De Souza Heds to the top

By Alan Jones

From musicweek

The Hed Kandi label landed three number ones on the Upfront Club Chart in 2006, topping the list with Fade by Solu Music, My Life by Chanel and Boogie2Nite by Bootyluv. This week it secures its first chart-topper of 2007 with Guilty by De Souza ft Shena.

The track is tipped to be this year’s Lola’s Theme and has already topped the Cool Cuts chart. In mixes from Bimbo Jones and Eddie Thoneick, it is getting massive support from many of the nation’s top club and radio DJs and has just been added to Radio One’s C-list.

While it shares its title with the single and album Barry Gibb produced for Barbra Streisand, it is prodded by a sample not from the track Guilty itself but by a sample from another track on the album, namely Make It Like A Memory. The somewhat speeded-up sample, however, is strictly instrumental and Babs-free – the vocals on Guilty are provided by Shena, who is also the singer on Junior Jack’s Dare Me (Stupidisco).

In addition to claiming the Upfront Chart crown, where it was hotly pursued by the new Boss sampler and Work by Masters At Work, Guilty has a narrow victory on the Commerical Pop Chart, where the aforementioned Masters At Work track is also runner-up.

After four weeks at the top of the Urban Chart, I Wanna Love You by Akon ft Snoop Dogg slips to number two. It’s overhauled – but barely – by Nathan’s Do Without My Love.

In a chart increasingly dominated by American hip-hop tracks on major record labels, it’s refreshing to see a British R&B track on the London indie label Mona make the grade; but Nathan had to sweat to get there, spending two weeks at number three and three weeks at number two before finally sneaking to the summit. Do Without My Love is only the second single by Nathan to make the chart – the first, Come Into My Room, barely registered, reaching number 27 in 2005. Nathan is a 20-year-old from South London, and will shortly be releasing his first album, Masterpiece.

Another Chance hit top

By Alan Jones

From musicweek

Jon Pearn & Nick Bridge registered a major hit – club and sales – last year with Yeah Yeah in their Bodyrox guise, and race to the top of the Upfront Club Chart this week with Everytime I See Her (Sound Of Eden) under the name Another Chance.

The parenthetical part of the song’s title gives a clue to the fact that it is a cover of the Shades Of Rhythm instrumental which topped the club chart in 1991.

In Another Chance’s version it features a full but uncredited vocal, and its arrival at the top of the club chart comes a full three months after it topped the Cool Cuts chart, and entered the Upfront Club Chart at number 91. It has been in the extended version of the Upfront Club Chart ever since, first as a rare promo on Phonetic, and more latterly in an impressive 10 mix promo on the joint Phonetic/Positiva imprint.

Meanwhile, the ever busy All Around The World label chalks up another Commercial Pop Chart number one with a new package of mixes of Masters At Work’s typically tribal 2001 single Work. Although a big Upfront club hit at the time, the record never managed to cross over to more commercial venues or radio, and consequently achieved a poor OCC sales chart peak of number 192. It has been rumbling around ever since, and has remained especially popular on the continent. In its latest incarnation it features newer and more commercial mixes from Kenny Hayes, Riffs & Rays, Deep Life and The House Agents, and wins the race for number one on the Commercial Club Chart at a canter.

It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish that matters in the battle for chart supremacy, and although The Game’s Wouldn’t Get Far looked set for Urban Chart honours when it debuted at number five a fortnight

ago, it immediately dipped to number seven, and now slips another notch to number eight. The same week it made its high flying debut, Timbaland’s Give It To Me arrived at number 20. It stole The Game’s number five slot last week and now powers to the top of the chart, where it replaces Nathan’s Do Without My Love. Number one by a convincing 18% margin, it features guest vocals from Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado and is taken from Timbaland’s upcoming album Stock Value.

X-Press 2 chant to the top

By Alan Jones

From musicweek

The song Witchi Tai To is based on a healing chant and was written in 1969 by Jim Pepper, a Native American (Indian) jazz saxophonist. It became his best known work, and attracted many covers, providing a minor hit in America for Harpers Bizarre and an airplay hit here for Topo D. Bil. X-Press 2 have been threatening to record it for at least two years and, having finally got round to it, are rewarded with a number one placing on the Upfront Club Chart this week. The band are no strangers to the chart apex, having previously reached number one with Give It (2005), Lazy (2002) and The Sound (1996) but their last entry, Kill 100, got no further than number 45 last year.

Witchi Tai To is a title which caused some problems to our panel of DJs, who found no fewer than seven different ways to style it on their returns but once they were all added together, Witchi Tai To secured an 12-1 leap on the chart, narrowly outperforming Someone Like Me by Soulcast.

The latter record is actually the strongest performer this week when Upfront and Commercial chart returns are added together, but tops neither individual chart, having to settle for runner-up position on both, being 3.6% in arrears on the Upfront Club Chart and a slender 0.8% behind on the Commercial Pop Chart.

Meanwhile, Hilary Duff chalks up her first number one on the Commercial Pop Chart with With Love. It’s a track that her label, Disney subsidiary Hollywood, clearly wanted to break in the clubs – her Wikipedia entry lists 18 mixes of the track that have been promoed in various countries, a total that doesn’t include the rejected Jason Nevins mix. On the UK promo of With Love, the mixes are provided by The Houzecrushers, Bimbo Jones and Richard Vission. Duff’s last entry to the Commercial Club Chart, Beat Of My Heart, reached number 17 last year.

Finally, there’s a total logjam in the urban chart, where the entire top eight are frozen. That’s good news for Timbaland and his celebrity pals Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado, whose Give It Up To Me is top of the stack again, and lengthens its lead over second and third placed rivals Nathan and Akon.

Dada licks the competition

By Alan Jones

From musicweek

Lollipop licks its rivals in the battle for Upfront Chart honours this week, jumping 5-1 for Dada ft Sandy Rivera & Trix. The track, which has already topped the Cool Cuts chart, has received massive exposure from the likes of Pete Tong and has just been added to Radio One’s C-list. The latest success for The Ministry Of Sound’s Data label, it was promoed in a plethora of mixes from Jerry Ropero, Breeze & Bad Hand, The Drill, Nic Fabciulli, Andy Daniell Myoozikk and Sandy Rivera, and has a comfortable 9% lead at the top of the chart over Gaelle’s Give It Back.

The Dada single almost took the Commerical Pop Chart crown too, just losing out to Leave Me Alone (I’m Lonely), the fifth single from Pink’s I’m Not Dead album and the first to top the Commercial Pop Chart.

The track – paired for commercial release with the politically-charged Indigo Girls’ collaboration Dear Mr. President – is turned into a club contender courtesy of Digital Dog, and exceeds the Commercial Club chart peaks of previous I’m Not Dead singles Stupid Girls (number two), Why Knew (seven) and U & Ur Hand (three). Nobody Knows, the fourth single from the album, was not given a dance mix, and didn’t chart. While a lot of pop artists also achieve major success on the Upfront Chart, none of the Pink singles mentioned above have been given an upfront push, with the result that Stupid Girls peaked at number 24, Who Knew at number 41, and U & Ur Hand at number 54. Leave Me Alone (I’m Lonely) shows up at number 36 upfront this week.

Hefty assists from Nelly Furtado & Justin Timberlake help Timbaland to enjoy a third week atop the Urban Chart, but Fergie is thundering up behind and could seize control next week.

Lots of action beyond the published Top 40 this week: 11 Jump Around – House Of Pain, 12 Back To Black – Amy Winehouse, 13 Movin’ Up – DJ Mike Cruz ft Inaya Day & Chyna Ro, 14 I Wanna Have Your Babies – Natasha Bedingfield, 15 Without Love – Judge Jules, 16 I Get Around – Dragonette, 17 Here (In Your Eyes) – Hellogoodbye, 18 Back To Hawaii – Picco, 19 When Love Becomes A Lie – Liz Kay, 20 So Strong – Jason Herd ft Katherine Ellis.

Booty Luv back at the top

By Alan Jones

Some 21 weeks after reaching number one with their dynamic debut Boogie2Nite, Booty Luv storm back to the top of the Upfront Club Chart, this time with Shine.

Booty Luv is actually Nadia and Cherise from Big Brovaz. Boogie2Nite – a housed-up remake of Tweet’s 2003 single of the same name – was a huge success for them and not just in the clubs. It peaked at number two in the sales chart, and has so far sold more than 175,000 copies. It remains a club staple, and slips 96-100 on the extended version of the Upfront Club Chart, where it has now resided for 27 weeks.

Shine is a worthy successor to Boogie2Nite and won a landslide victory on the Upfront Club chart this week, finishing up a massive 40.4% ahead of its nearest challenge. That is the widest victory margin for years, though we should also commend their runners-up, Blue Ray ft Jimmy Somerville, for the fact that their You & Me single roars to a number two debut this week, to become the highest new entry so far in 2007.

Shine is a remake of a posthumously-released Luther Vandross song which reached number 25 on the club chart last October, and is already getting plenty of exposure to go with its club support, including Radio One airings from Pete Tong, Scott Mills and The Trophy Twins.

Despite its popularity at upfront venues, however, Shine has to settle for second slot on the Commerical pop chart, where an even more dynamic female duo – the superstar pairing of Beyonce and Shakira – hold sway with their collaboration Beautiful Liar. Jumping 21-1 on the chart, and appearing in mixes by The Freemasons and Maurice Joshua, Beautiful Liar also makes its maiden appearance at number 31 on the Upfront Chart, and climbs 14-3 on the Urban Chart.

Its progress on the latter list is restricted by the runaway success of the top two – Fergie’s Glamorous is in second place for the third straight week but Timbaland’s Give It To Me, which also features Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake, is number one for the fifth week in a row and doesn’t seem set to relinquish its title any time soon – it holds a commanding 34% lead.

Happy Days for Fonzerelli

By Alan Jones

From musicweek

Irish DJ Aaron McLelland has been one of the busiest mixers on the Club Chart in the last year, adding his unique house/trance interpretations to hits like Be Free With Your Love (Miami Dub Machine), My Life (Chanel), Superfreak (Beatfreakz), Dance 4 Life (Tiesto), Music’s Got Me (Stu Allen), In The Air Tonight (Dr Flash & The Joker), Hold Me Till The End (DT8 Project), Float Away (Robbie Rivera), He’s A Runner (Star Alliance) and Counting Down The Days (Sunfreakz), to name just 10 of those that have made the top 20 of the Upfront Club Chart.

Yet it wasn’t until June 17, 2006 that McLelland made his debut on the chart, under the alias Fonzerelli, with his own single Moonlight Party. Two weeks after debuting at number 33, it was number one. McLelland has clearly been very busy ever since, so it is, perhaps, no surprise that it has taken him until now to come up with a Fonzerelli follow-up, I Love Music, which duly rockets to the top of the chart this week, easily fending off a challenge from The Hoxtons’ (aka The Hoxton Whore) remake of the David Essex hit Gonna Make You A Star. I Love Music – refreshingly an original piece not related to the O’Jays hit – also includes mixes by Brazillica, Missing In Action and Yer Man, the latter Ulsterism being another McLelland doppelganger.

The same two tracks are the highest new entries on the Commercial Pop Chart, where The Hoxtons debut at number five and Fonzerelli at number 10. Meanwhile, the top three on the Commerical Pop Chart move up 10 places in convoy. Liz Kay advances 13-3 with When Love Becomes A Life; Lionel Richie springs 12-2 with All Around The World; and Rush Hour by SJB catapults 11-1. The latter track is a remake of former Go-Gos star Jane Wiedlin’s only solo hit Rush Hour, featuring a vocal reprise from Wiedlin herself. Aaron McLelland gets in on the act here too, providing Fonzerelli mixes to a wide-ranging package that also features contributions from 7th Heaven, Bass Slammers vs Catch 22, Paul Young, Public Domain and Northsound.

There’s no change at the top of the Urban Chart, with Timbaland’s Give It To Me taking chart honours for the sixth week in a row, still way ahead of Fergie’s Glamorous (number two for the fourth consecutive week) and Beyonce & Shakira’s Beautiful Liar, which remains at number three.
