May 15, 200718 yr lol - Thanks for the welcome To be fair my teacher is a raving socialist so if anything I would expect my knowledge to be biassed the other way :P The reason I am completely in support of the decision to go to war over the Falklands however is that I dont believe you should say that just because it does not have a massive population and it is a long way away that you should not care about it. The Falklands ARE part of the United Kingdom and so should be protected from any invasion no matter where it is. If the people living there wanted to be part of Argentina I would feel differently but they most certainly didnt and so they have rights as British citizens to be protected. the point is though that WE populated it and claimed it as 'ours'... now that might be ok, it might not. but geographically it aint ours! thatcher went to war too quickly, there were plenty of diplomatic routs that she could have taken as they werent worth 1 british life.... i think history shows that it wasnt worth it. at the time, thatcher was hugely unpopular and was well on course to lose the election in '83. the falklands were a godsend... she used it as an excuse to regain popularity, rally the brits behind the flag. unfortunately it worked.

We populated it and took the island 300 years ago Rob On that basis should Italy be allowed to reclaim Britain as the Romans were the original occupiers of the UK ? Do we have a right to send troops to Washington to reclaim America when we were the ones that discovered it ? Edited May 15, 200718 yr by Vic Vega

Do we have a right to send troops to Washington to reclaim America when we were the ones that discovered it ? lol... the romans were NOT the original occupiers of the uk.. thatd be the celts! by your logic YES we do have the rights to america, as we populated it in exactly the same way we colonised the malvinas! doh!!!!! lol.
May 15, 200718 yr Author lol... the romans were NOT the original occupiers of the uk.. thatd be the celts! doh!!!!! lol. thanks Rob.... The Romans :o :D The Celts.. ie the Welsh... were speaking a language when you Tory-voting lot of dregs were grunting, remember. The Romans... LMAO.
May 15, 200718 yr Maggie put this country back on its feet and gave us great standing in the world again Russ You are 2 years younger than me mate so if I remember the power cuts, green goddesses, 3 day week, hyper inflation, rubbish piling up in the streets, dead unburied and so on so will you, All of which happened during the Ted Heath Govt as well mate, something you Pro-Tory lot seem to like to gloss over...... <_<
May 15, 200718 yr The Falklands ARE part of the United Kingdom and so should be protected from any invasion no matter where it is. If the people living there wanted to be part of Argentina I would feel differently but they most certainly didnt and so they have rights as British citizens to be protected. Bollocks! If they want to be "British" so bloody much, then they should damn well come home and live here, take part in the system properly instead of sitting out in splendid isolation on some fukkin' rock off the Argentine coast tending their bloody sheep and being a bunch of fukkin' drop-outs.... We went to war for a damn bunch of SHEEPHERDERS!!!!! The Falklands has NO strategic importance and NO natural mineral wealth... I regard these people in much the same way I regard ex-pats living in the Algarve who bang on about how "British" they are.... The Argentinians at no point prevented any of the Islanders from returning back to Britain and were never under any kind of threat of being harmed in any way, they were never hostages in that sense; the Argentine soldiers (most of whom were young conscripts and had no real desire to fight a sodding war anyway.....) actually treated the Islanders with a great deal of respect... We should've just gotten out people out there and left it at that... As for your defence of Thatcher.... No offence mate, but you weren't even BORN when she was in office so you frankly have no idea what living under her rule was like, none at all.... She destroyed this country, she was POISON.... Tony Blair is just a w/anker, but Thatcher..?? She was evil incarnate..... I too will be celebrating the day she dies, big party round my place.....
May 16, 200718 yr Author I too will be celebrating the day she dies, big party round my place..... Make sure I'm invited! I'll pop round with a crate of Babycham, White Lightning and a family pack of sausage rolls. Might even stretch to some party poppers. Talking of her whose name shalt not be uttered after dark...wasn't it WONDERFUL seeing her looking so frail and close to the end at that Falklands nonsense this past weekend? I've a rather smug feeling this party won't be too long away, Scott!

May 16, 200718 yr All of which happened during the Ted Heath Govt as well mate, something you Pro-Tory lot seem to like to gloss over...... <_< Exactly Scott, it shows that the unions had the country over a barrel and the same thing would have happened under Maggie if she did not have the guts to stand up to them, the unions exerted too much influence in this country so Maggie had to change that, by unions I mean union leaders as they wanted to have their own political agenda instead of what they are there for in the first place which is creating decent working conditions for their members. The unions thought "aah this little old lady with a handbag will be a pushover" like Callaghan and Heath were how wrong they were ^_^
