Posted May 12, 200718 yr My Review of the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest Finalists Firstly, I should add that I'm not a big fan of Eurovision. I can honestly say that I've never watched an ESC all the way through. At most I'm aware of where the UK are in the running order and watch their performance and then maybe catch the results where all the nations are giving away their points. I should be going out tonight (from 09:30 PM) so I will miss most of the final. So I thought from a music fan's perspective I've taken some time to listen to all the 24 Finalists in running order and wrote a brief review of all the tracks and scored them out of 10. So it will be interesting to compare my opinion with those of you who are clearly more enthusiastic about Eurovision & the eventual Final result.
May 12, 200718 yr Author 1. Bosnia & Herzegovinia - Unremarkable 1970s style ballad sung by a singer who sounds like a cross between Celine Dion & Olivia Newton John (4.5) 2. Spain - Four Ricky Martin boyband wannabes who are about as convincing as Westlife covering an Iron Maiden track. Very Poor (2.5) 3. Belarus - Musically very James Bond, good looking singer, gothic imagery, memorable chorus. Potential winner (9) 4. Ireland - Very authentic Irish entry. Unfortunately the song is very unmemorable (4) 5. Finland - Female singer - a cross between Amy Lee (Evanescence) & Andrea Corr. A very solid lite-Rock song. (7) 6. Macedonia - A Cheryl Tweedy lookalike with a far better voice. I suspect this will do well, but the song does not take off for me. (6)
May 12, 200718 yr Author 7. Slovenia - Another female singer. But another unremarkable song saved by some rather good vocal operatics. (5.5) 8. Hungary - Oh I like this. Bizarrely sounds like Katie Melua doing a Janis Joplin impersonation over a song that strangely reminds me of Shakira's Underneath Your Clothes. I don't think it will do too well on the night though I hope I'm wrong (8) 9. Lithuania - Yet another female singer. Flamenco styled guitar track. Pleasant. (5) 10. Greece - Very cliched modern Greek/Turkish type of song with a catchy chorus. But has an advantage of standing out after being performed by a young male singerafter a load of reasonable songs sung by females. (6.5) 11. Georgia - Very Eastern European sounding song performed by female singer. But the song itself is unremarkable. (5.5) 12. Sweden - A modern glam rock band. Musically it reminds of Edison Lighthouse's Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes meets Bay City Rollers - Shang-A-Lang. Very dated. (4.5)
May 12, 200718 yr Author 13. France - This looks and sounds like a French p1$$take of what a Eurovision Song entry should sound like. Terrible (1) 14. Latvia - A Latvian answer to G4 with Top Hats - full of "Popera" and a decent tune. (7.5) 15. Russia - Three Avril Lavigne wannabes sing over a tune that the Sugababes & Girls Aloud would kill for. (9.5) 16. Germany - Big Band style song. If this does well then the UK needs to press gang Will Young to represent us next year. However, I reckon this could bomb. (5) 17. Serbia - Another female singer - A Yugoslavian Alison Moyet. Fantastic ballad type of tune and I love the presentation of the performance. (10) 18. Ukraine - From the sublime to the ridiculous, performed by the secret love child of Su (Hi De Hi, Gimme, Gimme, Gimme) Pollard & Timmy (Wackaday) Mallett. Bonkers lyrics, memorable & fun tune in an DJ Otzi kind of way. This will get the so bad it is brilliant vote all across Europe (8)
May 12, 200718 yr Author 19. United Kingdom - Why, why, why did the UK public vote for the third rate Steps impersonators? We should have sent Cyndi. A totally dire track with lame double entredres ripping off Kylie's Your Disco Needs You except the tune is awful and musically it is dated Euro-Cheese. Better best forgotten. (2) 20. Romania - What on earth is this? This is terrible. Devoid of any musicality or tune. (0) 21. Bulgaria - Will strongly benefit from its draw near the end of the show and following on from two dreadful tracks. A strange dance dance track that does not really go anywhere. Otherwise will do better than it deserves. (6) 22. Turkey - A very modern (for Eurovision) sounding Euro dance track. Justin Timberlake has released worse records. (7) 23. Armenia - A nice musical arrangement, let down by a very bland boyband-type feel to the track. (4.5) 24. Moldova - An Evanescence style track that sounds like it could have come off of an Anastacia album. This will do well & being last in the draw will greatly help it. (7.5)
May 12, 200718 yr Author So my results would be: 1 Point Greece 2 Points Finland 3 Points Turkey 4 Points Moldova 5 Points Latvia 6 Points Hungary 7 Points Ukraine 8 Points Belarus 10 Points Russia 12 Points Serbia In short the Eastern European countries will do well tonight, not because they will be voting for their neighbours and there are so many former USSR, Yugoslavian states, but because they have the best songs. I predict the Big Four (UK, France, Germany & Spain) will all be in the bottom half of the table if not all in the Bottom quarter (19th-24th). Largely because they have entered very dated sounding, poor song choices. It is easy to see why the Ukraine are the favourites because of the novelty/gimmicky factor, however I hope they are beaten by either Serbia, Russia or Belarus because those three songs are really good IMHO. Please pass your comments on my opinions?
