Chartifacts

Avril Lavigne keeps her "Girlfriend" at the top of the singles chart in Australia for a fourth week, but also creates a piece of history with the albums chart. Avril is from Napanee in Ontario, Canada, and the new No.1 album this week is by Vancouver, Canada native Michael Buble, thus creating a first for the Australian charts, in that two different Canadian's are at the top of our charts. Previously Bryan Adams (from November 1993 for 8 weeks) and Celine Dion (August 1996 for 1 week) had occupied both the top of the singles and album charts with their releases, but this week is the first time that two different Canadians have occupied the top spots.

Last week's highest new entry by Pink "Leave Me Alone (I'm Lonely)" becomes the biggest climbing single this week moving from 11 to 5, and thus becomes her fourth Top 5 single from this weeks No.3 album "I'm Not Dead". She has also just announced three more shows for her current national tour, one more each for Adelaide, Sydney and Brisbane. So expect this single and the album to be around a lot longer.

The highest of five new entries this week comes in at No.7, and is this week's No.1 single in the U.S., "Makes Me Wonder" by Maroon 5. It's first track off their forthcoming album "It Won't be Soon Before Long" which is out in Australia on May 21st, and is their first track since "Sunday Morning" hit No.27 in January 2005. They have previously had a total of four Top 50 singles, including the two Top 10 singles ""This Love" (No.8, March 2004) and the No.1 single for five weeks "She Will Be Loved" (August 2004).

Dean Geyer (pronounced Guy-er, as opposed to Renee Geyer who was pronounced Gay-er) came fourth in the 2006 Australian Idol competition, and this week his debut single "If You Don't Mean it" enters the charts at No.11. It's from his forthcoming album "Rush" which is out at the end of the month.

Another act who haven't been on the charts since January 2005 are Linkin Park, who debuts this week with their new track "What I've Done" at No.13. It's from their new album "Minutes to Midnight" which is out on Monday, and becomes their 10th Top 50 single since they first graced our charts back in 2001 with the Top 5 single "One Step Closer". That last track back in January 2005 was the No.3 double A-Side single "Numb"/"Encore", and if their album debuts at No.1 next week it will be their first in Australia.

Former lead singer of B2K Omarion has his first Australian solo single debut at No.36 this week, "Ice Box", which is taken from his second album "21". He has hit the charts before as guest vocalist on Bow Wow's 2005 No.14 single "Let Me Hold You", but this is his first solo outing on our charts.

Not far behind at No.39 is the third Top 50 single for The Used, from Orem, Utah. "The Bird and the Worm" is the first track from their fifth album "Lies for the Liars" which is out next week, and they have previously graced the charts with the tracks "All That I've Got" (No.35, May 2005) and "I Caught Fire (in Your Eyes)" (No.43. October 2005).

Mother's Day week charts' are always an upheaval from the previous and following weeks, and this year's is no exception, with 13 bullets/debuts/re-entries come from Mother's Day promoted/targeted releases. For other Mother's Day No.1's, check out this weeks album No.1 listings.

Debuting at No.1 is the new album by Canadian crooner Michael Buble. As I mentioned above both himself and Avril make it a Canadian double at the top of the charts, and this new album "Call Me Irresponsible" becomes his second chart topping album, the first being his self-titled debut from 2003, which hit the top of the charts May 2004 (Mothers Day week). It's his fifth charting album in total, and his third album "It's Time" also comes back into the Top 50 this week at No.17, whilst the lead single off the "Call Me Irresponsible" album, "Everything", climbs two places to No.26 on the singles chart this week.

Michael now equals the only other Canadian Male to top the album charts twice, Bryan Adams, and he becomes the first solo male artist since December 2006 to top the charts, back then it was Damian Leith's "The Winner's Journey". It's the 155th Solo Male Performed album, and the 15th Canadian Performed album. All of the Canadians who have topped the album charts have now had two or more No.1's, being Bryan Adams (2), Alanis Morissette (2), Avril Lavigne (2), Shania Twain (2) and Celine Dion (5).

"Call Me Irresponsible" is the 548th No.1 album in Australia, and is the second album with the word 'Call' in it's title, the other being "Curtain Call" by Eminem ( ) and is the third album with 'M' in it's title, the other two being "Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player", Elton John (April 1973) and "Come Away With Me", Norah Jones (February 2003). There have been no 'Irresponsible' No.1's (sic!). And one last thing, the last four albums by Canadian acts have gone Avril Lavigne, Michael Buble, Avril Lavigne and now Michael Buble.

Josh Groban has been in Australia the past two weeks doing promotions for his new album "Awake", and this week it climbs from 12 to 5, plus thanks to Mother's Day and the promotional tour, he has two other albums within the Top 50 this week, "Closer" (No.28) and "Josh Groban" (No.45).

Also doing a National tour, and also a tie-in with Mother's Day is Human Nature on their "Motown Tour", which sees their second Motown albums FLY back up the charts, "Dancing in the Street: The Songs of Motown II" from No.42 to No.9, as this week last year their first Motown album re-peaked at No.1.

Other Mother's Day influenced titles that charge up the charts this week are "The Magic of Doris Day" (No.22), "Undiscovered" by James Morrison (No.26, he's also in the country this past week), "Forever Begins to Tonight", Patrizio Buanne (No.27), and "The Very Best of Dolly Parton" (No.38).

Groove Armada debut at No.30 this week with "Soundboy Rock", their first album since their October 2004 No.26 "The Best of", and this album features their current single "Get Down" which is at No.33 this week.

Australia have the right idea...these mediocre comebacks are going mid to low top 10 over there yet topping our chart for the sake of them being a comeback
