Posted May 14, 200718 yr From The Times May 13, 2007 I am what I am Ana Matronic, 32, is the female lead singer of Scissor Sisters. She lives in New York City with her boyfriend and three cats - I had two fathers in my life. It sounds so dismissive to say “stepfather”. That has the connotation of not playing a role in my life, and he absolutely did. - Life’s challenge is to be able to look in the mirror and feel good about yourself. My second dad would say nobody can take away your honour but you. - I naturally gravitated towards the gay world. I love its sense of survival – that triumph over adversity. And there’s a lot of honouring – of each other and of life, even the ridiculous aspects. - Nowadays, if you were born a person you don’t like, you can change your nationality, your gender, your religion. You can choose who you’re going to be. - My appreciation of the grotesque comes from spending a lot of time in hospital, visiting my grandfather on his deathbed. All aspects of being should be embraced, including things that aren’t pretty. - Conspicuous consumption bothers me. It’s like it exists to validate one’s existence. It’s fine to want nice things, but the culture behind a £5,000 Hermès bag is not part of the solution. - It’s important to have a physical connection with yourself. I could have liposuction, but losing weight on my own, in a healthy way, is much more gratifying and more of a long-term achievable goal. - Love is the reason we’re here. Having someone who knows you even better than yourself, who you feel truly comfortable with, makes everything better.
