge Jules, Roger Sanchez, Dab Hands, Stonebridge, Graeme Park, Herd & Fitz, The Sharp Boys, Oliver Lang and the Trophy Twins.

It’s only 11 weeks since Justin Timberlake topped the Commercial Pop Chart with SexyBack and his return to the summit with My Love comes courtesy of mixes by Poker Face and Paul Jackson. While My Love rests at number 2 on the Upfront Chart, SexyBack climbed no higher than number 37 on the same list when it was promoed in August.

While reigns of two weeks are, in any case, extremely rare on the Commercial Pop Chart, Timberlake’s chances of pulling it off are smaller than most, primarily because there are four debuts in the Top 10 this week – the highest intake of the year – and each and every one of them is by an artist of substantial pedigree. Madonna, Sugababes, All Saints and Robbie Williams have over 30 Commercial Club Chart number ones between them and their combined tally is almost certain to increase next week.

My Love also climbs to pole position on the Urban Chart, where it emphatically ends a four week reign by P. Diddy & Nicole, moving 43% ahead of the latter disc. SexyBack reached number three on the Urban Chart just eight weeks ago, and has, surprisingly, revived strongly since My Love was promoed, moving 21-16-12.

Bootyluv Top Upfront List

By Alan Jones

From musicweek

There’s always a certain amount of crossover between the tracks that gravitate towards the top of the Upfront Chart and Commercial Pop Charts, but they are closer this week than at any time in 2006, with the top five in both charts being identical, save for the fact that Bootyluv and Madonna trade places at the top.

In both charts, Robbie Williams’ Lovelight, Sugababes’ Easy and My Love by Justin Timberlake are ranked at three, four and five, respectively. On the Upfront Chart, Boogie2Nite by Bootyluv is top, 3.7% ahead of Madonna’s Jump, but on the Commercial Pop Chart it’s Madonna who leads the way from Bootyluv, with a victory margin of 10.7%.

Bootyluv’s record is a housed-up remake of Tweet’s 2003 single which wasn’t a hit at the time, but which has become something of an anthem. Bootyluv are actually Nadia and Cherise from Big Brovaz, and their remake of Boogie2Nite has been remixed by DB Boulevard and Seamus Haji, among others. It’s already crossing over to radio in a big way, ahead of its November 27 release: it was ranked 38th on the radio airplay chart last week, and has just been added to the Radio One b-list.

Meanwhile, Jump is the fourth straight number one hit on the Commerical Pop Chart from Madonna’s Confessions On A Dance Floor album, arriving at the summit a year to the week after first hit Hung Up. Follow-up Sorry topped the list in February, and Get Together did likewise in July. They all topped the Upfront Chart too – a task that may prove too tough for Jump in the current, extremely competitive climate.

There’s an unchanged top three at the top of the Urban Chart, with Justin Timberlake’s My Love continuing to hold a big lead over P. Diddy’s Come To Me and Hands Up by Lloyd Banks. Diddy’s track was itself number one for four weeks and does well to hang on to second place, especially as Diddy’s follow-up, Tell Me – a collaboration with Christina Aguilera – is the highest of four new entries on the chart this week, debuting at number 17.

Thanks for the info. Pinned. Great to see Bootyluv at the top its my number one too!!!

Thoneick returns to top

By Alan Jones

From musicweek

Cover confusion seems to be the name of the game for Eddie Thoneick, who scampers to the top of the Upfront Chart this week alongside Berget Lewis.

It’s the second number one hit for Thoneick, who topped in April in partnership with Kurd Maverick with a version of the Love Sensation, even though a remixed version of the Loleatta Holloway original was in the Top 10 at the same time.

The record which was number two behind Thoneick & Maverick was Corenell’s remake of Clivilles & Coles classic 1992 hit Pride (A Deeper Love), under the abbreviated title of A Deeper Love – and it’s a new cover of the same song which earns Thoneick & Lewis chart honours this week.

Thoneick and Maverick were on All Around The World for Love Sensation, which scraped into the Top 40 at number 39 but Deeper Love is on CR2, the original home of Fedde Le Grande’s Put Your Hands Up (For Detroit), which was itself a number one club hit before crossing over to top the pop chart a week ago.

Although Sugababes’ last two singles – Red Dress and Follow Me Home – both settled for number two peaks on the Commerical Pop Chart, Easy springs 4-1 this week to become their 10th number one in a run that also includes Overload, Freak Like Me, Round Round, Stronger, Shape, Hole In The Head, Too Lost In You, Push The Button and Ugly. Easy slips 4-7 on the Upfront Chart, where a remix collection for Sugababes’ new hits set Overload jumps 15-9.

Meanwhile, Cascada registers her second straight Top 10 hit on the Commercial Pop Chart in as many weeks, with her Savage Garden cover Truly Madly Deeply debuting at number six a week after Miracle peaked at number nine. Both tracks are from her Everytime We Touch album, from which the title track was a number two sales hit earlier this year. Truly Madly Deeply is on All Around The World, and Miracle on Product/Incentive. Why they’re competing and on different labels is a mystery.

Finally, no change on the urban chart, where Justin Timberlake is number one for the third straight week with My Love.

Queen reigns over charts

By Alan Jones

From musicweek

A few weeks ago, new mixes of Freddie Mercury’s Living On My Own by The Egg and Love Kills by Sunshine People and Pixel 82 were given a limited promotional push to help publicise Mercury’s latest posthumous compilation The Very Best Of, and peaked at 33 on the Upfront Club Chart and 26 on the Commerical Pop Chart. Making a more spectacular impression this week, Mercury and his former colleagues in Queen catapult to the top of both charts with new mixes of their 1980 smash Another One Bites The Dust.

Credited to Queen vs Miami Project, and featuring mixes by Cedric Gervais & Second Sun, Oliver Koletski, A Skillz, Soul Avengerz and DJ Pedro & Olivier Berger, Another One Bites The Dust was bubbling away illicitly for much of the year before getting official clearance, and will be released commercially on December 18.

In addition to the vast majority of DJs returning our charts, Another One Bites The Dust has been supported by the likes of Pete Tong, Seb Fontaine, The Shapeshifters, Deep Dish, Alex Gaudino, Erick Morillo, David Guetta, Stonebridge, Freemasons, Herd & Fitz and K-Klass.

It’s one of three radically remixed classic cuts from 1979/80 by major rock acts in the Top 20 of the Upfront Club Chart at present ahead of commercial release on Positiva, the others being Proper Education by Eric Prydz vs Pink Floyd – a joint Positiva/Data release based around a sample from Pink Floyd’s Another Brick In The Wall – and Heart Of Glass, originally by Blondie but now credited to Blondie vs Edison. Proper Education debuts at number 13 this week, and Heart Of Glass at number 14.

On the Urban Chart, Justin Timberlake is number one for the fourth week in a row with My Love, narrowly holding off an attempted takeover by Akon & Eminem, whose Smack That surges 4-2, while reducing its deficit from 21% to 9%. At the time of Music Week going to press, the battle for sales supremacy on the singles chart was being fought out by the same two combatants but Smack That looked far more likely to emerge as top dog ahead of My Love.

The Superfreak returns

By Alan Jones

From musicweek

10 weeks after Beatfreakz topped the Upfront and Commerical Pop charts with a remake of Rick James’ Eighties dancefloor classic Superfreak, another of the late, legendary Canadian’s songs repeats the feat.

The track doing the double this week is PATT (Party All The Time), a rousing louped house revival of a tune James wrote and produced, titled simply Party All The Time, for Eddie Murphy in 1985. The new version is by Sharam, better known as one half of Washington-based Iranian duo Deep Dish, who have had a string of number one hits, most recently with their remake of Fleetwood Mac’s Dreams, featuring original vocalist Stevie Nicks. Promoted with a plethora of mixes and schedules for release on Boxing Day, PATT is already on the B-list at Radio One, having previously been caned by their specialist dance DJs, notably Pete Tong and Judge Jules.

Originally on Yo$h!toshi, on which label it previously had a run in the extended (Top 100) version of the Upfront Club Chart in the summer, PATT was a big club success at Miami and Ibiza before arriving on these shores. It is the second version of Party All The Time to achieve club success in recent weeks, following hot on the heels of Euphonix’s version – titled My Girl Wants To Party after another chunk of the original’s lyrics – which peaked at number 45 Upfront and number seven Commercial Pop a few weeks ago. The original Party All The Time failed to chart here at all for Eddie Murphy, though it sold two million copies in America, where it peaked at number two.

Meanwhile, after four weeks at number one on the Urban Chart, My Love by Justin Timberlake is narrowly defeated, and slips to number two. The track to replace it is the one which denied it top billing on the Official UK Chart singles rundown – Smack That by Akon ft Eminem. The Akon track establishes a slender 2% lead at the summit.

Akon actually bookends the chart, as he also holds the number 30 position with the new entry I Wanna Luv U, which also features Snoop Dogg, and will be released as a single next year.

Freemasons return to the top

By Alan Jones

From musicweek

Brighton house duo The Freemasons achieve their third straight double number one this week, ascending to the summit of both the Upfront and Commerical Pop charts with Rain Down Love.

The Freemasons victory should not be underestimated; there were up against very stiff opposition, with Eric Prydz vs Pink Floyd’s Proper Education and Christina Aguilera’s Hurt finishing as their runners-up.

Rain Down Love features the vocals of the estimable Siedah Garrett – who matched her vocals to Dennis Edwards’ on Don’t Look Any Further and Michael Jackson’s on I Just Can’t Stop Loving You – and is already on the Radio One C-list, even though it isn’t released commercially until January 8, 2007.

The Freemasons have had many club hits as mixers, most recently on Luther Vandross’ Shine, and as artists they previously topped both charts in August 2005 with Love On My Mind, and repeated the feat in January with their follow-up Watchin’. Both of these tracks featured vocals from Amanda Wilson, and managed to reach the Top 20 of the OCC sales chart.

Love On My Mind was based around a sample from Jackie Moore’s 1979 single This Time Baby and topped the year-end Upfront and Commerical Pop Charts in 2005. Watchin’ won’t be too far away from doing likewise in the 2006 lists, as it spent a fortnight at the top of both charts, and hung around for a long time when turnover was sluggish at the start of the year.

While The Freemasons’ victory on the other two charts was comfortable, Akon ft Eminem only retained their Urban Chart title after a struggle. While Jay-Z’s Show Me What You Got moved 3-2 as it closed the gap to less than 1%, former chart topper Justin Timberlake 2-3 dip with My Love was accompanied by a slight increase in support, and it is still very much in touch with the top two, 3% in arrears. Timberlake, in turn, is only 1% ahead of Gwen Stefani’s fast-rising Wind It Up, which added 23% extra support last week but only moves 6-4. Stefani’s single is, however, 20% ahead of fifth placed Snoop Dogg, and is well-placed to make a decisive move over the coming week.

Great to see Freemasons doing so well. Should give them another top 20 hit. Great tune.

Prydz does it again

By Alan Jones

From musicweek

Some 27 years to the week after Pink Floyd topped the singles chart with Another Brick In The Wall, they make an unexpected appearance at the top of the Upfront Club Chart with Proper Education, DJ Eric Prydz’s 21st century revision of the track.

Scheduled for release on New Year’s Day, as a joint Data/Positiva release, it is believed to be the first track to use a legally cleared Pink Floyd sample, its legal status being alluded too in the Eric Prydz vs Floyd artist credit. It’s the long-awaited follow-up to Swede Prydz’s 2004 hit Call On Me, which successfully transformed a sample from the 1987 Steve Winwood hit Valerie into a number one club and sales hit.

Although Proper Education had an easy victory on the Upfront Club Chart, where it powered 23.7% ahead of runner-up Shanie’s Don’t Give Me Your Life, it falls just short of making it a double, finishing second on the Commerical Pop Chart behind Girls Aloud’s latest smash. It’s the first time that the Upfront and Commerical Pop Charts have had a different number one for four weeks. Queen vs Miami Project, Sharam and the Freemasons have all enjoyed twin toppers in the interim.

I Think We’re Alone Now – a version of the Tommy James & The Shondells hit best known here for Tiffany’s 1988 cover – arrives at the Commerical Pop Chart summit only nine weeks after Girls Aloud’s last single, Something Kinda Ooooh.

It continues their magnificent run on the chart, where they have had seven number ones, and 12 consecutive top three hits – if we overlook the odd Girls On 45/Stars On 45 mash-up which was serviced in very limited quantities to promote their Greatest Hits album and reached number 23 six weeks ago.

Before I Think We’re Alone Now, they topped with No Good Advice, Jump, The Show, Love Machine, Biology and Something Kinda Ooooh.

On the Urban Chart, Jay-Z’s Show Me What You Got increases its support for the sixth week in a row and moves 2-1, ending the two-week reign of Akon & Eminem’s Smack That, which slips to number three. Completing an all hip-hop top three, That’s That by Snoop Dogg & R. Kelly jumps 5-2, pulling up just 2% short of the summit.
