Ferguson backs Milan to beat Reds

BBC Sports News

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes Liverpool have no chance of beating AC Milan in the Champions League final on 23 May.

Milan beat United in the semi-finals to set up a repeat of the 2005 final, which Liverpool won on penalties.

Ferguson told the Sun: "I'd bet for sure that Milan will win the Champions League. I'm absolutely certain of it.

"I told their manager Carlo Ancelotti at the end of our semi-final that there is no way he cannot win it now."

Ferguson plans to toast Milan's victory with a bottle of wine given to him by Ancelotti after his side had lost in Italy.

I'm still trying to analyse the factors involved but the truth remains we faced one of the best performances in the history of AC Milan

"Carlo gave me a magnificent bottle of wine," Ferguson added. "But I immediately told him I would only drink his wine once I see him lifting the Champions Cup."

The United boss admits his team were outclassed in the second leg of their semi-final, which Milan won 3-0.

But Ferguson believes his side were tired from their efforts in the Premiership the previous weekend, which helped United regain the title for the first time since 2003.

"Milan's second-leg victory over us was stupendous, fantastic and extraordinary," Ferguson said.

"But I know we paid a high price for the Premiership fightback which we needed at Everton to turn a 2-0 scoreline into a 4-2 victory.

"Last week, Milan were fresher and better prepared tactically and physically.

"I'm still trying to analyse the factors involved. But the truth remains we faced one of the best performances in the history of AC Milan."

"Where as Liverpool were very fortunate to defeat Chelsea over two legs, as Chelsea were the much the better side".

Do you agree with Alex Ferguson & will you like Fergie be supporting the non-English side in Athens?

Alex Ferguson = SCUM through & through.

To think I wanted the Mancs to defeat Chelski for the League title and I supported them to fluke the European Cup against Bayern Munich in 1999. As I supported Arsenal to win (in vain) last year.

I just cannot understand why someone would not want a team from the same nation to win the European Cup, as it is great news for the country as a whole.

I am very, very annoyed with his comments today. But looking on the bright side, I think he along with Gattuso have done the team talk in the dressing room at Athens for Liverpool in a fortnights time.

As for the wine, lets hope he has a long time to wait to open the bottle, as he clearly likes Sour Grapes!

Liverpool were easily better than Chelsea over the two legs, so Fergie's wrong in that statement.

I think he's just trying to add more tension towards the final to be honest. I think these comments will really spur on the Liverpool players and fans to be more determined to prove Fergie wrong.

AC Milan were good against Man Utd, but they were only that good, because they capitalised on Man Utd's mistakes.

To tell you the truth, if it was Chelsea/Man Utd against Milan in the final, ok i know Man Utd vs Milan final was impossible, but if it was any of them, i'd have wanted Milan to win. But i respect Liverpool and have never had a problem with the club so i want Liverpool to win ^_^

I cheered on Barcelona in last years CL final and was delighted to see them win the reason being that Arsenal are our deadly local rivals

With Man City being such a joke United's deadly local rivals are Liverpool and there is a passionate rivalry between the 2 clubs and supporters the same way as Spurs / Arsenal so Fergie wanting Liverpool to lose is the same reason I wanted Arsenal to lose

I want Liverpool to win though

Liverpool were easily better than Chelsea over the two legs, so Fergie's wrong in that statement.

That's how I see it also.

Man united where tired and on another day could take on Milan, but I think Liverpool rightly deserved to be in the final and wouldn't surprise me if they hand on to win again on penalties.

To be fair if Milan play how they did and Liverpool play like they did they probably WILL win. He's not exactly wrong but I will be supporting Liverpool.

Oh there's absolutely NO DOUBT in my mind that AC will hammer them.

Granted I still want Gerrard to break both of Gattuso's legs but that's the outcome I see happening ...

This thread is highly amusing. Me supporting Liverpool, would never happen. I'd support Saddam Hussein's Army-Run Iraqi National Team over the Scousers. For one simple reason, i hate them.

FORCA MILAN!

To think on Liverpool's official website 63.2% of those who voted out of a sample of over 183,000 prefer Man Utd to Chelsea.

You are clearly jealous that you are no longer the most hated country in England.

Also having since seen the TV interview of Fergie's comments, his tongue was clearly in his cheeks as he was grinning and laughing when he made these comments. So he was clearly having a dig at old Maureen with regards to his comments about the Euro Cup Semi-Final with Chelsea as he was taking the p1$$ with some sarcastic comments agreeing with the Chelski manager. He was just playing up to the old Manc stereotype. While again it clearly shows how something in print can be taken out of context.

Mind you I can understand why you want a side who should not have been allowed to compete in the European Champions League to win due to the Italian bribing scandal last season.

Because after all nobody remembers Manchester City winning the 1968 League Championship do they?

I doubt that 183,000 would want United to have won the European Cup lol

Having said that, we've won the league 9 times since Liverpool last won it

European Champions?

^ It was a poll if you had to support one or the other (Man Utd or Chelsea), hence the majority of voters preferred Man Utd to Chelsea as their is a mutual hatred/admiration amongst between Liverpool & Manchester Utd supporters.

Whilst we hate Chelsea because of their arrogant manager, their cheating diving players, and the fact they can make a £493 million loss in four years, buying trophies and killing the sport I love whilst still playing dull unattractive football.

I know 8 Liverpool supporters and I know between us it would be 5-3 to supporting Man Utd if we had to. So the result sounds about right to me.

However, you are right about the League titles as the gap is down to 2 titles now. It is getting much too close for my liking.
