That's not the point I was making and you know it. There are a great many crashes that have been caused by one driver dropping a tape / CD / mp3 player and bending down temporarily to pick it up. I'm merely pointing out where the law could go if this is passed.

Non-smokers are bound to support this, but would you support a ban on other car activities you take for granted or do you all sit stock still in your seat, your hands never wavering from the ten to two position?

In those instances you will be charged with reckless driving and driving without due care and attention (crashing while picking up a CD or whatever) so the same should apply to smokers then ;)

As for me I never use 10-2 I use twenty to one or twenty five to two as it suits my driving style more and in terms of changing songs or whatever I only ever change CD's at traffic lights or if I pull over somewhere and when I change individual songs I use the remote control for my CD player that is stuck onto the steering wheel so i can reach it with my thumb while keeping my hand on the wheel, in 23 years of driving I have crashed my cars twice, once when a tyre deflated and the other time when a deer ran out right infront of me on a country lane, I have a protected no claims bonus so no I have never had any probs changing CD's or doing any other in car activities

They can ban it if they so wish... won't make one iota of difference to me.

I paid for my car, I pay for its upkeep and pay to keep it on the road.... I do what I like in MY own car. A smoking ban in cars is hilarious.... nothing on earth would stop me smoking in my car. I smoke when stuck in traffic, and when I consider it safe to do so. I also never EVER throw cigarettes out of the window or smoke whilst on a busy road like a motorway.

If people are seriously worried about road safety and what people get up to in their cars that may have a minute chance of causing an accident... here's a few that are MUCH more likely to cause a crash.

1. Children in a car.... belted up or not - SERIOUSLY distracting and stressful.

2. CD players in cars - another distraction - whilst the anti-smokers here are against the 'dangers' of smoking behind the wheel - how many of them have fiddled about changing radio stations/CDs whilst diving? 'nuff said.

3. ALL windows shut at all times - one of the main factors in 'unexplained' crashes are insects, especially bees flying into open car windows.

4. Anti-smokers as passengers.... guaranteed to make you want to leave control of the wheel and punch them in the moaning mouth. Hard.

I also never EVER throw cigarettes out of the window or smoke whilst on a busy road like a motorway.

You are in an absolute minority Russ, you are probably in a minority of about 2% not a day goes by without on more than 1 occasion some thoughtless pig just flicking his fag out of the window, it is because of the dangerous majority of smokers that every smoker has to suffer

Simple answer to these morons is to take their license number and report them.

Most cars come with an ashtray use the damn thing, why chuck the fag out of the window, its a driving hazard, I don't smoke, but I'm a driver, I do have passengers that do smoke, but its my property I don't allow anyone to smoke in my car, as I can't stand the smell.

But why should they enforce the law its your own property, its common sense in the end, soon you won't be able to smoke anywhere apart from your own home. And I bet they will drum up some stupid law to ban smoking from your own home soon.

i don't banning smoking while driving will do anything at all.

they should ban car radios then if they're THAT concerned about decreasing road traffic accidents  a lot of crashes happen due to the driver flicking through the radio, not having both hands on the wheel.

Such petty regulations wouldn't be necessary if the majority of drivers kept two hands on the steering wheel, while they were actually in motion.
Hmm, listening to the arguements being put forward here, I'm actually changing my mind tbh.... Yes, it really is in essence not that far removed from changing a CD or flicking through the radio tbh.... Mobile phone use is different, it is a more sustained distraction than lighting up a fag or changing CDs, so I think a ban there is justitified.... But, no I reckon if fiddling with car stereos is okay, then smoking should be as well....

i dont agree with the argument 'its my private property i can do what i want'.... because the roads are PUBLIC property.

i agree with other arguments especially kids in cars...

tbh i have no strong feelings either way on fags in cars.... i dont believe that smoking is a major factor in accidents..

I dont think it is either tbh.... I would say that people clamping a sodding mobile phone to their ears was much more of a factor to accidents... At least summat was done about that though....

i'm a non smoker but this is ridiculous. how far they wanna go with this.
why dont they just cut all this cr@p and just ban smoking instead of taking all these steps and wasting time
...simple - the Government rake in ginormous amounts of cash from smoking every year - if the bottom falls out of the tobacco industry in the UK... we're in serious $h!t, basically.
