According to XFM, New Order have split and they will never come back again...

In an interview with Xfm last night (May 4), New Order bass player Peter Hook confirmed that legendary Manchester band New Order have split up. And this time it's definitely for good...

Xfm Manchester DJ Clint Boon, called up Hooky to speak to the bassist about the part he's played in a new project from Jane's Addiction frontman Perry Farrell, Satellite Party.

"When someone phoned me up and told me that I was on Perry Farrell's record, I thought bloody hell my drinking must be bad, I don't remember meeting Perry Farrell, and I don't remember the session. It is definitely me, and I did get to the bottom of it eventually.

“When I did a session with Hybrid [Welsh techno wizards] which was about two years ago I did a couple of tracks at the end, jammed on a couple of track that they said they were going to use for their next songs.

“After that they lost their record company, decamped to America, and somehow bumped into Perry Farrell surfing in Santa Monica - as you do when you're Welsh techno wizards. Perry Farrell was in the doldrums and they teamed up and started working together in the studio. Perry heard the outtakes and felt immediately inspired and knocked off two tracks that I don't; even know existed”

However, during the phone call, conversation turned to the future of New Order, and Hook let split news of New Order's split. Saying,

"I spoke to Perry, and he'd heard about New Order splitting up and he asked me to play bass. Well yeah, me and Bernard [sumner - New Order singer] aren't working together.”

When asked if the spilt was permanent (the band have had breaks in the past) Hooky explained,

“Bernard went off for a break with Electronic [his side-project band with Johnny Marr] but that was different. But it’s like the boy who cried wolf this time”

Well, it's hardly surprising to be honest, as much as I loved them and as much respect as I have for them, they'd been treading water musically for the past decade or so let's face it... Best to just give up when your greatest is behind you if you ask me....

They will be missed, but I am glad they're gone and at least they wont turn into the Indie equivalent of Status Quo or summat......

What's wrong with their past decade? The lack of innovation maybe?

PS "Crystal" was an awesome song IMO! B)

"Crystal" was okay as it went, but come on, compare to stuff like "Blue Monday", "True Faith", "Temptation" or "Bizarre Love Triangle" and it's pretty bloody average.... They set incredibly high standards, but throughout most of the 90s and then the 00s they didn't really push things as they had done... The stuff they did would be a good standard for a lesser band, but for NO who set the bench so high, it seemed a bit bland....

Dunno, I thought 'Waiting for the Siren's Call' was their strongest since 'Technique'. I thought 'Get Ready' was pretty awful.

They were doing the nostalgia circuit a bit much tho really...lovely to hear Joy Division songs played out by the guys who wrote them, but a bit cheesy to have Barney singing 'Love, Love Will Tear Us Apart...Again...Come On! Clap Your Hands!'

a bit cheesy to have Barney singing 'Love, Love Will Tear Us Apart...Again...Come On! Clap Your Hands!'

Oh dear...... Not exactly a "clap your hands" kind of song is it...? Proves my point though really, twenty years ago, they'd've never descended into such utter 'stadium rock'-style cliched naffness..... I suppose they encouraged everyone to raise their lighters aloft as well yeah.....

Heh...actually that gig was well let down by its audience. Something like this...

Barney : "Ok, we can do one more Joy Division song but it'd have to be a slow one or we can do a fast New Order song.

Barney : "Slow one?"

Audience : mumble

Barney : "Fast one?"

Audience : yaaaaaaaaaayyy!

I found out from the tracklisting the night before that we would have had 'Atmosphere'...instead I think we got 'Crystal'.

Well, Barney made the mistake of actually giving the audience a choice.... Practically all gigs I go to, the band sticks to the set-lists (mind you this is mainly for practical reasons like curfews and time constraints...), they tend not to be like DJs..... I reckon the result would've been different, though, had he asked "Do you want Atmosphere or Crystal...."

Totally - and it's cos it was at the Oxegen festival and they arrived onstage a little late.

well, I loved New Order... but they should've split after Republic without a doubt.

Siren's Call and Get Ready were absolutely dreadful albums. The days of Technique and Brotherhood were looooong gone.

Plus you have to admire a band who've made it despite having a lead singer who is totally unable to sing in tune - ever.

however dude now you say it think i would like to hear what they could do covering this  in the style of Crystal (think it would be better than Marron 5 covering Akon in the style of Sting and ending up like a bad impression of a replacement for Colin Hay off Scrubs!!!)

Actually I think I would have gone for Crystal live, however in video terms quite a hard choice between Anton Corbijn or 'Mr Stakkybomanofswedenfame' B)

anyway here is in vivo and eardrum buzz by wire rather than Crystal and Atmosphere for the billionth time

oh no they havent

Hooky News from Teletext below!!! it seems that the other two (which obv features one of the Other Two ) are to carry on as New Order.

No split for New Order

New Order are to carry on as a duo without bassist Peter Hook, they said.

Hook announced in a radio interview that the band had split - to the surprise of fellow band members Bernard Sumner and Stephen Morris.

Exclusive: last NO/Hook

New Order's final album with Peter Hook will be released on October 4, PS can reveal.

The soundtrack to Joy Division biopic Control will feature Hook's final contributions with Bernard Sumner and Stephen Morris on new instrumental songs alongside old Joy Division work.

Their PR said: "Hooky was in the studio making songs before he left, so to that extent he will feature on the album."

New Order angry at Hook

Bernard Sumner and Stephen Morris are carrying on as New Order after firing Peter Hook from the band.

Their statement said: "We would have hoped that Hooky could have approached us personally first, before speaking to the press.

"Whatever happens, musically or otherwise, New Order haven't split up." Hook had angered the pair by announcing the "split" on his MySpace in May

In a joint statement Sumner and Morris said: "He does not speak for all the band, therefore we can only assume he no longer wants to be a part of New Order. Whatever happens musically or otherwise New Order have not split up.
