Posted May 14, 200718 yr A Dutch politican has put forward an idea for a brand new, Eurovision-style song contest for member countries of the European Union. Toine Manders, a member of the European parliament for the Netherlands, has suggested a new show comprising only the member states of the European Union. The aim of the EU contest would be to increase the sense of belonging for each country, but would promote individuality through an official language rule, as the Eurovision Song Contest did for many of its years. Former participant for the Netherlands, Sandra Reemer (1972, 1976 and 1979) has already expressed her support for the plan, as has prominent journalist Henk Krol. The new format would address several issues raised in recent editions of the Eurovision Song Contest, such as neighbourly voting. Safeguards would be put in place under Manders' suggestions, including a split between televotes and a jury vote to determine the winner. Several media companies are said to have already shown interest in the scheme, and in the meantime, Manders continues to lobby the European Parliament for funding for the project. ESC Today.
May 14, 200718 yr Author Why bother? I mean, just about all the countries who we accuse of neighbourly voting are in the EU already. And so the same thing will happen votes-wise. And tbh, I can't imagine Slovenia, Lithuania and the rest being too interested in entering and having to fork out money to.
May 14, 200718 yr Author I mean in the EU we have: Belgium, Italy, France, Luxembourg, Germany, Netherlands, Denmark, United Kingdom, Ireland, Greece, Portugal, Spain, Austria, Sweden, Finland, Cyprus, Lithuania, Czech Republic, Malta, Estonia, Poland (and don't we know it!), Slovakia, Latvia and Slovenia. With Bulgaria and Romania on the way in 2007, and Croatia and FYR Macedonia coming in 2010 I think, and Turkey in 2014 (?). So I see not a great deal of difference to the Eurovision tbh.
May 14, 200718 yr Also I cant see a new show competing with the Eurovision's already huge and well-established fan base - I think it's just them complaining about the fact they didnt get through the final Edited May 14, 200718 yr by brunoboi
May 14, 200718 yr Author Estonia are agreeing now too: With over 2100 people voting, it makes a good indicator of the current situation and thoughts about the Eurovision Song Contest in Estonia. 66,1% of the voters said they would prefer the Eurovision Song Contest to be held between the EU memberstates, 26,5% stated the national juries should be brought back and 3,6% preferred regional contests. Only 3,8% of the polled readers were satisfied with the current situation. ESC Today.
May 14, 200718 yr Smacks of a sort of "Cultural Apartheid" to me... So we say to Switzerland just because they happen to be a politically neutral country, and therefore not part of the EU, that they can never, ever take part in Eurovision, or whatever the hell it's gonna be called, even though they are geographically speaking in the very heart of Continental Europe... Ridiculous.... This really is a case of the "Western" nations just showing sour grapes because the EE and Balkan States appear to be dominating... So what, things change, get used to....
May 14, 200718 yr Poland (and don't we know it!), And just what do you mean by this matey.... My partner is Polish, so you'd better explain yourself.... <_<
May 15, 200718 yr There's no point in this whatsoever, most of the countries we accuse of 'bloc voting' are in the EU anyway, why not just revert to the own language rule...?
May 15, 200718 yr I don't understand, what difference would making everyone sing in their own language make?
May 15, 200718 yr I don't understand, what difference would making everyone sing in their own language make? Inreasing national pride etc., making Malta, Ireland and the UK do well again :kink:
May 15, 200718 yr Author And just what do you mean by this matey.... My partner is Polish, so you'd better explain yourself.... <_< Just that there are thousands of them over here since they joined, which there are. I have many Polish mates anyway, so it wasn't an insult.
