Anyone remember Republica, a great British techno-rock-punk band? They were great in mid-90s but they dissapeared after just two albums (and after their label Deconstruction Records. Since 1998 they are in a looooong hiatus

I have both albums Republica and Speed Ballads and both rocks from A to Z!

In my opinion Republica is one of the few bands really close to Garbage in terms of music style...

Also Saffron (the lead singer, real name: Samantha Sprackling, born in Nigeria) is one of the best rock frontwomen (no doubt)

Biography

As Brit-pop remained popular in England during the mid-'90s, Republica hit the charts with a sound closer in feel to '80s indie-dance groups such as the Pet Shop Boys and New Order. Vocalist Saffron was born in Nigeria, and began singing with club-staples N-Joi and the Shamen, as well as Jah Wobble. By 1995, she had met keyboard players Tim Dorney (previously with Flowered Up) and Andy Todd (who has produced Barbra Streisand and Bjork, among others). They began writing songs, and after recruiting guitarist Johnny Male and drummer Dave Barborossa, Republica debuted with the single "Out of the Darkness." U.K. indie-dance label Deconstruction signed the group and released its self-titled debut. From the album, "Ready to Go" became a hit both in England and in the States, where it stormed the alternative Top Ten during late 1996. The follow-up, 1998's Speed Ballads, only gained British distribution.

Actually think Republica are closer to this lot tbh than garbage (this opinion probs because when Rouge Traders released this  it actually said 'Sounds like Republica' in the review   !!! still i suppose its better than bodyrockers or TV Rock  )

Rogue Traders are an Australian electro pop band consisting of James Ash (keyboards), Timothy Henwood (guitars), Cameron McGlinchey (drums) and Natalie Bassingthwaighte (lead vocals). The group's original members (James Ash and Steve Davis) met in London in 1989. Before forming Rogue Traders, Ash and Davis worked together on many projects, most notably as dance act Union State. Davis still contributes to the band and is still an active part of the songwriting process

so a great British techno-rock-punk band?? guessing that they will that be more like Hilary Clinton's faves Jesus Jones than The Prodigy but with a female vocalist???

Found them incredibly average myself... First album had a few okay tunes, second was just boring... Garbage, Curve and Jesus Jones did this sort of thing loads better.... Rogue Traders do have a certain "Rupublica-ness" about them though, it has to be said...
Yeah, or that Puretone song totally reminded me of Republica too. Saffron's best work, of course, was with N-Joi and in that Chesney Hawkes video.
I remember having a bit of a crush on Saffron. As far as their songs go - Drop Dead Gorgeous and Ready to Go were good but I can't think much else.

Saffron sure was fit, no denying that one....

There was another single of theirs I vaguely remember - "From Rush Hour With Love" (rather leaden play on words there...), but the tune didn't really stick with me tbh, rather forgettable...

'Ready To Go' is a true classic.

I'm not keen on them on the whole though, especially as I once heard their second album in full and barely any of the tracks on it stood out for me. :(
