The Eurovision Song Contest drew nearly 9 million viewers to BBC1 on Saturday night, despite a dismal showing by the UK entry, Scooch.

BBC1's coverage of the 52nd annual competition - won by Serbia, with the Scooch in 22nd place - attracted 8.7 million viewers and a 40% share between 8pm and 11.15pm, according to unofficial overnights.

This was was up 500,000 viewers and three share points on last year's Eurovision on BBC1.

The audience peaked at 10.9 million viewers - up 300,000 on last year - as balladeer Marija Serifovic was crowned the winner at 10.30pm.

Audience share peaked at 10.45pm at 53%.

Eurovision dragged down the audience for ITV1 shows Who Wants to be a Millionaire? and Parkinson.

Who Wants to be a Millionaire? was watched by 3.1 million viewers and attracted a 13% share at 9.25pm, down 200,000 and two share points on last week.

Parkinson, scheduled alongside Eurovision's climax, lost 500,000 viewers week on week to record an audience of 2.1 million, a 12% share.

This is believed to be the lowest Parkinson ratings since the veteran chatshow host's switch from BBC1 to ITV1.

But the success of Eurovision did not hamper ITV talent show Grease is the Word, which gained 400,000 viewers and a share point from last week, probably because it was not up against BBC1's talent show Any Dream Will Do.

Grease still lost out heavily to Eurovision, with an audience of 4.3 million and a 20% share between 7.45pm and 9.25pm.

Oh God  You've been advertising, haven't you? :(

I can't talk, I've gotten my year addicted to Danzing Lasha Tumbai :kink:

do you reckon that is 9 million tvs which tuned in to watch it, coz if you think most tvs will have a few people watching them then the actual number of people watching the Eurovision would've been massive

The ratings guys only take a sample of around 500,000 people and what they watch, so it's all timesed by 120 or something to get the figures. I think they probably take into account exactly how many people are watching TV in these 500,000 homes though.

Good figures for Ireland too. :D

Despite Ireland's first ever last place at a Eurovision Song Contest final last Saturday, plenty of Irish television viewers were at hand to commiserate and curse from the armchair, as viewing figures remained strong with a slight increase on 2006.

Saturday's final in Helsinki was watched by over 780,000 Irish viewers, which is marginally higher than last year's figures. This corresponds to an impressive 53% of the viewership in Ireland, which means that over half of the available audience had tuned in to support Dervish. The total compares very favourably with several other Western European countries' figures, notably France, Denmark and Norway.

Vote hijacking?

However, reactions are unsettled with talk of a "hijacking" of the Irish televote by the country's immigrant population doing the rounds in the Irish press currently. Lithuania received a whopping douze points from Ireland, picking up little from elsewhere. William Kenny, of bookmaker William Hill, summed up the current mood by suggesting "these days, you have to be either mad as a hatter or Eastern European".

As Ireland faces the semifinal in 2008, it remains to be seen whether the Eurovision magic holds fast for the Irish.

Falls in Norway and Denmark though...

Many consider the Scandinavian countries being among the most Eurovision Song Contest – friendly countries which are matched with high viewing figures as well. The published viewing figures for 2007 however show a dramatic fall in two of these countries.Neither Norway nor Denmark managed to qualify for the final and in both countries this translated into lower viewing figures for the Eurovision Song Contest final on Saturday night.

In Norway 573,000 watched the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest final a lower number of people than for the semi-final where 706,000 watched as Guri Schanke missed out on a place in the top ten. In comparison 1,373,000 watched last year's final with Norway taking part.

In Denmark the drop was even worse. Last year 1,709,000 watched the final, this year only 487,000 did. The semi-final this year with DQ as one of the participants was watched by 685,000.

The dramatic falls in Norway and Denmark are a worrying sign, mirrored in other countries that failed to reach the final once again this year, including Israel and the Netherlands. Despite improved viewing figures in Finland and the United Kingdom, and increasing figures in Russia and Serbia, losing 58% of the viewers in Norway and 71% in Denmark is a dramatic fall!
